Then she&#8217;d rub alcohol on her body before going up to have a shower. Then, finally, she&#8217;d get to hug her four boys \u2014 even though fears about infecting her family with COVID-19 still lingered in her mind.<\/p>\n<section id=\"inread-wrapper-id-21967177\"><\/section>\n<p>&#8220;My kids have become so programmed now that they ask me, &#8216;Can I touch you now? Do you have coronavirus?'&#8221; she recalled. &#8220;That truly breaks my heart.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dolkar, who worked in front-line patient care in Toronto and is now in\u00a0a public health role, is one of thousands of Ontario health-care workers facing constant fear and stress as the pandemic enters its second year.<\/p>\n<div>\n<ul class=\"similarLinks\">\n<li class=\"similarListItem\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a class=\"similarLink\" style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/calgary\/calgary-icu-beds-1.5844391\" data-contentid=\"\"><span class=\"similarLinkText\">Doctors says it&#8217;s &#8216;day-to-day survival mode&#8217; as Calgary ICUs stretch surge capacity<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>New Canadian research also suggests feelings of burnout were high long before COVID-19 arrived in Canada \u2014 particularly among nurses \u2014 which is prompting concern that months of heightened pressure is taking an even greater toll on health-care workers and their ability to do their jobs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The stress at work, the stress of not being able to do things, the human touch that&#8217;s not there, the additional workload of donning PPE, has all added to the work stress,&#8221; Dolkar said.<\/p>\n<h2>High levels of pre-pandemic burnout<\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;Burnout&#8221; is the term for a common reaction to unrelenting stress in the workplace, manifesting in emotional, physical and mental exhaustion that can suck the joy out of doing a job and reduce someone&#8217;s motivation.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the start of the pandemic, a research team led by vascular surgeon Dr. Barry Rubin \u2014 the chair and program medical director at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre at Toronto General Hospital \u2014 surveyed\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cmajopen.ca\/content\/9\/1\/E10\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">physicians<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/cmajopen.ca\/content\/9\/1\/E19\">nurses<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/cmajopen.ca\/content\/9\/1\/E29\">allied health professionals<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>to gauge their level of burnout.<\/p>\n<div>\n<ul class=\"similarLinks\">\n<li class=\"similarListItem\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a class=\"similarLink\" style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/radio\/thecurrent\/the-current-for-dec-17-2020-1.5845164\/it-s-quite-demoralizing-midwives-feeling-overworked-undervalued-in-pandemic-1.5845816\" data-contentid=\"\"><span class=\"similarLinkText\">&#8216;It&#8217;s quite demoralizing&#8217;: Midwives feeling overworked, undervalued in pandemic<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>Those results, set to be published on Tuesday in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, suggest front-line staff across the board were\u00a0coping with some degree of burnout.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What we found was really surprising,&#8221; said Rubin. &#8220;The levels of burnout were very high.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 78 per cent of nurses who responded to the survey reported feeling a sense of burnout in the previous month.<\/p>\n<p>So did roughly 73 per cent of allied health professionals \u2014 such as physical, respiratory and occupational therapists, pharmacists, social workers, dietitians and speech-language pathologists \u2014 and roughly 65 per cent of physicians who responded to the survey.<\/p>\n<p>Burnout and distress both have a negative impact on health-care workers &#8220;and the treatment they provide,&#8221; Rubin&#8217;s team states in the research.<\/p>\n<p>The survey tool measured fatigue, depression, burnout, anxiety or stress, mental and physical quality of life, work-life integration, meaning in work\u00a0and distress.<\/p>\n<div>\n<ul class=\"similarLinks\">\n<li class=\"similarListItem\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a class=\"similarLink\" style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/edmonton\/edmonton-doctor-long-term-care-covid-1.5829157\" data-contentid=\"\"><span class=\"similarLinkText\">Edmonton physician says informing families of COVID deaths comes at a personal cost<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>Conducted in late 2018 and early 2019, the poll focused only on survey respondents who were among the staff at Toronto General&#8217;s cardiovascular centre, but the results are in line with high rates of burnout reported elsewhere pre-pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If it was that bad before, what&#8217;s it going to be now?&#8221; said Rubin, who wants to conduct another survey mid-pandemic.<\/p>\n<h2>Strain on workers a &#8216;vicious cycle&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Dolkar, the Whitby-based nurse, isn&#8217;t surprised that burnout levels are high among her profession, and agreed there&#8217;s added stress from the all-consuming pressures of COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>Front-line nurses are &#8220;the backbone of the Canadian health-care system&#8221; and need to be at the table for policy-making, she said, but instead they often face the strain of job cuts and understaffing.