And the law is very clear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-async=\"\">Outspoken LTC advocate Vivian Stamatopoulos immediately posted Shrybman\u2019s statement\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrVivianS\/status\/1433103245350735872\" data-evt=\"click\" data-evt-typ=\"User Interaction Click\" data-evt-val=\"{&quot;control_fields&quot;: {&quot;mparticle&quot;: {&quot;keys&quot;: {&quot;Click Source Type&quot;: &quot;Click Source Type&quot;, &quot;Click Source Name&quot;: &quot;Click Source Name&quot;, &quot;Click Target URL&quot;: &quot;Click Target URL&quot;}, &quot;mp_event_type&quot;: &quot;Navigation&quot;, &quot;extra_keys&quot;: [&quot;Click Source Vertical Position %&quot;, &quot;Click Source Vertical Position Pixels&quot;]}}, &quot;Click Source Type&quot;: &quot;in-page link&quot;, &quot;Click Source Name&quot;: &quot;to her Twitter account,&quot;, &quot;Click Target URL&quot;: &quot;https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrVivianS\/status\/1433103245350735872&quot;}\">to her Twitter account,<\/a><\/span>\u00a0stating, \u201cThis is cut and dried,\u201d to the Minister of Long Term Care, Rod Phillips.<\/p>\n<p>Orchard Villa is the disgraced long-term care home that saw 206 of 233 residents \u2014 and 100-plus staff \u2014 contract COVID; the home was taken over by the local hospital and the military, and their reports on the conditions at the home are shocking and sickening.<\/p>\n<p>According to allegations in the report, residents were found in soiled diapers and some were severely dehydrated, cockroaches and flies were everywhere, residents were fed while lying down \u2014 allegedly leading to at least one choking death \u2014 and the stench of rotting food in the rooms was evident.<\/p>\n<p>Premier Doug Ford called it \u201cthe most heart-wrenching report I have ever read in my entire life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Ontario government\u2019s response to the crisis in long-term care homes was to pass Bill 218, preventing anyone from suing a home for a COVID exposure-related claim.<\/p>\n<p>Families whose loved ones died in Orchard Villa have been waiting a year for some accountability. There have been no consequences for the suffering and death at the home during COVID.<\/p>\n<p>Orchard Villa is one of 37 properties in Ontario owned by Southbridge Care Homes. It is managed by Extendicare, which runs more than 100 such homes in Canada. Orchard Villa is a for-profit facility.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Southbridge said Orchard Villa was hit early on in the pandemic, \u201cat a time when the global medical and scientific community was still learning about the virus and how it was transmitted,\u201d notwithstanding a timeline that includes military intervention in July 2020 and another COVID outbreak in February 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The statement also said the home had had \u201cchallenges\u201d but had learned from them and \u201cmade changes that are both reflected in the way Orchard Villa currently operates, and in the design of the proposed new home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A redevelopment, \u201cis an important part of infection prevention and control, and a redeveloped Orchard Villa would help provide us with the ability to isolate ventilation and HVAC for each floor in the event it is required,\u201d the statement continues, suggesting that bricks and mortar were the problems during COVID.<\/p>\n<p>Representatives of the Ontario Health Coalition and of the Orchard Villa families spoke last week of how they feel Premier Ford and Minister of Long Term Care Rod Phillips have dodged the situation at the nursing home.<\/p>\n<p>Family members of Orchard Villa residents claim they were not able to have their say at a public hearing held in the summer by The Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.<\/p>\n<p>Being ignored is partly what prompted them to seek a legal opinion on the matter.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/torontosun.com\/news\/local-news\/braun-families-fight-licence-renewal-for-orchard-villa-ltc-home\">Click here for original article<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(September 6, 2021) By: Liz Braun, Toronto Sun Diane Colangelo visits her 86-year-old mother Patricia through a window at the Orchard Villa long-term care home in Pickering.\u00a0PHOTO BY VERONICA HENRI\u00a0\/Toronto Sun\/Postmedia Orchard Villa is the hellhole nursing home in Pickering where 70 residents died of COVID-19.
