{"id":11414,"date":"2020-04-25T14:55:38","date_gmt":"2020-04-25T18:55:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/?p=11414"},"modified":"2020-06-15T01:33:48","modified_gmt":"2020-06-15T05:33:48","slug":"covid-19-deaths-outbreaks-underreported-in-ontario-ohc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/covid-19-deaths-outbreaks-underreported-in-ontario-ohc\/","title":{"rendered":"COVID-19 deaths, outbreaks underreported in Ontario: OHC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(April 24, 2020)<\/p>\n<p>By:\u00a0Antonella Artuso,\u00a0Toronto Sun<\/p>\n<p>Long-term care residents account for 72% of 713 officially reported COVID-19 deaths in Ontario.<\/p>\n<p>However, the total death toll is likely higher than reported due to a delay in reporting.<\/p>\n<p>A new report from the Ontario Health Coalition (OHC) says that almost 3,800 residents and staff of healthcare facilities have contracted COVID-19 and 80 long-term care homes have experienced major outbreaks with at least 10 cases.<\/p>\n<p>Ontario public health reported 135 outbreaks in long-term care facilities and 37 in hospitals.<\/p>\n<p>OHC executive director Natalie Mehra said the figures that have been emerging out of Ontario public health officials trail reality and ignore outbreaks in some healthcare settings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople need to know,\u201d Mehra said.<\/p>\n<p>There have been 516 deaths of long-term care residents and five deaths of staff, according to provincial figures.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the situation \u201cunacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Premier Doug Ford, whose own mother-in-law has tested positive in a long-term care home, said the system is broken and needs to be fixed.<\/p>\n<p>Mehra said the OHC has tracked 283 outbreaks in long-term care or similar settings, including 69 in retirement homes, and in hospitals in Ontario.<\/p>\n<p>The Centre for Addictions and Mental Health (CAMH) reported Thursday its first death of a patient due to the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart of it is that they\u2019re only reporting hospitals and long-term care homes, but even in those we found more outbreaks than they\u2019re reporting,\u201d Mehra said. \u201cIt\u2019s not clear to us why that is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Families trying to make a difficult decision about whether to remove a loved one from a nursing home, for instance, deserve full information about the extent of outbreaks, Mehra said.<\/p>\n<p>While there is a significant increase in the availability of personal protection equipment (PPE) in these facilities, Mehra said they are still hearing from some staff that it is difficult to get hold of N95 masks.<\/p>\n<p>Given the rapid spread of the virus, it\u2019s appears likely that a surgical mask alone will not prevent an infection, she said.<\/p>\n<p>The province has asked for military support at five priority nursing homes.<\/p>\n<p>Long-term Care Minister Merrilee Fullerton said these facilities are on the frontline of the battle against COVID-19 across the world.<\/p>\n<p>The minister said her government acted quickly at the outset of the pandemic, including being one of the first jurisdictions to ban all but essential visitors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd now we\u2019re not afraid to ask for help,\u201d she said. \u201cOur homes are struggling and we\u2019ve called in the military.\u201d <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"mailto:aartuso@postmedia.com\">aartuso@postmedia.com<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<strong>TRACKING COVID-19<\/strong> <strong>Ontario<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Confirmed cases: 12,879<\/p>\n<p>New cases: 634, up 5.2%<\/p>\n<p>Deaths: 713, up 5.5%<\/p>\n<p>Long-term care resident deaths: 516<\/p>\n<p>Long-term care staff deaths: 5<\/p>\n<p>Percentage of cases in people aged 80 or older: (2,816 cases)<\/p>\n<p>Number of cases in health care workers: 1,626 <strong>Canada<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Confirmed cases: 40,824<\/p>\n<p>Deaths: 2,028<\/p>\n<p>Percentage of cases in people aged 80 or older: 15.8% <em>(Source: Ontario and Canada public health)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/app.meltwater.com\/newsletters\/analytics\/view\/58b49213f97502b1c5ecb214\/distribution\/5ea2c701f6def01e32d783bd\/document\/DBlVol0Xh9rapOnfS27YbPOZwe4\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Click here for original article<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(April 24, 2020) By:\u00a0Antonella Artuso,\u00a0Toronto Sun Long-term care residents account for 72% of 713 officially reported COVID-19 deaths in Ontario.
