It\u2019s not about a vision of possibilities \u2013 as we come closer to a confluence of disasters. We know that platforms have a sell-by date of June 2.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c7\"><span class=\"c2\">But could ever do with a grasp of the future that extends a bit beyond that sell-by date.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c7\"><span class=\"c2\">Of all 4 provincial leaders participating in Monday night\u2019s debate, sadly, only Green Party Leader, Mike Schreiner had the guts to seize it \u2013 rising hate, white supremacy and of course the reason his party exists \u2013 the climate crisis. If there was only one remark to set him aside from the\u00a0Liberals,\u00a0the NDP and \u2013 naturally \u2013 the Tories it was: \u201cI won\u2019t raise taxes on low and middle income folks. Yeah, I\u2019m going to ask wealthier people in this province to pay a bit more so we can have the funds to fix the foundations and so we can prepare for the next crisis \u2013 which is the climate crisis.\u201d With that the Greens moved to the left of the NDP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c7\"><span class=\"c19\">There were claims made through the 1 \u00bd hour debate \u2013 some verifiable some not so much. Here are few of them with\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c30\">School\u2019s<\/span><span class=\"c2\">\u00a0comments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c7\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/W7hnitpy9exhbJAoTbDyjnAy67UTFkMIVWaKhEOIngQu60QynUx995aIzR9EZN5niD_h33SAMg_5SieoiMFWSUjYNyIlCYYCy6e5QIXfY7I_t_NeW0uPVpsiKOo0NzTaEKj3uYdm3s6coOoONA\" alt=\"A group of children holding books\n\nDescription automatically generated with low confidence\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"c16\"><span class=\"c30 c41\">Jobs<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"c5\"><span class=\"c2\">It must have been printed in black magic marker throughout his reminder binder, because PC leader Doug Ford mentioned it time and again:\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c21\">\u201cUnder the previous government we had lost 300 000 jobs<\/span><span class=\"c2\">\u201d A little context here.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c11\"><a class=\"c17\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/munkschool.utoronto.ca\/mowatcentre\/how-ontario-lost-300000-manufacturing-jobs\/&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1654833607859158&amp;usg=AOvVaw1ids58AE9gMHKHsVvF3k2j\">Loss of 300 000 jobs t<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c2\">hrough automation, cheap offshore wages, lower tariffs and so on, was an issue back in 2014. In 2019 Ontario\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c11\"><a class=\"c17\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/thereview.ca\/2019\/11\/08\/24200-ontario-jobs-lost-in-october\/&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1654833607859590&amp;usg=AOvVaw0GsiAR7Wvr7Y7pWqNLRGqb\">lost another 24 200 jobs<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c2\">\u00a0mostly in manufacturing and health care. This wasn\u2019t helped by the cuts the Tories were making to the latter sector. According to\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c11\"><a class=\"c17\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.bnnbloomberg.ca\/ontario-loses-355-000-jobs-in-2020-single-largest-decline-on-record-watchdog-1.1565410&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1654833607860072&amp;usg=AOvVaw0JRHx8e4875WYPxoN4m6Yp\">Bloomberg<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c2\">, Ontario lost 355 000 jobs in 2020 due to COVID-19. Mr. Ford later said that \u201cWe have 550 000 jobs in the economy.\u201d He just didn\u2019t say where.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"c16\"><span class=\"c30 c41\">Supports for people in need<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"c5\"><span class=\"c2\">While Doug Ford was touting the removal of license plate fees and lowering gas taxes, Mike Schreiner pointed out the obvious: \u201cIt doesn\u2019t do anything for a family that can\u2019t afford a car \u2013 the type of family that might be on the Ontario Disability Support Programme (ODSP) or Ontario Works whose rates have been frozen since the election of the Ford government. The Tories promised a\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c11\"><a class=\"c17\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/ontario-elxn-disability-payments-1.6446744&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1654833607860797&amp;usg=AOvVaw0G9A_J4_PDwq5dKXX7pHax\">timely increase in the $1 169 ODSP<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c2\">\u00a0payment by 5% on the eve of the election call.