<\/p>\n<div>\n<ul class=\"similarLinks\">\n<li class=\"similarListItem\"><a class=\"similarLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/bc-healthcare-workers-burnout-1.5813715\" data-contentid=\"\"><span class=\"similarLinkText\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">B.C. health-care workers plead for public to follow COVID-19 orders amid burnout fears<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s just a vicious cycle that&#8217;s affecting patient safety, that&#8217;s affecting our safety, and you&#8217;re also just prone to slip-ups \u2014 that&#8217;s human nature,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Personal support workers coping with staggering death tolls as a result of\u00a0long-term care outbreaks have also faced major burnout during\u00a0the pandemic,\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/radio\/whitecoat\/psw-draws-attention-to-burnt-out-staff-as-covid-19-compounds-long-term-care-crisis-1.5556752\"><u>CBC News has previously reported<\/u><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s another instance of the\u00a0months-long health-care crisis compounding existing issues.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/sudbury\/ontario-health-report-psw-1.5468946\"><u>One report from the Ontario Health Coalition<\/u><\/a><\/span>, released in February 2020, found most long-term care homes were short-staffed on every shift and experienced\u00a0poor working conditions even before the novel coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>Paramedics, long prone to job-driven stress, are struggling more than usual in recent months, said Mike Merriman, the paramedic and EMS unit chair for CUPE Local 416, a union representing Toronto Paramedic Services.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re overwhelmed, they&#8217;re exhausted, they&#8217;re emotionally drained, they feel defeated,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The union has been surveying its members, Merriman said, and the responses so far have ranged from accounts of crying between calls\u00a0to constant fear while donning and doffing protective gear\u00a0to the newfound stress of not being able to find public washrooms while on the road.<\/p>\n<div>\n<ul class=\"similarLinks\">\n<li class=\"similarListItem\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a class=\"similarLink\" style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/radio\/thehouse\/pandemic-covid-coronavirus-icu-alberta-1.5809999\" data-contentid=\"\"><span class=\"similarLinkText\">&#8216;We&#8217;re not even at the peak yet&#8217;: Doctor warns of pandemic burnout as 2nd wave grows<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;One member said he developed a urinary tract infection from holding his bladder so much,&#8221; Merriman said. &#8220;We&#8217;ve heard of some that are terrified of taking [the virus]\u00a0back to their family.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The union shared some of the paramedics&#8217; survey responses with CBC News, which included statements such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;I did not kiss my infant child for the first five months of the pandemic.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;My spouse and I debated if I would need a live-in apartment in the basement in case I had an exposure.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;I&#8217;ve developed eczema on my hands and arms due to sanitizing my hands so frequently.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;[Not having a] regular partner makes it hard to get into a rhythm or even have a support system. I also experienced a very difficult call that triggered PTSD and severe depression\u00a0that I think was even harder to manage due to my isolation.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;As medics we quite often deal with life and death every single day. Unfortunately, the death portion has been more heavily experienced throughout the pandemic, particularly with the elderly, as we all know.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>&#8216;We fear for our own safety&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>While physicians responded with the lowest level of burnout among those surveyed by Rubin and his team before the pandemic, some warn those on the front line are likely faring worse now.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Samantha Hill, president of the Ontario Medical Association, said more attention needs to be paid to the strain faced by individual physicians who are juggling the same stresses as the general population, from home-schooling their kids to facing the risk of getting infected themselves.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We really need to remember that physicians are people,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<div>\n<ul class=\"similarLinks\">\n<li class=\"similarListItem\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a class=\"similarLink\" style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/edmonton\/covid-19-hospitals-workers-mental-health-1.5796038\" data-contentid=\"\"><span class=\"similarLinkText\">Rising COVID-19 cases taking toll on Edmonton hospital staff<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>Dolkar said it&#8217;s the same for nurses and any health-care workers on the front lines: They&#8217;re coping with the stress of their jobs and the daily fear of spreading the virus among other staff, patients\u00a0or their\u00a0own loved ones.<\/p>\n<p>While health-care workers are trying their best to provide compassionate care, Dolkar stressed it&#8217;s a constant challenge when they&#8217;re bogged down with time-consuming protocols and restrictions that limit their contact with patients and restrict those people from seeing their families.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We fear for our own safety,&#8221; she said, &#8220;and that hinders the care that you have always provided.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/health-care-workers-battled-burnout-before-covid-19-now-it-s-even-worse-experts-warn-1.5869072\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Click here for original article<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(January 12, 2021) By: Lauren Pelley, CBC News 78% of nurse respondents reported feelings of burnout, pre-pandemic survey found.
