PHOTO BY SUBMITTED PHOTO<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Simon Nisbet has much to be thankful for on Thanksgiving Day.<\/p>\n<p>His mom Doreen is alive and doing well at 89 because he pulled her out of Orchard Villa and got her into hospital before COVID-19 and the lack of care \u2014 well documented in the media and by the Canadian military \u2014 could end her life.<\/p>\n<p>From the time he was contacted after his mom tested COVID-positive on April 22 and the deaths started mounting, he\u2019d visit her every day at her window and see her \u201cdeteriorating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When he finally got a call from a doctor on May 3, he was told only that she\u2019d had a sip of water and then \u201ceverything went silent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was a \u201ctrigger,\u201d he said, and it was at that point he pleaded to have her moved to the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithin 48 hours I had her out of there,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019d learned that his mom had pneumonia, her kidneys were failing and she was extremely dehydrated.<\/p>\n<p>Pickering\u2019s Orchard Villa, operated by Southbridge Care Homes,\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/torontosun.com\/news\/provincial\/hospital-taking-over-care-at-covid-19-ravaged-pickering-ltc-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">was the hardest-hit LTC home in Ontario<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>and was cited in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/torontosun.com\/news\/provincial\/armed-forces-report-on-ontario-long-term-care-deeply-disturbing-pm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Canadian military report for horrendous examples of negligence<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embedded-video\">\n<div class=\"video-placeholder\">\n<div class=\"placeholder-inner\">\n<div class=\"ytp-spinner\">\n<div class=\"ytp-spinner-container\">\n<div class=\"ytp-spinner-rotator\">\n<div class=\"ytp-spinner-left\">\n<p>It took her two months to recuperate in hospital and Doreen is now in another home \u2014 Fairview Lodge \u2014 in Whitby where she\u2019s \u201cdoing much better,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an extreme load off my mind,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s also easy for me to be very angry.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"embedded-video\">\n<p style=\"padding-right: 150px;\"><iframe style=\"display: block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span>Analysis<\/strong><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>NIsbet, who acted quickly and advocated for his mom, is one of the lucky ones.<\/p>\n<p>He will be speaking about\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/torontosun.com\/news\/provincial\/ontario-to-update-schools-child-care-as-economy-starts-to-reopen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">his experiences to the Ontario Long-Term Care Commission<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in a few weeks.<\/p>\n<p>He feels there\u2019s something \u201cseriously seriously wrong\u201d with a long-term care system that has a \u201cterrible\u201d timeline of inspections \u2014 where follow-up and monitoring is selective and sporadic, where there are no fines for bad operators, or the lifting of licenses or the stopping of intakes.<\/p>\n<p>The 1,888 seniors (as of Oct. 10) who have succumbed to COVID-19 in Ontario long-term care homes \u2014 or due to the isolation and malnutrition \u2014 were not so lucky.<\/p>\n<p>The three-member commission \u2014 headed by Chief Justice Frank Marrocco \u2014<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">\u00a0<a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/torontosun.com\/news\/provincial\/walkerton-inquiry-judge-to-lead-ontarios-ltc-commission\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stated at the end of July that they have a clear mandate to investigate how and why COVID-19 spread in long-term care homes<\/a><\/span>, what was done to prevent the spread, and how the system impacted on the spread<\/p>\n<p>Despite the Commission and the findings of the Canadian military, it would seem few lessons have been learned as the province heads into the second wave of COVID.<\/p>\n<p>Ontario Health Coalition executive director Natalie Mehra said what has happened during the last month in Ottawa long-term care homes has \u201cstruck a chill\u201d through her heart.<\/p>\n<p>On August 30 there was an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UphD8uFtx1k?embed_config={%27relatedChannels%27:%20[],%27autonav%27:true}&amp;autoplay=0&amp;playsinline=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">outbreak declared at West End Villa<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embedded-video\">\n<p style=\"padding-right: 150px;\"><iframe style=\"display: block; height: 360px; width: 480px; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/durPg-WqX0Q\" width=\"100%\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><span style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\"><span style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span>\ufeff<\/span><strong><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span>Analysis<\/strong><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<p>Some 123 staff and residents tested positive for COVID-19 and 19 people have died.<\/p>\n<p>She said despite declarations by the ministry of health that the home had PPE and enough staff,\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/ottawasun.com\/news\/local-news\/public-health-orders-hospital-to-take-over-management-of-long-term-care-homes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">staff came out publicly to say they did not have N95 masks to work with COVID sufferers<\/a><\/span>\u00a0and families confirmed that residents were still sharing rooms with COVID-positive residents.<\/p>\n<p>There was no isolation procedures either at the 243-bed home, she said.<\/p>\n<p>She added that staff were reporting that were two PSWs for 60 COVID-positive patients.<\/p>\n<p>Mehra said the Ontario government did not put in place a \u201csystematic response\u201d of measures for incompetent and negligent homes as soon as COVID hit.<\/p>\n<p>While there was a significant funding boost of $403-million for COVID costs in LTC homes, \u201cnothing has happened in Ontario\u201d to get the LTC staffing levels up \u2014 that is, no big recruitment policy to get proper staff in.<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, Quebec launched a strategy over the summer to hire 10,000 PSWs \u2014 training them and improving their wages in LTC homes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing substantial has happened at all,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also been little attention paid to the devastating impact of long-term isolation as the province heads into another lockdown.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Vivian Stamatopoulos, an associate teaching professor at Ontario\u2019s Tech University, said the LTC commission transcripts have already provided a \u201cpainful validation\u201d of \u201cdiscriminatory and unduly punitive restrictions\u201d for seniors in care.<\/p>\n<p>She said a \u201cpaternalistic and incomplete medical model\u201d that prioritized the risk of virus transmission above the risks of prolonged isolation produced \u201cpandemic prisons\u201d that stripped the rights of our seniors in care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the second wave underway and outbreaks beginning to spread across LTC homes, we must heed the words of our seniors and staunchly defend and strengthen their rights to family access.,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe simply cannot re-victimize them again\u2026they won\u2019t survive it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/torontosun.com\/news\/local-news\/levy-ltc-homes-not-ready-for-second-wave-say-advocates\">Click here for original article<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(October 12, 2020) By: Sue-Ann Levy, Toronto Sun Simon Nisbet and mom Doreen in better times.