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c5\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/P7XAx9wuvdgCXVSEeUjsbI9vToLaMYifRV8ILkoQCLSV8d0mAxkwMv9o69JL-U9Hx421Y3RGBBc565SrPxbC50MgK2pne8ihWpk6i-AA1gxiZydUmCejVFgMbgfl2z6tbbCn0SO2-eSXtw-txQ\" alt=\"A group of people looking at a computer\n\nDescription automatically generated\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"c16\"><span class=\"c30 c41\">Highway 413<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"c5\"><span class=\"c2\">The $10 billion proposed highway will run in a broad curve from the 401 near Mississauga to the 400 just north of\u00a0Vaughn would cut through the Green Belt and eat up 2000 acres of farmland as it crosses 85 waterways and disrupts 220 wetlands, Liberal leader Stephen Del Duca mentioned that the highway is \u201cactually going to make some of his richest political donors richer.\u201d That\u2019s true. According to\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c11\"><a class=\"c17\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/investigations\/2021\/04\/03\/ford-friends-with-benefits-an-inside-look-at-the-money-power-and-influence-behind-the-push-to-build-highway-413.html&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1654833607861889&amp;usg=AOvVaw18RltcS6T7ZfBvU9wToV3Q\">an April 2021 Star article<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c2\">, one of the developers John Di Poce employed the main Ontario PC fundraiser while three others gave a government lobbying job to Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney\u2019s leadership campaign chair.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"c16\"><span class=\"c30 c41\">Healthcare<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"c5\"><span class=\"c2\">The Tories love privatization and there\u2019s no time like a surgery backlog caused by the pandemic to push it along. Liberal leader, Stephen Del Duca said\u00a0 PC Health Minister Christine Elliott announced the government would relieve \u201c the surgical and diagnostic backlog\u2026by inviting the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c11\"><a class=\"c17\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/group-raises-alarm-over-elliotts-private-hospitals-comment\/&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1654833607862806&amp;usg=AOvVaw3qS6eN19ojX4E2TL3XHSor\">private sector, private hospitals<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c2\">\u2026\u201d\u00a0 to help clear it up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c5\"><span class=\"c2\">This isn\u2019t to let the Liberals off the hook. NDP leader Andrea Horwath agreed with Doug Ford\u2019s contention that health care is in a mess \u201cbecause of years if squeezing by the Liberal government.\u201d The\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c11\"><a class=\"c17\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/wynnes-health-care-plan-is-perpetual-crisis\/&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1654833607863359&amp;usg=AOvVaw3k4KUnn3uph3o39670FyEX\">Ontario Health Coalition (OHC)<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c2\">\u00a0explains that while former PC premier Mike \u201cthe knife\u201d Harris was bad for the province\u2019s health, years of Liberal cuts created a permanent crisis in health-care funding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c5\"><span class=\"c2\">Mr. Ford promised that his government would spend $40 billion on hospitals over the next 10 years. This came from the last-minute budget a few weeks ago and when you hold it up in the light of so many of his government\u2019s own health-care cuts, it\u2019s not believable.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c11\"><a class=\"c17\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ontariohealth\/posts\/quick-list-of-fords-health-care-cutshere-is-a-list-of-the-doug-ford-conservative\/2286830791581409\/&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1654833607863975&amp;usg=AOvVaw0PKDZ6B_1OC63YtOUuvpCj\">For example<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c2\">, he cut mental health funding by over $330 million, set public hospital funding at less than the rate of inflation, set up a plan \u2013 later delayed \u2013 to cut public health funding to Toronto and cut funding to the College of Midwives. His government passed Bill 124 which limited public sector wages to 1% per year. This was harsh treatment for the province\u2019s nurses and healthcare workers risking their lives through COVID-19. The other three parties at the debate said they would repeal the law- but not Doug Ford.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c5\"><span class=\"c2\">Then there\u2019s the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c11\"><a class=\"c17\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/opinion\/star-columnists\/2020\/10\/22\/doug-fords-government-is-making-it-almost-impossible-to-sue-long-term-care-homes-good-thing-hes-protecting-covid-victims-families.html&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1654833607864551&amp;usg=AOvVaw09VHfo5ndHP4M0A7ocOsDE\">crisis of long-term care during the pandemic<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c2\">\u00a0and his government\u2019s effort to shield homes from negligence lawsuits through Bill 128. Fifty-eight percent of these homes are for-profit and Tories like former Premier Mike Harris are connected to them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c5\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/GL7oTBpqVKOt1Mp8GmqySKPbR8bc02X_mN67c4-hs2adD3eO6IUMJXAqd9xcVXlnZLOjSVjxu8hkJjjXASyGgtioToZzPLRh_bndxdy7nXl55ixnpEWh2k0JJoh8xGvEQJzjzkUFnzObWRkIaQ\" alt=\"A person smiling at the camera\n\nDescription automatically generated with low confidence\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"c16\"><span class=\"c30 c41\">Education<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"c5\"><span class=\"c2\">For Doug Ford, education is about preparing young people for the job market; heavens knows he brought it up often enough throughout the debate. If that means continuing mandatory e-learning after the disaster of online learning throughout the pandemic \u2013 so be it.