As in the past, many big names and events failed to make the cut due to stiff competition, especially among the losers.<\/p>\n<p>First, the winners, in no particular order:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/vaxhunterstwitter.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18298 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/vaxhunterstwitter-300x254.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/vaxhunterstwitter-300x254.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/vaxhunterstwitter-768x651.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/vaxhunterstwitter.jpeg 968w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/opinion\/star-columnists\/2021\/12\/15\/top-10-winners-and-losers-of-2021.html\">Vaccine Hunters Canada:<\/a>\u00a0This grassroots group, founded by web developer Andrew Young, 33, operates a website that aggregates all available COVID-19 vaccine appointments in the country to help people find vaccines in their communities. Since\u00a0vaccinehunters.ca. was launched in March 2021, it has gained some 500,000 followers on social media and connected more than 1.2 million people to vaccine appointments.<\/p>\n<p>2. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/opinion\/star-columnists\/2021\/12\/15\/top-10-winners-and-losers-of-2021.html\">The two Michaels:<\/a>\u00a0Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig were freed after being arbitrarily detained for more than 1,000 days in separate Chinese prisons. The release of the men came just hours after U.S. prosecutors agreed to drop charges against Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou, who was being held in Vancouver.<\/p>\n<p>3. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/opinion\/star-columnists\/2021\/12\/15\/top-10-winners-and-losers-of-2021.html\">Mary Simon:<\/a>\u00a0This former diplomat and Inuit rights advocate became the first Indigenous person to be appointed Governor General. (See Julie Payette in the Losers category).<\/p>\n<p>4. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/opinion\/star-columnists\/2021\/12\/15\/top-10-winners-and-losers-of-2021.html\">Damian Warner:<\/a>\u00a0This London athlete won the Olympic decathlon gold medal, earning the unofficial title of \u201cthe world\u2019s greatest athlete.\u201d He also was awarded the Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada\u2019s athlete of year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/jyoti_gondek.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18299 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/jyoti_gondek-300x223.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>5. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/opinion\/star-columnists\/2021\/12\/15\/top-10-winners-and-losers-of-2021.html\">Jyoti Gondek:<\/a>\u00a0This popular city councillor was elected Calgary\u2019s first female mayor after defeating 26 challengers in an October election to replace outgoing mayor Naheed Nenshi.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/beaver1.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18300 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/beaver1-225x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/beaver1-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/beaver1.jpeg 605w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>6. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/opinion\/star-columnists\/2021\/12\/15\/top-10-winners-and-losers-of-2021.html\">Rascal, the Royal York beaver:<\/a>\u00a0This commuting beaver walked into the Royal York subway station in Toronto and was eventually removed safely from the platform after being described as \u201cin distress\u201d \u2014 possibly from waiting so long for the next train.<\/p>\n<p>7. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/opinion\/star-columnists\/2021\/12\/15\/top-10-winners-and-losers-of-2021.html\">Omar Alghabra:<\/a>\u00a0The federal transportation minister displayed grace and calm after being despicably smeared by Bloc Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois leader Yves-Fran\u00e7ois Blanchet with an unfounded insinuation that the respected Mississauga Centre MP is a Muslim radical.<\/p>\n<p>8. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/opinion\/star-columnists\/2021\/12\/15\/top-10-winners-and-losers-of-2021.html\">Andrew Boozary and Natalie Mehra:<\/a>\u00a0This executive director of social medicine at Toronto\u2019s University Health Network and this executive director of the Ontario Health Coalition both played critical \u2014 and unheralded \u2014 roles during the COVID-19 crisis in pushing for measures to address health inequities exacerbated by the pandemic and in highlighting continuing problems in long-term-care facilities.<\/p>\n<p>9. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/opinion\/star-columnists\/2021\/12\/15\/top-10-winners-and-losers-of-2021.html\">Tobias L\u00fctke and Fiona McKean:<\/a>\u00a0This Shopify CEO and his wife donated $2 million to each of Canada\u2019s 13 acute care children\u2019s hospitals, for a total of $26 million.<\/p>\n<p>10. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/opinion\/star-columnists\/2021\/12\/15\/top-10-winners-and-losers-of-2021.html\">Justin Trudeau:<\/a>\u00a0Despite heavy criticism for calling an election that his critics insisted \u201cnobody wanted,\u201d the Liberal leader won a third consecutive term as prime minister in a vote whose outcome was almost identical to the 2019 election.<\/p>\n<p>And the losers:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/ryerson_statue.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18301 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/ryerson_statue-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/ryerson_statue-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/ryerson_statue-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/ryerson_statue.jpeg 850w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>1. