any new pandemic measures would be localized and targeted, says throne speech"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(October 4, 2021)<\/p>\n<p>By: Taylor Blewett, Ottawa Citizen<\/p>\n<p><em>The ultimate goal, according to the throne speech delivered in the legislative chamber Monday, is &#8220;avoiding future lockdowns.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/smartcdn.prod.postmedia.digital\/ottawacitizen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/1334562731.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=288\" alt=\"File photo\/ Proof of vaccination required to enter a restaurant.\" width=\"419\" height=\"316\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #999999;\"><span class=\"caption\">File photo\/ Proof of vaccination required to enter a restaurant.<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"credit\">PHOTO BY MARIO TAMA<\/span>\u00a0\/<span class=\"distributor\">Getty Images<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ontario MPPs are back at Queen\u2019s Park, the province is heading into a winter when COVID-19 case counts may rise, and the ultimate goal, according to the throne speech delivered in the legislative chamber Monday, is \u201cavoiding future lockdowns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A new provincial parliamentary session began Monday, after the governing Progressive Conservatives decided last month to prorogue the legislature until the federal election had concluded, allowing them to plan their fall legislation based on the results.<\/p>\n<p>Monday\u2019s speech from the throne, which lays out government goals as the new session begins, was largely pandemic-focused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf additional public health measures are needed, they will be localized and targeted,\u201d the speech pledged.\u00a0\u201cAt the advice of the Chief Medical Officer of Health, they will seek to minimize disruptions to businesses and families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The speech also said the government will introduce legislation this fall to protect long-term care residents \u201cthrough better accountability, enforcement and transparency,\u201d warning that \u201cthe days when bad actors could get away with anything less than quality care for our most vulnerable will be over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Ontario Health Coalition, meanwhile, had organized a series of protests across the province Monday to coincide with the return of the legislature, demanding action to better care for those living in LTC homes.<\/p>\n<p>As for the fiscal challenges facing the province as the pandemic\u2019s two-year anniversary approaches, the throne speech said the government \u201cremains steadfast in its commitment to an economic and fiscal recovery that is fuelled by economic growth, not painful tax hikes or spending cuts,\u201d outlining intentions to build road and transit infrastructure, and \u201cbuild an economy that makes Ontario the best place in the world to do business, work and raise a family \u2013 no matter where you live in the province.\u201d<\/p>\n<section class=\"article-content__content-group\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/ottawacitizen.com\/news\/local-news\/covid-19-any-new-pandemic-measures-would-be-localized-and-targeted-says-throne-speech\">Click here for original article<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(October 4, 2021) By: Taylor Blewett, Ottawa Citizen The ultimate goal, according to the throne speech delivered in the legislative chamber Monday, is &#8220;avoiding future lockdowns.&#8221;
