I knew that long-term care needed help, but I didn\u2019t realize how tragic and deep-seated the issues are.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">What\u2019s happening in long-term care is appalling. My continuing investigation is confirming what advocacy groups, like the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/seniorguardianangels.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guardian Angels for Seniors Program<\/a><\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.concernedfriends.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Concerned Friends of Ontario Care Facilities<\/a><\/span>, along with many other individuals with family members in these homes, have said \u2014 there are decades-old, systemic failures harming our seniors.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Canadian military\u2019s report confirmed all of this. It outlined\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/ontario-military-ltc-report-1.5585131\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">negligence and depravity<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in the long-term care sector. But it didn\u2019t name Pinecrest Nursing Home specifically \u2014 where nearly half of residents died in a two and a half week span, due to what appears to be hysteria generated by COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In this report, I source the Ontario Science Table\u2019s Science Brief from January 2021 titled, \u201c<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><em><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/covid19-sciencetable.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Science-Brief_Full-Brief_COVID-19-and-Ontarios-Long-Term-Care-Homes_version-1.1_20210126_published.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COVID-19 and Ontario\u2019s Long-Term Care Homes<\/a><\/em><\/span>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">It confirms, \u201cOntario\u2019s long-term care (LTC) home residents have experienced disproportionately high morbidity and mortality, both from COVID-19 and from the conditions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The data show that Canada has the highest proportion of COVID-19 deaths occurring in LTC among the 16 other countries within the organization for economic co-operation and development (OECD). On page 4, in the fine print, that number is revealed as an astonishing 81 per cent!<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Further in the report, on page 17, are details of a curious spike in prescriptions of psychoactive medications prior to the pandemic. The jump in use of antidepressants, trazadone and antipsychotics in long-term care residents cannot be ignored.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Here in Ontario we aren\u2019t getting an inquest, a formal court proceeding like what they\u2019re getting in\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/montreal\/sainte-dorothee-inquest-agicide-1.6075770\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Quebec<\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u2014 we got a\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ltccommission-commissionsld.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Commission Report<\/a><\/span>\u00a0instead. In July 2020, the commissioners said that they \u201cwill be doing this work very quickly.\u201d It\u2019s a massive undertaking to expedite \u2014 so much so that they asked for an extension.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Throughout the report, there are numerous communication issues highlighted. On page 400:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThe commission continues to encounter significant delays in obtaining government information central to the commissions investigation.\u201d In order to meet its obligation, the commission requested all information about the \u201cmeasures taken to prevent, isolate and contain the spread of COVID-19 in the province\u2019s long term care homes before and through the second wave. In light of the ongoing pandemic and the commissions outstanding requests for information,\u201d they asked for an extension to complete the \u201cfinal report on December 31, 2021.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Ford government, including his new Minister of Long-Term Care \u2014 the previously\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/toronto.ctvnews.ca\/rod-phillips-resigns-as-ontario-finance-minister-following-secret-pandemic-getaway-1.5249471\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estranged caucus member Rod Phillips<\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u2014 has pledged to\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/news.ontario.ca\/en\/release\/1000457\/ontario-building-new-and-improved-long-term-care-in-north-bay-and-across-ontario\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">invest $4.9 BILLION<\/a><\/span>\u00a0over four years to hire 27,000 long-term care staff. This, only after former Minister of Long-Term Care Merrilee Fullerton bid her farewells, tooting\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/torontosun.com\/news\/provincial\/levy-fullerton-offers-no-apologies-only-shameless-back-patting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">her own horn while entirely ignoring the system that remains broken<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This is the same government that \u201c<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/torontosun.com\/news\/provincial\/levy-fullerton-offers-no-apologies-only-shameless-back-patting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rammed through Bill 218 in the fall of 2020, a piece of legislation that significantly raises the burden of proof for families attempting to sue LTC homes for alleged negligence.&#8221;<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Advocates like the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ontario Health Coalition<\/a><\/span>\u00a0have critiqued the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fao-on.org\/en\/Blog\/Publications\/2021-ltc-estimates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spending Plan Review of the Ministry of Long-Term Care<\/a><\/span>, published by the Financial Accountability Office of Ontario (FAO). In this\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/release-briefing-note-a-critically-important-warning-in-new-financial-accountability-office-report-ford-governments-long-term-care-plan-is-a-house-of-cards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">release and briefing note<\/a><\/span>, they say that \u201cthe numbers show in detail how the Ford government has made a choice to fund LTC for-profit operators tens of millions of dollars throughout the pandemic that they have taken in dividends (profits) and for executive bonuses, rather than actually improving care, and while leaving the sector without enough funding to meet desperately important public priorities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Is it any surprise that the government is prioritizing the funding of for-profit homes?\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cihi.ca\/en\/long-term-care-homes-in-canada-how-many-and-who-owns-them\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ontario has the most long-term care homes of all the provinces and territories in Canada, with 627 long-term care homes, 57 per cent of which are for profit<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rebelnews.com\/seniors_in_ontarios_long_term_care_homes_suffering_from_decades_old_systemic_failures\">Click here for original article<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(July 12, 2021) By: Tamara Ugolini Since publishing my report on\u00a0Pinecrest Nursing Home in Bobcaygeon, Ont., the response has been overwhelming.
