{"id":18829,"date":"2022-02-17T16:10:14","date_gmt":"2022-02-17T21:10:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/?p=18829"},"modified":"2022-04-02T16:12:41","modified_gmt":"2022-04-02T20:12:41","slug":"trillium-health-receives-largest-ever-charitable-gift-to-a-hospital","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/trillium-health-receives-largest-ever-charitable-gift-to-a-hospital\/","title":{"rendered":"Trillium Health receives largest-ever charitable gift to a hospital"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(Feb. 15, 2022)<\/p>\n<p>By: Ben Cohen, Toronto Star<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/images.thestar.com\/jKwwSJSqqdX7yqBTTem006sxIfA=\/1086x611\/smart\/filters:cb(1644986339716)\/https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/content\/dam\/thestar\/news\/gta\/2022\/02\/15\/trillium-health-receives-largest-ever-charitable-gift-to-a-hospital\/the_peter_gilgan_mississauga_hospital_rendering.jpg\" alt=\"The planned Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital, shown in an artist\u2019s rendering, will be the largest hospital in Canada once it\u2019s completed in 2025.\" width=\"395\" height=\"222\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-block-container speakable-text-block-container\">Mississauga will become home to one of the largest hospitals in Canada in 2025, thanks, in part, to a historic multimillion-dollar charitable gift.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-block-container speakable-text-block-container\">The $105 million donation from the\u00a0<a class=\"text-block__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/gta\/2019\/06\/03\/sick-kids-gets-100-million-donation-from-canadian-billionaire-peter-gilgan.html\">Peter\u202fGilgan\u202fFoundation\u00a0<\/a>\u2014 the largest charitable gift to a hospital in Canadian history \u2014 will allow Trillium Health Partners to improve two of its three sites, Mississauga Hospital and Queensway Health Centre, with the former set to be demolished and rebuilt and the latter having a new facility added to its grounds. These developments are also part of a 10-year, $30.2 billion investment in Ontario hospitals by the provincial government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-block-container\">The new Mississauga Hospital, which begins construction in 2025, will be almost triple the size of its predecessor and will have the most beds of any single hospital building in the country.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>It\u2019s planned to stand 24 storeys on the Queensway West site in Mississauga and cover approximately 2.8 million square feet. It will provide over 950 hospital beds, an increase of more than 200, and have 23 operating rooms, up from 14. The hospital will also have a larger emergency department \u2014 projected to be one of the largest in the province.<\/p>\n<p>Demolition of the old hospital won\u2019t happen until the new one is completed. All Trillium\u2019s sites will operate as usual during construction. A spokesperson for the hospital said while the overall costs of the project will only be released once a developer is found, it will be a \u201cmultibillion-dollar project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/images.thestar.com\/S4rNJOOnAG57MjcSe0HwZF9ckDY=\/850x496\/smart\/filters:cb(1644986273353)\/https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/content\/dam\/thestar\/news\/gta\/2022\/02\/15\/trillium-health-receives-largest-ever-charitable-gift-to-a-hospital\/the_gilgan_family_queensway_health_centre_rendering.jpg\" alt=\"The Gilgan Family Queensway Health Centre, now called the Queensway Health Centre, is shown in an artist\u2019s rendering. The expansion of the hospital is set to be completed in 2024 through a donation from the Peter Gilgan Foundation.\" width=\"378\" height=\"221\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Queensway Health Centre, located on Sherway Drive in Etobicoke, will have a new nine-storey building constructed in 2024, which will serve as a dedicated centre for complex care and rehabilitation. There will be space for over 350 beds there, and all rooms will be private.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-block-container\">Expanding hospital capacity in Ontario is crucial, as the province has fewer hospital beds per capita than any other in Canada and some of the \u201cmost overcrowded hospitals in the developed world,\u201d according to the Ontario Health Coalition, a non-profit health-care advocacy network.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-block-container\">It\u2019s especially important in Peel and Etobicoke. Accounting for projected population growth over the next 20 years,\u00a0<a class=\"text-block__link\" href=\"https:\/\/news.ontario.ca\/en\/release\/1001254\/ontario-investing-billions-to-modernize-and-expand-trillium-health-hospitals\">Ontario expects\u00a0<\/a>the need for health-care services provided by Trillium Health Partners will increase seven times more than that of the average Ontario hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Karli Farrow, president and CEO of Trillium Health Partners, said she and her colleagues at the hospital felt \u201celated, thrilled and like the future is ours and very bright\u201d when they heard the Peter\u202fGilgan\u202fFoundation\u2019s donation. Gilgan is a billionaire philanthropist and founder of Canada\u2019s largest residential home builder, Mattamy Homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-block-container\">In his honour, Trillium will name its new hospital the Peter Gilgan\u202fMississauga Hospital and rename Queensway Health Centre, the Gilgan Family\u202fQueensway Health Centre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-block-container\">Prior to the donation, Farrow said she and other Trillium executives described to Peter Gilgan their need to \u201cchange health care overall\u201d with the new hospital and create a \u201ccomplete and inclusive system of care.\u201d She said that means greater community outreach, extending health-care services beyond hospital doors and achieving new ways to allow patients to remain home during care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-block-container\">Farrow said her vision for Trillium was always to have it connect more with the surrounding community. The pandemic proved to her just how necessary that is.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-block-container\">\u201cWhat we learned in the pandemic is that the hospital has to extend its resources out to be there for the community,\u201d said Farrow. \u201cWe had to think about not just who comes to the hospital, but how we can get out into the neighbourhoods that need us most.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-block-container\">Trillium was one of the hardest-hit hospitals in Ontario in terms of the volume of\u00a0<a class=\"text-block__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/coronavirus.html\">COVID-19<\/a>\u00a0patients it received, Farrow said. It took care of over 4,000 people hospitalized for COVID throughout the pandemic, or about a tenth of all COVID hospitalizations in the province.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-block-container\">The hospital also vaccinated over 500,000 people and continues to operate a mobile vaccination centre, which goes into neighbourhoods with lower vaccination rates.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-related-inline\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"text-block-container\">Luke Gilgan, operational manager of his father Peter\u2019s foundation, said the donation was made because the foundation recognized Trillium\u2019s need to grow alongside the region it serves. On a personal level, it\u2019s deeply rewarding to be able to assist with that, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-block-container\">\u201cTo be in a position where we can do something of significance, that we know will have a huge impact on health care for many decades to come, is humbling and gratifying,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-block-container\">In 2018, Kevin Singh was brought back from the brink of death by Trillium hospital staff after cardiac arrest.
