{"id":15606,"date":"2020-12-19T16:47:24","date_gmt":"2020-12-19T21:47:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/?p=15606"},"modified":"2021-01-04T16:50:18","modified_gmt":"2021-01-04T21:50:18","slug":"union-representing-staff-at-hamiltons-grace-villa-describes-horrible-outbreak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/union-representing-staff-at-hamiltons-grace-villa-describes-horrible-outbreak\/","title":{"rendered":"Union representing staff at Hamilton\u2019s Grace Villa describes \u2018horrible\u2019 outbreak"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(December 18, 2020)<\/p>\n<p>By: Ken Mann, 900 CHML Global News<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Grace-Villa.jpg?quality=85&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1200\" alt=\"21 residents of Grace Villa have died of COVID-19, since an outbreak was declared Nov 25.\" width=\"524\" height=\"295\" \/><\/p>\n<p>21 residents of Grace Villa have died of COVID-19, since an outbreak was declared Nov 25.<\/p>\n<p>A union representative for<a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/long-term-care\/\">\u00a0long-term care workers<\/a>\u00a0at Grace Villa \u2014 the site of Hamilton\u2019s deadliest\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/coronavirus\/\">COVID-19<\/a> outbreak \u2014 has offered a glimpse inside the embattled home.<\/p>\n<p>Ricardo McKenzie with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) calls the situation at Grace Villa \u201chorrible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McKenzie says the staffing had reached a \u201ccrisis\u201d level, prior to Hamilton Health Sciences temporarily taking over operations of the East Mountain facility earlier this week, under a 90-day, voluntary management contract.<\/p>\n<p>McKenzie describes deplorable conditions, including \u201cIV bags that are left on the floors, residents in feces not being cleaned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Within the 184-bed facility, McKenzie says, a combined total of 173 residents and staff of Grace Villa have been infected with COVID-19, 21 of the residents have died.<\/p>\n<p>He says workers have asked for testing of the home\u2019s ventilation system, \u201cbecause they couldn\u2019t explain for themselves, why the hell the virus is spreading so rapidly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McKenzie says they don\u2019t know yet if the operator will comply with that request.<\/p>\n<p>He adds that front-line staff are \u201cholding the ship afloat, but unfortunately, they\u2019re very tired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The snapshot of the situation at Grace Villa came during the Ontario Health Coalition\u2019s release of a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/report-covid-19-second-wave-survey-of-staff-in-long-term-care-homes-with-large-outbreaks\/\">survey of members<\/a>\u00a0who are working within long-term care homes that have experienced large outbreaks.<\/p>\n<p>OHC Executive Director Natalie Mehra said less than 30 per cent of those on the front lines say they have \u201cenough staffing to provide daily hands-on care to residents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among the other findings, said Mehra, 14.7 per cent of respondents said that COVID-19-positive but asymptomatic staff are being required to work and 14.6 per cent said COVID-19-positive residents are not being separated from those who are not infected with the virus.<\/p>\n<p>The coalition\u2019s survey involved employees at dozens of long-term care homes across Ontario, including Grace Villa.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/7531188\/hamiltons-grace-villa-covid-19-conditions\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Click here for original article<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(December 18, 2020) By: Ken Mann, 900 CHML Global News 21 residents of Grace Villa have died of COVID-19, since an outbreak was declared Nov 25.
