{"id":16523,"date":"2021-03-18T12:59:38","date_gmt":"2021-03-18T16:59:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/?p=16523"},"modified":"2021-03-29T13:02:36","modified_gmt":"2021-03-29T17:02:36","slug":"health-coalition-wants-formal-inquiry-into-poor-health-care-treatment-of-the-elderly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/health-coalition-wants-formal-inquiry-into-poor-health-care-treatment-of-the-elderly\/","title":{"rendered":"Health coalition wants formal inquiry into poor health care treatment of the elderly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(March 17, 2021)<\/p>\n<p>By: MidlandToday Staff<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vmcdn.ca\/f\/files\/halifaxtoday\/images\/health\/090518-senior-health-care-long-term-elderly-adobestock_87216627.jpeg;w=960\" alt=\"090518-senior-health care-long term-elderly-AdobeStock_87216627\" width=\"367\" height=\"259\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>(File photo)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.midlandtoday.ca\/coronavirus-covid-19-local-news\/health-coalition-wants-formal-inquiry-into-poor-health-care-treatment-of-the-elderly-3552530\">Ontario Health Coalition<\/a> (OHC) said the poor treatment of the elderly in Ontario hospitals and long-term care homes has gone on long enough.<\/p>\n<p>The OHC is pushing to have a formal inquiry into what it says is the &#8220;systemic discrimination based on age against the elderly in the provision of hospital and long-term care in Ontario.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"widget widget-wysiwyg theme-blue widget-inject widget-inject-left widget-injected\" data-id=\"185191\" data-widget=\"6\" data-per=\"30\" data-min=\"\">\n<div class=\"section-items section-wysiwyg clearfix\">\n<div id=\"slimcut_outstream\">The coalition will be holding<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"> <a class=\"ga ga-ext\" style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/letter-events-call-for-human-rights-inquiry-into-systemic-discrimination-against-the-elderly-in-ontario-hospitals-and-long-term-care\/?utm_source=midlandtoday.ca&amp;utm_campaign=midlandtoday.ca&amp;utm_medium=referral\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ga-category=\"OutboundLink\" data-ga-action=\"OutboundLink\" data-ga-label=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/letter-events-call-for-human-rights-inquiry-into-systemic-discrimination-against-the-elderly-in-ontario-hospitals-and-long-term-care\/\">a series of news conferences<\/a><\/span>\u00a0across the province in the next two weeks to raise awareness of its concerns. The position is shared by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), CUPE\u2019s Ontario Council of Hospital Unions (OCHU\/CUPE) and the Advocacy Centre for Elderly (ACE).<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>They are calling on the Ontario Human Rights Commission to conduct a landmark inquiry into the provincial government\u2019s long-standing \u2018de-hospitalization\u2019 and rationing of hospital and long-term care. OHC said these are health policies that disproportionately hurt the elderly.<\/p>\n<p>OHC also said age discrimination has occurred routinely as Ontario copes with its lack of hospital capacity by denying or restricting access to hospital care for the elderly.<\/p>\n<p>They said similar denial of adequate access and care has occurred for long-term care.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This has become tragically acute and brutally obvious during the COVID-19 pandemic when the vast majority of long-term care residents critically ill from the virus were not taken to hospital, leaving them and thousands more in woefully inadequate long-term care, where nearly 4000 of them died,&#8221; said a statement from OHC on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The OHC began the awareness tour in Ottawa and Pembroke on Tuesday and will continue throughout the province until Friday March 26 with news conferences in Kenora, Dryden, Fort Frances and Sioux Lookout.
