The sample was isolated from a patient in the U.S. PHOTO BY SUPPLIED \/The Canadian Press<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Northern Ontario \u201ccan\u2019t afford people coming up from southern Ontario\u201d as a more virulent form of the novel coronavirus is spreading, Northern members of the Ontario Health Coalition said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a virtual news conference, representatives from across the North stopped short of calling for a Northern Ontario bubble, but stressed the need to prevent COVID-19 and its variants from spreading further across the province.<\/p>\n<div id=\"featured-video\" class=\"featured-video distroscale js-widget-distroscale\">\n<div class=\"video-placeholder\">\n<div class=\"placeholder-inner\">\n<div class=\"ytp-spinner\">\n<div class=\"ytp-spinner-container\">\n<div class=\"ytp-spinner-rotator\">\n<div class=\"ytp-spinner-left\">\n<section class=\"article-content__content-group\">\u201cSo far we have been good,\u201d Ben Lefebvre of Iroquois Falls said, but \u201cwe want to protect ourselves. It\u2019s only fair that Northern Ontario residents have some protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Greater Sudbury Mayor Brian Bigger has called on the provincial government to create a Northern Ontario bubble to protect Northerners from COVID-19 and its new, deadlier variants.<\/p>\n<p>Bigger wants to explore options to reduce travel to and from the region by establishing OPP checkpoints along Highway 69 to monitor travel, similar to what Quebec implemented last fall. He hopes that it will deter traffic between regions.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s supported by former Sudbury mayor and MPP Jim Gordon, who argues that the North has a higher proportion of seniors and Indigenous people than the rest of Ontario and as such, should be greater protected.<\/p>\n<p>The health coalition noted the emergence of at least one variant \u2013 the U.K. variant (B.1.1.7) \u2013 in the region, which is more transmissible than the original virus. That includes an outbreak at the Skyline Lancelot Apartments in North Bay, where 19 residents and two visitors tested positive for COVID-19, with three of those \u201clikely the U.K. variant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Jan. 25, there were 38 confirmed cases of the variant in the province. As of Tuesday, there were 227 confirmed cases of the variant, according to coalition executive director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timminspress.com\/news\/local-news\/health-coalition-rejects-call-for-northern-ontario-bubble\">Natalie Mehra<\/a>, and another 200 to 300 are being investigated.<\/p>\n<p>And while members of the coalition discussed a Northern Ontario bubble, they decided not to ask that one be implemented.<\/p>\n<p>Mehra did call on the province to offer clearer direction to residents and businesses on what should or should not be allowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would have hoped (before) any further opening of the economy, of the schools, of more businesses, that it would be associated with clear directions from the province,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She said other countries have had to resort to \u201chard lockdowns\u201d to keep the virus under control. \u201cI am shocked to have the province reopen with no clear measures in place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are in danger,\u201d she said, and the Doug Ford government should deliver \u201ca strong, clear message \u2026 about travel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to make sure the communities understand the risk with travel,\u201d Mehra said. \u201cWe are calling on the public to understand what is happening \u2026 and to curtail unnecessary travel\u201d to stop the spread, especially as the March break nears.<\/p>\n<p>The province has yet to formally announce whether the March break will take place as scheduled, or be delayed until at least April.<\/p>\n<p>And if there is to be a March break, it\u2019s even more important to urge the provincial government to implement measures that further limit numbers of people inside buildings, prevent large gatherings, enforce cleaning and sanitation regulations and issue fines for those who don\u2019t adhere to the provincial measures, Mehra said.<\/p>\n<p>She agreed people should not travel from one region to another.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are in even more danger now\u201d with the variants out there, she said, and they have the potential to make the situation much, much worse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is hope here. The vaccine is rolling out,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Coalition members from around the North shared their experiences with COVID-19. Nearly all the Northern Ontario chapters saw a marked increase in COVID-19 numbers over the Christmas holidays when travel and larger gatherings were held. They fear that without limits on travel, the pandemic will spread further.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are really concerned,\u201d said Dorothy Klein, Sudbury Health Coalition co-chair said, pointing to the outbreak of the variant in North Bay and the fact that Sudbury is one of three major routes to Northern Ontario from the south.<\/p>\n<p>There have been 546 cases of COVID-19 in the Sudbury region and 10 deaths.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very concerned,\u201d she said, sharing the advice of others that those who want to travel should just \u201cstay home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are all making a lot of concessions to this,\u201d she said, promising that \u201cwe will get through this and we will come through much more unified.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cViruses don\u2019t move. People move it,\u201d Marie DellaVedova from the Algoma Health Coalition said.<\/p>\n<p>She noted that in her region, many of the cases in both the first and second waves of the pandemic have been linked to travel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know gatherings lead to exposure and spread,\u201d she said and pointed to a high-risk exposure at a New Year\u2019s Eve party in Sault Ste. Marie.<\/p>\n<p>DellaVedova said travel restrictions, which have been in place since the pandemic began, have proven successful in the Algoma region. But she also admitted it has been \u201ca really long, long year\u201d with the restrictions in place.<\/p>\n<p>But now is not the time to ease off, and the travel restrictions residents should be following have to remain in place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t come up here,\u201d Jules Tupker, chair of the Thunder Bay Health Coalition, urged. \u201cStay home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thunder Bay has recorded 1,083 cases with 27 deaths. Twenty-four of those deaths occurred in one long-term care home.<\/p>\n<p>And many of the cases recorded in the Thunder Bay area, Tupker said, were linked to travel to Winnipeg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very concerned about people moving around,\u201d he said. \u201cEverybody is getting a little crazy\u201d with the stay-at-home orders, but the evidence points to people traveling for the continuing crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Al Dupuis, a coalition member from Blind River, said his community has shown that \u201cwhen an area is isolated, there is a marked difference in the rates of infection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His community had no cases \u201cuntil very recently,\u201d and the cases it has reported were associated with travel outside the region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to step up to the plate,\u201d he said. \u201cWe need to keep it up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timminspress.com\/news\/local-news\/health-coalition-rejects-call-for-northern-ontario-bubble\">Click here for original article<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(February 11, 2021) By: PJ Wilson, Timmins Daily Press This undated electron microscope image made available by the U.S. National Institutes of Health in February 2020 shows the Novel Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, orange, emerging from the surface of cells, green, cultured in the lab.
