Photo by Penny Cadue.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"c6\"><span class=\"c2\">Last night, in the first and only official provincial leaders\u2019 debate, Ontarians had an opportunity to hear from the four major party leaders ahead of next month\u2019s election. The 90-minute affair touched on a number of topics, including the state of health care in Ontario, with the leaders sparring on issues ranging from hospital wait times to the government\u2019s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c5\"><span class=\"c2\">While health care featured prominently in the single televised debate, Matthew Gventer of the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c11\"><a class=\"c17\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/KingstonHealthCoalition\/&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1654833607873021&amp;usg=AOvVaw2S88i2PSdQWOs8AddRaVfV\">Kingston Health Coalition<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c2\">\u00a0said that the leaders failed to break through with meaningful criticism and solutions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c6\"><span class=\"c2\">\u201cWhat I found was they let the government off the hook in many ways about the real impact and strategies of the government, especially privatization,\u201d said Gventer. \u201cThey missed some of the most drastic realities for workers and the patients in terms of, for example, home care, and it\u2019s the privatization that\u2019s generated a culture of profit first.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c6\"><span class=\"c2\">For Gventer, the issue of privatization in health care is one of the key aspects of this provincial campaign, the urgency of which, he argued, was not properly reflected in last night\u2019s debate.\u00a0\u201cIt didn\u2019t come across \u2026 [we weren\u2019t shown] the extent [of the] dangers of the privatization that\u2019s going on in a number of areas.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c6\"><span class=\"c2\">\u201cI mean, [Doug Ford\u2019s] main thing was, \u2018We\u2019re open for business. We\u2019re building. We\u2019re creating jobs.\u2019 That was what he said about health care, essentially: that when we\u2019re building new buildings, we\u2019re open for business. For business, in healthcare \u2014 [that means] privatizing health care. So, it was a cover-up, and I think that was a failure of the opposition,\u201d Gventer said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c5\"><span class=\"c2\">The Ford government has recently come under fire for its plans to increase for-profit health care in the province, with the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c11\"><a class=\"c17\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2022\/03\/21\/2406750\/0\/en\/Ford-government-plans-unprecedented-for-profit-privatization-of-health-care-Health-Coalitions-across-the-province-hold-summits-to-fight-privatization-and-protect-public-health-care.html%23:~:text%3DTORONTO%252C%2520March%252021%252C%25202022%2520(,clinics%2520and%2520hospitals%2520in%2520Ontario.&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1654833607873699&amp;usg=AOvVaw0IjGUbuEVJH7WzqMubpXpN\">Ontario Health Coalition<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c2\">indicating that Ontario is set to expand for-profit facilities across Ontario, unloading some of its responsibilities onto private health corporations. While Gventer acknowledges that most opposition parties are putting forward plans to stop increased privatization, such promises were notably absent from the debate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c6\"><span class=\"c2\">\u201cAll the [opposition] parties\u2019 platforms are reflecting a turn away from for-profit health care, [yet] somehow, that did not play out; it did not show up in a meaningful, caring way,\u201d he reflected on the debate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c6\"><span class=\"c2\">Privatization certainly was touched upon, with the three opposition parties criticizing the Progressive Conservatives\u2019 turn towards for-profit medicine. In his opening remarks on health care, Ontario Liberal Leader Steven Del Duca criticized the PCs\u2019 plan to rely on for-profit clinics to help solve the province\u2019s current surgical backlog. \u201cI was shocked back in February when Doug Ford\u2019s hand-picked Health Minister said that his government would actually relieve the surgical and diagnostic backlog \u2026 by inviting the private sector, private hospitals,\u201d Del Duca said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c6\"><span class=\"c2\">NDP leader Andrew Horwath criticized both Ford and Del Duca for their parties\u2019 histories of promoting privatization policies. \u201cPrivatization is not the answer, and New Democrats have always stood against privatization, notwithstanding that both the Liberals and Progressive Conservatives brought privatization to home care and long-term care,\u201d said Horwath.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c6\"><span class=\"c2\">However, despite several exchanges between the leaders on the issue, no candidate was able to land a major blow regarding Ford\u2019s privatization record, according to Gventer: \u201cThe government got off lightly in all of this.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c6\"><span class=\"c2\">While he was critical of the opposition\u2019s under-performance regarding privatization, Gventer did praise Del Duca for acknowledging the lessons he learned during the Liberals\u2019 previous reign from 2003 to 2018. \u201cI\u2019ll give credit to the Liberals,\u201d said Gventer. \u201cDel Duca said, \u2018I\u2019ve learned something. I\u2019ve learned that I have to start listening to my people,\u2019 and their platform reflects that change, at least to an extent,\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c6\"><span class=\"c2\">Del Duca\u2019s comments came during a question on the lessons leaders have learned throughout their careers, with the Liberal leader saying, \u201cIt can be easy to sort of fall into the trap of doing your best and not necessarily paying close attention. I think that was a really important lesson that I learned through 2018.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c6\"><span class=\"c2\">While the health care portion of Monday\u2019s debate did touch on issues related to privatization, the segment also included a lengthy discussion on the government\u2019s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, including Ford\u2019s treatment of nurses and other front-line workers, as well as his decisions regarding long-term care.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c6\"><span class=\"c2\">However, as with the privatization debate, Gventer said that the leaders missed out on the opportunity to call out Ford\u2019s record and instead focused on \u201csuperficial\u201d matters. \u201cDel Duca\u2019s argument [that] \u2018You wouldn\u2019t let kids go to parks\u2019 was a superficial issue in terms of [Ford\u2019s] overall performance,\u201d Gventer said, noting he would have liked to see more discussion on the state of public health care in Ontario as a result of the pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c6\"><span class=\"c2\">\u201cThe real factor about COVID, which was raised but not adequately raised, is that we\u2019ve undermined, we\u2019ve under-resourced public medical care,\u201d Gventer insisted. \u201cThe issue about COVID is the understanding and the under-resourcing of health care right across this province, and so we weren\u2019t adequately prepared \u2026 Tying those together did not happen well [in the debate] \u2026 I think that context is being lost, and the government is getting off easy on this.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c6\"><span class=\"c2\">Ultimately, Gventer believes the opposition parties failed to effectively stand up to Ford and criticize his record on health care over the last four years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c5\"><span class=\"c2 c13\">\u201cI worry that this debate did not bring home [how] the government has failed people and the horrors it has perpetrated: not giving sick leave [or] holding companies to account, [and] not providing the direction in terms of PPE and long-term care.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c5\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kingstonist.com\/news\/kingston-health-coalition-responds-to-provincial-leaders-debate\/\"><span class=\"c38\">Link to the original article<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(May 17, 2022) By: Dylan Chenier, Kingstonist Members of the Kingston Health Coalition hold up signs at the corner of Sir John A.