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c11\"><a class=\"c17\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/fao-education-report-1.5298033&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1654833607865620&amp;usg=AOvVaw0_Qj3NY3NdMUvj3lxdNH-9\">If it means cutting teachers as you increase class sizes<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c2\">, that must mean getting the biggest bang for the buck.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c5\"><span class=\"c2\">But, you just can\u2019t let it go when Mr. Ford said the province is investing $14 billion dollars in building and improving schools- that\u2019s over ten years. With a repair backlog of $16.8 billion dollars and growing, Education Minister Stephen Lecce announced less than a month ago that the government will\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c11\"><a class=\"c17\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/ontario-schools-announcement-1.6426123&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1654833607866143&amp;usg=AOvVaw06LBgcH_nNOmhBBOlUG4Fq\">spend $500 million next year<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c2\">\u00a0on school repair and replacement. At that rate schools might be back to where they were in about 34 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c5\"><span class=\"c2\">It makes for exciting television when the premier, as Andrea Horwath remarked, \u201cis making stuff up.\u201d So, when he had the gall to say that \u201cthe Liberals and the NDP closed 600 schools across the province,\u201d it\u2019s at least worth pointing out that the two parties weren\u2019t in some kind of coalition government over the years- and that the Liberal government of the time actually closed 333 school by 2017 \u2013 replacing them with 57 new ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c5\"><span class=\"c2\">The Tories\u2019 election budget shows\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c11\"><a class=\"c17\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/pressprogress.ca\/doug-fords-budget-includes-a-hidden-1-3-billion-decrease-in-education-funding\/&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1654833607866796&amp;usg=AOvVaw0Q3F4ibatrUYK1MMsiLfFM\">$29.5 billion for education<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c2\">\u00a0in 2022-23. This, according to Stephen Del Duca, is a drop of $1.3 billion compared to the province\u2019s third quarter projection of $31.56 billion. But that amount includes a temporary COVID top up of $760 million. So the cut to education is more like $540 million, closer to the amount predicted by Randy Robinson of Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) who noted that Education would be shorted by $500 million. Either way you look at it, Tories are not friends of education. For more on that, take a look at\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c11\"><a class=\"c17\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/educationactiontoronto.com\/articles\/fordwatch-education-an-election-tool-for-the-people-to-take-on-the-tories\/&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1654833607867322&amp;usg=AOvVaw2QoEaMSmlXfbGyRLoT6CQD\">Fordwatch:Education<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"c16\"><span class=\"c30 c41\">Anti-hate<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"c5\"><span class=\"c2\">Doug Ford called his slave auctioneer Education Minister the best we\u2019ve ever had, so it\u2019s hard to take seriously anything he has to say about anti-racism. Andrea Horwath noted that his government\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c11\"><a class=\"c17\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/kitchener-waterloo\/anti-racism-directorate-cuts-lindo-tibollo-1.4827091&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1654833607868124&amp;usg=AOvVaw1I2DPXKfrSPDK8dxshgQv-\">cut funds to the anti-racism directorate<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c2\">. All three other party members asked why Mr. Ford didn\u2019t support\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c11\"><a class=\"c17\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/london.ctvnews.ca\/premier-noncommittal-about-supporting-ndp-s-our-london-family-act-to-combat-islamophobia-1.5797368&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1654833607868648&amp;usg=AOvVaw1A3N8hiQvxbAekbd_qxkvx\">Our London Families Act<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c2\">\u00a0\u2013 the anti-Islamophobia legislation introduced by the NDP in response to the targeted killing of 4 members of the Afzaal family in London. Mike Schreiner called white supremacy and hate two of the largest challenges in Ontario and asked him directly to support the act. Mr. Ford said he\u2019d spend money on safety outside mosques and similar gathering places \u2013 but left the question in the air.