{"id":16865,"date":"2021-05-05T09:01:59","date_gmt":"2021-05-05T13:01:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/?p=16865"},"modified":"2021-05-31T09:05:10","modified_gmt":"2021-05-31T13:05:10","slug":"will-covid-19-vaccinations-bring-fresh-air-to-some-caledon-seniors-after-months-of-isolation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/will-covid-19-vaccinations-bring-fresh-air-to-some-caledon-seniors-after-months-of-isolation\/","title":{"rendered":"Will COVID-19 vaccinations bring fresh air to some Caledon seniors after months of isolation?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(May 4, 2021)<\/p>\n<p>By: Alexandra Heck, Caledon Enterprise<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"article-p___34jbX\" data-lpos=\"article|body\">The closest Inge Hoare has gotten to her 98-year-old mother, Marie Placzek, in the past year is through the window of Placzek&#8217;s room at King Nursing Home in Bolton.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"article-p___34jbX\" data-lpos=\"article|body\">\u201cShe\u2019s one of the lucky ones,\u201d Hoare said, noting that they wouldn\u2019t be able to have window visits if Placzek didn\u2019t live on the ground floor.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"article-p___34jbX\" data-lpos=\"article|body\">She says Placzek enjoys being at the home, but the months of COVID-19 restrictions are wearing her out.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"article-p___34jbX\" data-lpos=\"article|body\">\u201cI think she\u2019s fed up,\u201d Hoare said, adding that they are hoping to be able to have some sort of outdoor visit as the weather gets warmer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"article-p___34jbX\" data-lpos=\"article|body\">Her daughter and niece have applied to be caregivers and take COVID-19 tests regularly to make visits to the home.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"article-p___34jbX\" data-lpos=\"article|body\">The cranks to open windows have been removed from rooms at the King Nursing Home after a woman fell from a third-storey window in 2011.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"article-p___34jbX\" data-lpos=\"article|body\">Hoare said her daughter brought a handle from home to crack open the window for a little fresh air. It made the day for Placzek, said Hoare.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"article-p___34jbX\" data-lpos=\"article|body\">King Nursing Home experienced a COVID-19 outbreak in December 2020 that was resolved in February, says Janice King, executive director of the home.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"article-p___34jbX\" data-lpos=\"article|body\">\u201cThe isolation of the residents was a large concern for the staff and for the families, and heartbreaking,\u201d King said. \u201cWe, as staff, know the effect the regional lockdowns have had on ourselves, but we understand it and we get to go home after work.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"article-p___34jbX\" data-lpos=\"article|body\">She said that the restrictions were particularly difficult for those living with dementia, who may not have understood what was happening.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"article-p___34jbX\" data-lpos=\"article|body\">Staff helped residents have video calls with family, doorway conversations, videos and other activities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"article-p___34jbX\" data-lpos=\"article|body\">\u201cWe could see the effects on their mental health: their loneliness, their depression,\u201d King said. \u201cMany times, managers and supervisors would be on the units and observe the emotions on the faces of both residents and staff.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"article-p___34jbX\" data-lpos=\"article|body\">The Ontario Health Coalition has been calling on the province to ensure residents are getting opportunities to go outside.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"article-p___34jbX\" data-lpos=\"article|body\">\u201cIt just cannot go on like this, people are really suffering,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caledonenterprise.com\/news-story\/10378398-will-covid-19-vaccinations-bring-fresh-air-to-some-caledon-seniors-after-months-of-isolation-\/\">Natalie Mehra<\/a>, executive director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caledonenterprise.com\/news-story\/10378398-will-covid-19-vaccinations-bring-fresh-air-to-some-caledon-seniors-after-months-of-isolation-\/\">Ontario Health Coalition<\/a>, who added that in her 25 years of advocacy for seniors, she\u2019s never seen anything like this. \u201cWe\u2019re furious and we\u2019re heartbroken for people in this situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"article-p___34jbX\" data-lpos=\"article|body\">The group held an online news conference to highlight what seniors are facing inside care homes during the pandemic, sharing firsthand stories from residents and families.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-element-responsive___6OVyX\">\n<div id=\"bigbox-2\" class=\"adSlot___3IQ8M\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" data-lpos=\"gamp\" data-testid=\"container\" data-google-query-id=\"COXqo9H98_ACFS4PtwAdkMoB6g\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_58580620\/Caledon_Enterprise\/news_3__container__\">\n<div>\n<p class=\"article-p___34jbX\" data-lpos=\"article|body\">\u201cWe just sit in our rooms, wasting away,\u201d said 83-year-old Alfred Borg, a Newmarket resident.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"article-p___34jbX\" data-lpos=\"article|body\">\u201cThe government has stripped us of our human dignity and our human rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"article-p___34jbX\" data-lpos=\"article|body\">Dr. Amit Arya, a palliative care physician, spoke as well, pointing out that the risk of spreading COVID-19 was lower outside, and many residents had already been vaccinated.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"article-p___34jbX\" data-lpos=\"article|body\">\u201cQuality of life is so important,\u201d he said. \u201cIt can\u2019t just be all about infection control.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"article-p___34jbX\" data-lpos=\"article|body\">At the Abbeyfield home in Caledon, board chair Joe McReynolds says there should be a serious conversation about the future of care following the pandemic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"article-p___34jbX\" data-lpos=\"article|body\">\u201cPersonally, I\u2019d like to see our society move to a much smaller residential system,\u201d he said, explaining that in the Netherlands, there are cluster communities where seniors live together, supporting one another and maintaining autonomy. \u201cI don\u2019t think the current model is the right model.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"article-p___34jbX\" data-lpos=\"article|body\">At Abbeyfield, the home hired a support worker to help residents who were really struggling with loneliness.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"article-p___34jbX\" data-lpos=\"article|body\">\u201cIt definitely varies by individual resident,\u201d McReynolds said, explaining that the most social people have struggled more than others.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"article-p___34jbX\" data-lpos=\"article|body\">He said it all came back to the balance of weighing the needs of an individual against the collective issues at hand.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"article-p___34jbX\" data-lpos=\"article|body\">King says that her home would be looking to welcome visitors on the grounds when provincial restrictions ease.
