{"id":12797,"date":"2020-06-04T18:12:23","date_gmt":"2020-06-04T22:12:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/?p=12797"},"modified":"2020-06-12T15:21:20","modified_gmt":"2020-06-12T19:21:20","slug":"unifor-applauds-investigation-of-ontarios-oversight-of-long-term-care-during-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/unifor-applauds-investigation-of-ontarios-oversight-of-long-term-care-during-pandemic\/","title":{"rendered":"Unifor applauds investigation of Ontario&#8217;s oversight of long-term care during pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(June 3, 2020)<\/p>\n<p>By: Stockhouse<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"xn-location\">TORONTO<\/span>,\u00a0<span class=\"xn-chron\">June 3, 2020<\/span>\u00a0\/CNW\/ &#8211; Unifor applauds the decision of the Ontario Ombudsman to investigate the provincial government&#8217;s oversight of long-term care homes during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One thing that we know for certain is that this pandemic publicly exposed the precariousness of the long-term care system that we have been raising red flags about for years now,&#8221; said\u00a0<span class=\"xn-person\">Jerry Dias<\/span>, Unifor National President. &#8220;We know for a fact that if nursing homes were properly staffed, especially with personal support workers, we would have been in a much better position to weather a pandemic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Six months ago, the Ontario Health Coalition report commissioned by Unifor &#8220;<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=2820046-1&amp;h=697868253&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.unifor.org%2Fsites%2Fdefault%2Ffiles%2Fdocuments%2Fdocument%2Ffinal_psw_report.pdf&amp;a=Caring+in+Crisis%3B+Ontario%27s+Personal+Support+Worker+Crisis\" rel=\"nofollow sponsored noopener\">Caring in Crisis;\u00a0<span class=\"xn-location\">Ontario&#8217;s<\/span>\u00a0Personal Support Worker Crisis<\/a><\/span>&#8221; was released at Queens Park. The report, compiled from a series of cross-province roundtable meetings with all stakeholders, raised the alarm over chronic short-staffing and mass exodus of PSWs leaving the industry.<\/p>\n<p>As that report was released, Dias issued a\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=2820046-1&amp;h=1666918481&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FUniforCanada%2Fvideos%2F608151039922620%2F&amp;a=challenge+to+Premier+Doug+Ford\" rel=\"nofollow sponsored noopener\">challenge to Premier\u00a0<span class=\"xn-person\">Doug Ford<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0to spend one shift with him in a nursing home to see first-hand the everyday realities faced by workers and residents.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While we appreciate any effort that puts the spotlight on what is happening in long-term care, it is disappointing that the voices of so many women on the frontlines have been ignored for so long,&#8221; said\u00a0<span class=\"xn-person\">Naureen Rizvi<\/span>, Ontario Regional Director. &#8220;We can only hope that the Ombudsman will focus on listening to those women now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The union believes the pandemic has lit fire to a tinder box of problems, where PSW&#8217;s are first on the front lines. &#8220;No-one should be surprised that eight out of the 11 health care workers who have died from COVID-19 in\u00a0<span class=\"xn-location\">Ontario<\/span>\u00a0are PSWs, who provide the most personal of care, with the least access to personal protective equipment,&#8221; said Dias.<\/p>\n<p>Unifor is\u00a0<span class=\"xn-location\">Canada&#8217;s<\/span>\u00a0largest union in the private sector and represents 315,000 workers in every major area of the economy. The union advocates for all working people and their rights, fights for equality and social justice in\u00a0<span class=\"xn-location\">Canada<\/span>\u00a0and abroad, and strives to create progressive change for a better future.