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c5\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/KFkbbB0CV6xAsdKYl_Ln-y-822O_V6gIwzWCEoCfUAh-KdzR5M35jhNFkQ289obIDlzmYYWLJaDamXPws1CAHLBPDxv4PXLHmbB5RA5amkLOlCmvUzAoCQ7tmx13cXpUaUapFHF1brctiryj4w\" alt=\"A person with green paint on the face\n\nDescription automatically generated with medium confidence\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"c16\"><span class=\"c21\">Climate<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"c5\"><span class=\"c2\">The Premier said that Ontario is attracting $14 billion to produce electric vehicles. It would have been great to hear where it\u2019s coming from, since there is no mention about that sort of money to be invested in any recent articles on the topic. Mr. Ford\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c11\"><a class=\"c17\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/news.ontario.ca\/en\/release\/1001828\/ontario-secures-largest-auto-investment-in-provinces-history&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1654833607869706&amp;usg=AOvVaw3a1YPk9t3ufou_rhlrBfL0\">own office says<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c2\">\u00a0that a joint venture is putting $5 billion into a facility in Windsor.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c11\"><a class=\"c17\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.investontario.ca\/spotlights\/5-reasons-ontario-poised-lead-future-electric-vehicle-production&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1654833607870011&amp;usg=AOvVaw0Q7Ai7Mq-8EsP-O0Ij1XrG\">Another government website<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c2\">\u00a0lists another $2.8 billion coming from Ford and General Motors. The\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c11\"><a class=\"c17\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/financialpost.com\/commodities\/energy\/electric-vehicles\/ontario-risks-losing-its-auto-crown-as-cheap-green-power-gives-quebec-the-ev-edge&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1654833607870343&amp;usg=AOvVaw0xqicO7jZcTT0yiGfj0WpQ\">Financial Post warns<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c2\">\u00a0that Ontario faces stiff competition from Quebec with that province\u2019s cheaper, cleaner energy from Hydro Quebec.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c5\"><span class=\"c2\">Doug Ford\u2019s Tories, to put it mildly, have a credibility problem as far as a greener future is concerned. As Mike Schreiner mentioned time and again, Highway 413 is the opposite direction the province should be taking. The Green Party leader noted the environmental protections the government stifled like ordering\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c11\"><a class=\"c17\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/thenarwhal.ca\/doug-ford-ontario-environment-explainer\/&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1654833607870695&amp;usg=AOvVaw2x-s-z3GCAt6cEKfSHlOe6\">Ontario\u2019s conservation authorities<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c2\">\u00a0to wind down. As the Tories crank up gas plants, Mr. Schreiner says, emissions will skyrocket 300 percent. According to a\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c11\"><a class=\"c17\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/business\/2022\/05\/09\/ontario-energy-grid-emissions-set-to-skyrocket-400-as-ford-government-forced-to-crank-up-the-gas.html&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1654833607870983&amp;usg=AOvVaw1Fs7GBfWpgj3NfOAWoeMFP\">recent Toronto Star article,<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c2\">\u00a0that number could be 400 percent. Andrea Horwath reminded those listening, that the Ford government\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c11\"><a class=\"c17\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/toronto.ctvnews.ca\/ontario-putting-91m-toward-electric-vehicle-chargers-at-rest-stops-parks-1.5830735%23:~:text%3DIt%2520comes%2520more%2520than%2520three,wiring%2520for%2520potential%2520EV%2520chargers.&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1654833607871318&amp;usg=AOvVaw1IXn31M4OYE1roqGP2Cdy7\">stopped funding EV charging stations<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c2\">\u00a03 years ago as well as\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c11\"><a class=\"c17\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/6199860\/doug-ford-proud-cancelling-hundreds-green-energy-contracts\/&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1654833607871608&amp;usg=AOvVaw1BXBQgX-m4_okNnhRl5uMu\">tearing up green energy contracts<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c2\">.
