{"id":12639,"date":"2020-05-25T12:03:29","date_gmt":"2020-05-25T16:03:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/?p=12639"},"modified":"2020-06-27T16:48:01","modified_gmt":"2020-06-27T20:48:01","slug":"a-failed-venture-unifor-president-says-canada-needs-better-long-term-care-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/a-failed-venture-unifor-president-says-canada-needs-better-long-term-care-system\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018A failed venture\u2019: Unifor president says Canada needs better long-term care system"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>(May 24, 2020)<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>By:\u00a0Beatrice Britneff, Global News<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>After witnessing the devastating impact of the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.globalnews.ca\/tag\/novel-coronavirus\">novel coronavirus<\/a><\/span>\u00a0on many\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.globalnews.ca\/tag\/long-term-care\">long-term care<\/a><\/span>\u00a0homes and its staff, the president of Canada\u2019s largest private sector union says the country needs \u201ca better system than we have today.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cHopefully governments will wake up and will now say: \u2018Look this was a failed venture, we\u2019d better regulate the industry [and] we\u2019d better ensure that people have full time jobs and decent pay,&#8217;\u201d Unifor president Jerry Dias told\u00a0<em>The West Block<\/em>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In an interview with host Mercedes Stephenson, Dias said his union represents thousands of health-care workers, including\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalnews.ca\/tag\/personal-support-workers\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">personal support workers<\/span><\/a>\u00a0employed both in for-profit and not-for-profit long-term care facilities.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Many of these nursing homes only offer casual or part-time work to personal support workers, forcing them to take on two or three jobs \u201cto make ends meet,\u201d he said.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>This problem is exacerbated in for-profit environments, he claimed, because those companies want to avoid paying salaries and providing benefits.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cWe need a change,\u201d Dias said. \u201cPeople are overworked and underpaid.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cSo as long we have our seniors taken care of under a system for profit, there will be less workers for the purpose of maximizing profits. We need a better system than we have today.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In early May, the Ontario Health Coalition \u2014 an organization that advocates for protections and improvements to the public health care system \u2014\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/death-rates-in-long-term-care-by-ownership-release\/\">published an analysis<\/a><\/span>\u00a0it conducted of deaths linked to\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">COVID-19<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in for-profit, non-for-profit and municipally-owned homes in Ontario from April 28 to May 5.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The data gathered on 93 homes with outbreaks showed a higher COVID-19 death rate in homes owned by for-profit corporations compared to the other facilities \u2014 although those homes were only half the total number of facilities experiencing outbreaks at the time.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Long-term care facilities are currently regulated by the provinces and territories. But during the pandemic, the federal government has acknowledged there are shortcomings both in how seniors are cared for and the working conditions of the people taking care of them.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Earlier in May, Prime Minister\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.globalnews.ca\/tag\/justin-trudeau\">Justin Trudeau<\/a><\/span>\u00a0announced the federal government would help the provinces and territories cover the cost of a wage boost for essential workers, including those in the health-care sector.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cWe see across the country people working on the front lines in essential services, in our seniors care centres, in our long-term care, in our health-care systems and elsewhere who are making very low wages while doing extraordinarily important work,\u201d Trudeau said on May 7.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>But when asked if and how Ottawa might reform the system \u2014 if it would bring long-term care under the\u00a0<em>Canada Health Act\u00a0<\/em>and put an end to for-profit care \u2014 federal officials haven\u2019t gotten into specifics.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>On April 23, the federal health minister said she\u2019s considering the idea of a \u201clong-term national project\u201d to examine the issue across all levels of government.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cThere is a significant appetite of Canadians and of politicians to fix this situation once and for all \u2014 for seniors all across the country, and for their families who love them,\u201d\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.globalnews.ca\/tag\/patty-hajdu\">Patty Hajdu<\/a><\/span>\u00a0said.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Essential workers in health-care settings, grocery stores and transit systems \u2014 to name a few \u2014 have continued to do their jobs throughout the pandemic, but as many provinces begin to gradually reopen their economies, that means many other workers will be getting back to work.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Asked whether he\u2019s confident that most employers will provide safe working environments for their employees, Dias said he\u2019s \u201ca lot more comfortable\u201d with the state of unionized than nonunionized workplaces.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cIn the unionized workplaces we have very active health and safety committees,\u201d he said, citing the auto industry as an example.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cWe have our hands all over the return to work protocols.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>That said, Dias said some members continue to have concerns about safety, \u201cas they should be.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re concerned about whether or not they will contract COVID-19 at work and pass it on to their families,\u201d he said.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cThere is a significant amount of uncertainty \u2026 hopefully what that means is that people are going to be very conscious when they\u2019re at work and make sure that they follow the return to work protocols which are 100 per cent based on safety.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><em>\u2014 With files from The Canadian Press<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/6975738\/failed-venture-unifor-president-long-term-care\/\"><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #4169e1;\">Click here for original article<\/span><\/a><\/p>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(May 24, 2020) By:\u00a0Beatrice Britneff, Global News After witnessing the devastating impact of the\u00a0novel coronavirus\u00a0on many\u00a0long-term care\u00a0homes and its staff, the president of Canada\u2019s largest private sector union says the country needs \u201ca better system than we have today.\u201d \u201cHopefully governments will wake up and will now say: \u2018Look this was a failed venture, we\u2019d [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[21],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-12639","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-ohc-in-the-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
