{"id":14242,"date":"2020-08-20T17:54:22","date_gmt":"2020-08-20T21:54:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/?p=14242"},"modified":"2020-08-28T17:59:34","modified_gmt":"2020-08-28T21:59:34","slug":"ontario-supply-teachers-left-out-of-covid-19-conversation-group-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/ontario-supply-teachers-left-out-of-covid-19-conversation-group-says\/","title":{"rendered":"Ontario supply teachers left out of COVID-19 conversation, group says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(August 19, 2020)<\/p>\n<p>By: Osobe Waberi, The Canadian Press<\/p>\n<p>TORONTO \u2014 A coalition of Ontario educators says substitute teachers are concerned about health and safety risks related to working in multiple schools as they prepare to return to classrooms in the midst of the <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/coronavirus\/\">COVID-19 pandemic<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Ontario Education Workers United, an organization made up of high school teachers, is the latest to sound the alarm over the Ontario government\u2019s back-to-school plan, which has also drawn criticism from teachers\u2019 unions as well as some parents and students.<\/p>\n<p>The plan, announced weeks before the school year is set to begin, allows elementary students and many high school students to be in class five days a week in standard class sizes.<\/p>\n<p>Occasional workers have been left out of the conversation on how to safely reopen schools, the coalition said.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"c-readmore__label\"><strong>Read more: <\/strong><\/span><a class=\"c-readmore__link\" title=\"Coronavirus: City of Toronto identifies facilities for potential TDSB, TCDSB back-to-school use\" href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/7285135\/coronavirus-toronto-tdsb-tcdsb-facilities\/\" data-track-region=\"content-read-more\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"> Coronavirus: City of Toronto identifies facilities for potential TDSB, TCDSB back-to-school use<\/span> <\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been hearing a lot from occasional workers that they are very worried and feel unseen in this whole process,\u201d said James Campbell, one of the group\u2019s organizers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are often the most precarious of all educational workers because they are often earlier in their career and don\u2019t always have permanent contracts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Salima Kassam, a supply teacher working within the Toronto District School Board, says many substitute educators find themselves forced to take up short-term contractual work in different schools to make ends meet.<\/p>\n<p>In the past year alone, Kassam said she has worked at four schools within the TDSB in short-term contract positions.
