The Acting Medical Officer of Health with experience in the field dating back to the early 1970s said the system must change and citizen views play a crucial role.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c8\"><span class=\"c2\">\u201cWe really need health care reform,\u201d Cushman said. \u201cHaving a citizen coalition to advocate for not only large scale but to help individuals \u2013 that\u2019s commendable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c8\"><span class=\"c2\">He listed several areas in need of attention, all of which were also cited by a member of the Ontario Health Coalition based in Ottawa. Cushman talked of greater home care (the Ford government was moving toward more spending on hospitals before the election call). The lack of family physicians is another problem; it is estimated that 50 per cent of county residents have no family doctor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c8\"><span class=\"c2\">However, Renfrew paramedic services is far superior to most other regions in Ontario, he added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c8\"><span class=\"c2\">Ed Cashman agrees on all points. From Ottawa, he is the volunteer at Ontario Health Coalition fielding many calls from Renfrew during the pandemic. Helping patients navigate the system is among the duties his organization undertakes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c8\"><span class=\"c2\">\u201cLet\u2019s start with what\u2019s working in Renfrew county. The paramedic service is top of the line,\u201d Cashman said. \u201cIt\u2019s in primary care \u2013 family doctors \u2013 that is\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c11\"><a class=\"c17\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.insideottawavalley.com\/news-story\/10605359-six-arnprior-services-made-difficult-with-no-family-doctor\/&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1654833607877595&amp;usg=AOvVaw36jdiEk4teguwP6VLy51Z3\">very serious<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c2\">. Not having follow ups means people are going to the ER when they shouldn\u2019t be. And if you don\u2019t have a car, you\u2019re out of luck.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c8\"><span class=\"c2\">The government should allow for more medical students and lessen restrictions on those who study outside Canada, he said. New doctors, often burdened with student debt, opt to specialize rather than taken on the costs of setting up a private practice (staff, rent and more). The government should assist in these areas, Cashman said, adding that doctor salaries are not an issue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c8\"><span class=\"c2\">The \u201cumbrella\u201d organization is non-profit and non-partisan. Nevertheless, it is outspoken \u2013 through rallies and media campaigns &#8211; about defending the public health care system and strengthen the principles of the Canada Health Act. It opposes what it calls the Ford government\u2019s privatization of hospitals, supports\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c11\"><a class=\"c17\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.insideottawavalley.com\/news-story\/10336268--ludicrously-low-ontario-psw-announcement-shocks-advocacy-group\/&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1654833607878183&amp;usg=AOvVaw1_ED0HTr6zTN7FMZd8JwoL\">more long-term care staff<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c2\">, and recently called for a reinstated mask mandate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c8\"><span class=\"c2\">Local chapters are often comprised of board members who are from the health care sector, retired or working, often union members.
