And she thought it couldn\u2019t possibly happen again.<\/p>\n<p>But she told a three-hour online call to action Friday \u2014 hosted by the Ontario Health Care Coalition and attended by more than 300 people at any one time \u2014 she was absolutely \u201chorrified\u201d to learn of the situation at Tendercare Living Centre, where 81 residents have died and 184 tested positive for the virus at Christmas time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow could this be happening \u2026 eight months later have we learned nothing from wave one?\u201d she asked. \u201cIt\u2019s like deja vu.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said the \u201cscale and severity\u201d of wave two has made it clear the measures in place are inadequate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOntario has fumbled (yet again) and seniors are paying with their lives,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>As of Friday there have been 3,502 deaths in LTC homes \u2014 3,491 of them residents and 11 staff.<\/p>\n<p>Lee said the long-term care system is clearly \u201cbroken\u201d and the warehousing and neglect of seniors has added up to the \u201chorrific trampling of basic human rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSOS \u2026 Save Our Seniors!\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the protest \u2014 during which advocates and families who either have loved ones in LTC facilities or lost loved ones during the second wave spoke from the heart\u2013 the messages were the same.<\/p>\n<p>For all their talk, the Ford government appears to believe seniors are dispensable and the promised iron ring around LTC homes never materialized.<\/p>\n<p>We heard that, yet again, LTC homes, particularly the for-profit ones, were caught flat-footed during the second wave with not enough PPE, or worse, not enough frontline workers \u2014 even though they had the entire summer to prepare.<\/p>\n<p>We heard, yet again, there are few inspections of LTC homes under the Ford government and there are no consequences for homes found to be neglectful during both waves of COVID.<\/p>\n<p>Jane Meadus, a longtime lawyer at the Advocacy Centre for the Elderly, said there were no consequences for Southbridge Care Homes, which owns Orchard Villa where 70 residents succumbed to the first wave. In fact, she said they were given 87 new LTC beds by the province.<\/p>\n<p>Meadus said not one LTC home has been charged during this horrible crisis \u2014 not even criminal charges for allowing residents to die of malnutrition and dehydration during the two waves of COVID-19.<\/p>\n<section class=\"more-topic\" aria-labelledby=\"moreTopicLabel\">\n<div class=\"more-topic__items\">\n<article class=\"more-topic__item\">\n<h3 class=\"more-topic__item-text\"><span class=\"more-topic__item-text-clamp\">lockdowns immeasurable for seniors<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p>And she said even though essential visitors should be allowed, some big chains are refusing access to loved ones at a time when residents need love and stimulation.<\/p>\n<p>Vivian Stamatopoulos, an associate professor at Ontario Tech University and a strong advocate for seniors in LTC facilities, said not only has Long-Term Care Minister Merrilee Fullerton been spreading misinformation, but as far as she knows Fullerton has been missing in action.<\/p>\n<p>The minister has not stepped foot in one LTC home during this recent outbreak, Stamatopoulos said, a claim confirmed by her spokesman Krystle Caputo.<\/p>\n<p>Caputo said Fullerton is neither staff, nor an essential caregiver.<\/p>\n<p>However, she said the minister is in \u201congoing contact\u201d with LTC homes, health care teams and the hospital partners who are administering care in homes (in massive outbreak).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe (the minister) remains focused on addressing the challenges facing long-term care right now,\u201d said Caputo. \u201cAnd (she) must prioritize working with our partners as we act swiftly to address the second wave of the virus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"mailto:SLevy@postmedia.com\">SLevy@postmedia.com<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/torontosun.com\/news\/local-news\/levy-ford-government-dropped-the-ball-big-time-on-seniors\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Click here for original article<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(January 30, 2021) By: Sue-Ann Levy, Toronto Sun There have so far been 3,502 deaths in LTC homes &#8212; 3,491 residents and 11 staff Foon Hay Lum, 111, died during a COVID-19 outbreak at Mon Sheong Homes seniors\u2019 residence in April 2020.\u00a0PHOTO BY SUPPLIED Helen Lee never thought she\u2019d see a repeat of what she [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[21],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-16077","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-ohc-in-the-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