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/opinion\/star-columnists\/2021\/12\/15\/top-10-winners-and-losers-of-2021.html\">Egerton Ryerson:<\/a>\u00a0His name was dropped by Ryerson University and his statue was toppled by protesters in the wake of the discovery of mass graves of Indigenous children at several residential schools. Long called the father of public education in Ontario, Ryerson is now considered by critics as one of the architects of the disgraced residential school system.<\/p>\n<p>2. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/opinion\/star-columnists\/2021\/12\/15\/top-10-winners-and-losers-of-2021.html\">Julie Payette:<\/a>\u00a0This former astronaut became the first Canadian governor general to resign after an independent review of Rideau Hall found she presided over a toxic work environment, including yelling, screaming and public humiliations toward her staff.<\/p>\n<p>3. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/opinion\/star-columnists\/2021\/12\/15\/top-10-winners-and-losers-of-2021.html\">Henry Hildebrandt:<\/a>\u00a0This firebrand pastor of the Church of God Restoration in Aylmer, Ont., is one of Canada\u2019s most controversial anti-vax crusaders, leading huge (and sometimes illegal) anti-lockdown rallies at home and across the country.<\/p>\n<p>4. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/opinion\/star-columnists\/2021\/12\/15\/top-10-winners-and-losers-of-2021.html\">Anti-vax protesters:<\/a>\u00a0These noisy demonstrators are now staging despicable rallies at clinics where children as young as 5 are entering to get their COVID vaccinations.<\/p>\n<p>5. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/opinion\/star-columnists\/2021\/12\/15\/top-10-winners-and-losers-of-2021.html\">William Amos:<\/a>\u00a0This Liberal MP from Quebec was caught twice \u2014 not just once \u2014 exposing himself during virtual proceeding of the House of Commons. He later entered a \u201cwellness program\u201d to work \u201cwith a health team to address stress and time management challenges.\u201d It was no surprise when he didn\u2019t seek re-election.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/bc_wildfire.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18302 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/bc_wildfire-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/bc_wildfire-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/bc_wildfire-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/bc_wildfire.jpeg 850w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>6. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/opinion\/star-columnists\/2021\/12\/15\/top-10-winners-and-losers-of-2021.html\">B.C. residents:<\/a>\u00a0It was an environmental disaster on the West Coast, first with a prolonged stretch of record-setting heat; then with massive wildfires, including one that destroyed the entire town of Lytton; and finally with historic rainfall that caused widespread flooding, evacuations and deadly mudslides.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/b_c_flooding.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18303 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/b_c_flooding-300x191.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/b_c_flooding-300x191.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/b_c_flooding-768x488.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/b_c_flooding.jpeg 968w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>7. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/opinion\/star-columnists\/2021\/12\/15\/top-10-winners-and-losers-of-2021.html\">Laurentian University:<\/a>\u00a0The Sudbury-based school became the first major Canadian university to file for creditor protection after suffering a financial meltdown that brought it to the brink of being unable to pay its staff. The university is now refusing to turn over key financial records to an Ontario legislative committee.<\/p>\n<p>8. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/opinion\/star-columnists\/2021\/12\/15\/top-10-winners-and-losers-of-2021.html\">Maple Syrup:<\/a>\u00a0Strange, but true, the Quebec Maple Syrup Producers group was forced to release a whopping 22.7 million kilograms of the \u201cliquid gold\u201d from its strategic reserves because of shortages caused by surging world demand and lower production.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/annamie_paul.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18304 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/annamie_paul-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/annamie_paul-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/annamie_paul-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/annamie_paul.jpeg 850w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>9. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/opinion\/star-columnists\/2021\/12\/15\/top-10-winners-and-losers-of-2021.html\">Green Party:<\/a>\u00a0This political party is on the verge of bankruptcy after a disastrous election outcome, a collapse of donations, layoffs of headquarter employees and lawsuits between the party and Annamie Paul, who resigned as leader, calling it \u201cthe worst period\u201d in her life.<\/p>\n<p>10. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/opinion\/star-columnists\/2021\/12\/15\/top-10-winners-and-losers-of-2021.html\">Jason Kenney and Scott Moe:<\/a>\u00a0These once popular premiers of Alberta and Saskatchewan respectively, who both took a cavalier attitude toward imposing COVID-19 restrictions, are now facing major unrest among voters over their mishandling of the health crisis, with polls showing Kenney\u2019s party leadership on \u201clife support\u201d and serious doubts growing about Moe\u2019s competency.<\/p>\n<p>Link to original article:\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/opinion\/star-columnists\/2021\/12\/15\/top-10-winners-and-losers-of-2021.html\">https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/opinion\/star-columnists\/2021\/12\/15\/top-10-winners-and-losers-of-2021.html<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the 14th year, Bob Hepburn reveals the winners and losers from across Canada, Ontario and the Toronto area.
