Eight projects were announced Monday, with the two local projects expected to train up to 50 PSWs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-block-container\"><a class=\"text-block__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thespec.com\/news\/hamilton-region\/2020\/12\/18\/what-i-walked-into-was-awful-says-nurse-about-grace-villa-covid-outbreak.html\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Staffing<\/span><\/a>\u00a0has been an<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">\u00a0<a class=\"text-block__link\" style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thespec.com\/news\/hamilton-region\/2020\/11\/17\/covid-cases-are-exploding-in-long-term-care-and-retirement-homes.html\">ongoing problem<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a class=\"text-block__link\" style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thespec.com\/news\/hamilton-region\/2021\/01\/30\/they-should-have-got-help-in-there-faster-says-nurse-who-worked-at-grace-villa-when-outbreak-started.html\">long-term care<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>exacerbated by the pandemic, with\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a class=\"text-block__link\" style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thespec.com\/news\/hamilton-region\/2020\/12\/08\/it-will-always-haunt-me-that-i-wasnt-there-caregiver-mourns-husband-while-governments-seek-balance-in-long-term-care-home-visitor-policies.html\">greater demand<\/a><\/span>\u00a0for workers once residents become sick, and\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a class=\"text-block__link\" style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thespec.com\/news\/hamilton-region\/2020\/12\/22\/a-hard-reality-for-long-term-care-as-hamilton-facilities-grapple-with-more-deaths-and-cases.html\">staff getting COVID-19<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>or leaving the sector.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-block-container\">The project at Mohawk is expected to produce up to 20 \u201cjob-ready\u201d workers who would receive access to employment and training services in health care. The province designated $265,810 for the project which runs from April 1 to Nov. 30.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-block-container\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a class=\"text-block__link\" style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thespec.com\/news\/hamilton-region\/2020\/11\/18\/staff-funding-shortages-leave-hamilton-patients-without-options-for-home-care.html\">Home care<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>company ParaMed Inc., in Burlington and Hamilton, was allotted $64,196 for 30 participants to take a fast-track PSW program at Conestoga College. That project began Feb. 15 and will run to July 10.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-block-container\">An additional $249,981 will go to research spearheaded by St. Michael\u2019s Hospital in Toronto to develop support resources for PSWs. CARE+ is expected to include education on infection prevention and control and other resources, including what to do if a PSW or their close contact gets sick with COVID-19. The resources would be shared with workers at 48 homes, as well as online provincewide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-block-container\">However, the\u00a0<a class=\"text-block__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Ontario Health Coalition<\/span><\/a>\u00a0said the announcement is \u201cso inadequate as to be unconscionable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-block-container\">\u201cThis number of PSWs would not be enough to improve care in one middle-sized town, let alone across nine regions encompassing half the population of the province,\u201d the group said in a release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-block-container\">The coalition estimates that to provide four hours of daily care to each resident \u2014 which the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a class=\"text-block__link\" style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/page\/better-place-live-better-place-work-ontarios-long-term-care-staffing-plan\">province has promised<\/a><\/span>\u00a0by 2024-25 \u2014 Ontario needs the equivalent of roughly 20,800 additional full-time staff, including PSWs and nurses, for existing long-term-care beds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-block-container\">If the 15,000 new<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">\u00a0<a class=\"text-block__link\" style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/news.ontario.ca\/mltc\/en\/2019\/10\/ontario-one-step-closer-to-creating-15000-new-long-term-care-beds.html\">long-term-care beds<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>promised by the province are included, the group said that number would be about 33,700 full-time staff, or 44,900 full-time and part-time workers combined.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thespec.com\/news\/hamilton-region\/2021\/02\/22\/hamilton-to-receive-funds-to-train-more-psws-for-long-term-care.html?source=newsletter&amp;utm_content=a06&amp;utm_source=ml_nl&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_email=D2560C0A4DECAFDAAD6AB9E4982348FC&amp;utm_campaign=hsha_93719\">Click here for original article<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(February 22, 2021) By: Maria Iqbal, The Hamilton Spectator Two Hamilton-area sites are among the recipients of\u00a0new provincial funding\u00a0to train more workers\u00a0for long-term care,\u00a0but critics say it\u2019s not nearly enough.
