{"id":19059,"date":"2022-05-06T23:30:51","date_gmt":"2022-05-07T03:30:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/?p=19059"},"modified":"2022-06-09T23:31:31","modified_gmt":"2022-06-10T03:31:31","slug":"provincial-candidates-should-push-for-growing-health-care-services-in-burgeoning-durham-regional-chair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/provincial-candidates-should-push-for-growing-health-care-services-in-burgeoning-durham-regional-chair\/","title":{"rendered":"Provincial candidates should push for growing health-care services in burgeoning Durham: regional chair"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c5 c13\"><span class=\"c2\">(May 5, 2022)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c5 c13\"><span class=\"c2\">By: Reka Szekely, Welland Tribune<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c24\"><span class=\"c2\">Every candidate running in the provincial election in Durham should work to understand the region\u2019s health-care challenges, says Regional Chair John Henry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c24\"><span class=\"c2\">Henry said massive growth in the area, with the population expected to double by 2051, means that health-care services must continue to grow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c24\"><span class=\"c2\">\u201cWhen you double your population, you need to think about the infrastructure that is needed to meet that increase in population and that\u2019s health care, long-term care, there\u2019s a number of moving pieces that have to be addressed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c24\"><span class=\"c2\"><a class=\"c17\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.durhamregion.com\/news-story\/10597174--huge-huge-celebration-for-all-of-us-lakeridge-gardens-opens-in-ajax-in-just-13-months\/&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1654833607904884&amp;usg=AOvVaw1it_3Cuz0mpt1Mip_YwFIv\">A good news story for Durham was the rapid 13-month construction of a new long-term-care home in Ajax<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c2\">, adjacent to the Ajax-Pickering hospital, that added 320 beds to a region with some of the longest long-term-care wait-lists in Ontario.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c24\"><span class=\"c2\">\u201cI was very proud to be there, and from start to finish, it was about 18 month. So that modular construction allows us to move faster and Ajax is the first example of that, so we know that we can do this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c24\"><span class=\"c2\">Henry pointed out the province is also set to fund a 200-bed region-operated facility in north Pickering in the Seaton community and has awarded additional beds to privately owned long-term-care companies as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c24\"><span class=\"c2\">\u201cThe challenge you have going forward is if your population increases at the rate it does, we need to play catch up and then meet those future needs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c24\"><span class=\"c2\">As of March 2022, there were 12,000 people on the wait-list for long-term care in the Central East area of Ontario, which includes all Durham homes as well as homes in Scarborough, Northumberland, Peterborough and the Kawarthas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c24\"><span class=\"c2\">Regionally owned facilities had some of the longest wait-lists, with more than 1,000 people waiting for a spot at Fairview Lodge in Whitby and 860 people on the list at Hillsdale Estates in Oshawa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c24\"><span class=\"c2\">Another major health-care priority for Durham is the advancement of a new hospital<\/span><span class=\"c2\"><a class=\"c17\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.durhamregion.com\/news-story\/10549775--exciting-day-for-residents-whitby-chosen-for-site-of-next-durham-hospital\/&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1654833607905859&amp;usg=AOvVaw0ROBKvz3r0Sy8e9DoeNZSw\">. Lakeridge Health recently determined that Durham\u2019s next hospital should be located in Whitby<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c2\">\u00a0and Henry estimates it will be roughly a decade before that facility is built, if the province advances the project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c24\"><span class=\"c2\">\u201cI\u2019m expecting that project will move ahead and hopefully see it completed; I think 10 years would be fast, there\u2019s a lot of things that need to be done.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c24\"><span class=\"c2\">The regional chair said he\u2019s hoping that election candidates understand health care is a regionwide issue and that they advocate for the whole region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c24\"><span class=\"c2\">\u201cDurham region has seven ridings people are running for, it\u2019s important that those candidates running understand the complexities of the challenges that we\u2019re having across Durham Region \u2026 I would expect all candidates would tour their communities to understand the needs for mental and addiction and homelessness (services).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c24\"><span class=\"c2\">Lance Livingstone is the co-chair of\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"c2\"><a class=\"c17\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/durhamhealth&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1654833607906621&amp;usg=AOvVaw0KOwuKYqMza4Sd_pjlfBYz\">the Durham Chapter of the Ontario Healthcare Coalition.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c24\"><span class=\"c2\">He said his organization will be lobbying for a public health-care system through the provincial election.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c24\"><span class=\"c2\">\u201cWe don\u2019t want private hospitals,\u201d said Livingstone. \u201cYou know what health care is like in the United States \u2026 people with money say I\u2019ll pay this extra, let me in first. We don\u2019t want that. We need to make sure it\u2019s by need, doesn\u2019t matter if you\u2019re poor or rich.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c24\"><span class=\"c2\">That extends to the issue of long-term care where Livingstone\u2019s organization is one of the organizations lobbying to make all long-term-care homes non-profit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c24\"><span class=\"c2\">\u201cWe do not want more private long-term care,\u201d he said, adding that he wants dollars spent on long-term care to be used for care. \u201cThe non-profit ones are not out to make a profit for shareholders.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c24\"><span class=\"c2\">Livingstone said he believes non-profit long-term-care homes performed better during the COVID-19 pandemic because they weren\u2019t worried about making a profit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c24\"><span class=\"c2\">Though some members of the Durham Chapter of the health coalition have campaigned for NDP candidates, Livingstone said as a group the Durham health coalition is non-partisan and is planning on organizing a health-care focused debate during the election.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c7 c13\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandtribune.ca\/local-oshawa\/news\/provincial-election\/2022\/05\/05\/provincial-candidates-should-push-for-growing-health-care-services-in-burgeoning-durham-regional-chair.html\"><span class=\"c2\">Link to the original article<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(May 5, 2022) By: Reka Szekely, Welland Tribune Every candidate running in the provincial election in Durham should work to understand the region\u2019s health-care challenges, says Regional Chair John Henry.
