{"id":19397,"date":"2022-09-01T16:49:02","date_gmt":"2022-09-01T20:49:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/?p=19397"},"modified":"2022-09-17T16:49:42","modified_gmt":"2022-09-17T20:49:42","slug":"seniors-waiting-in-hospital-beds-for-nursing-home-spots-target-of-new-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/seniors-waiting-in-hospital-beds-for-nursing-home-spots-target-of-new-law\/","title":{"rendered":"Seniors waiting in hospital beds for nursing home spots target of new law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(August 31, 2022)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By: Antonella Artuso, Toronto Sun<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Doug Ford government passed legislation Wednesday that will bring more pressure on seniors to vacate acute care beds if hospitals decide their needs can be better met in a nursing home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under Bill 7, if a doctor determines a patient doesn\u2019t require the \u201cintensity of resources or services\u201d provided in a hospital setting, a placement coordinator will search for the nearest available long-term care (LTC) bed deemed appropriate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s about giving proper health care to the people who should be in long-term-care homes,\u201d Ford said Wednesday, prior to the bill passing and become law. \u201cIt\u2019s differentiating between sticking your loved one in a hospital bed \u2014 imagine that, a hospital bed, one of your loved ones, when alarms are going off, bells are going off all night \u2014 compared (to) giving them a beautiful home to stay in, a long-term-care home which will have proper care.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seniors or people with disabilities waiting for an open bed in their preferred nursing home are called \u201calternative level of care\u201d (ALC) patients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In hopes up freeing up hospital beds for the anticipated fall increase in flu and COVID-19 cases, the government has empowered hospitals to become more vigorously involved in finding ALC patients a nursing home bed, even if it\u2019s just a temporary spot until a preferred LTC home becomes available.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CUPE, the Ontario Health Coalition (OHC) and advocates for the elderly called on the Ontario Human Rights Commission on Wednesday to use its public inquiry powers to investigate Bill 7 as systemic age discrimination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OHC Executive Director Natalie Mehra said the bill allows hospitals placement coordinators to assess patients, share their personal health information broadly, prepare an LTC application and then have them admitted \u2014 all without their consent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is a terribly egregious piece of legislation,\u201d Mehra said. \u201cIt targets one class of patients, the frail elderly mostly and people with disabilities, who are waiting for access to long-term care beds.
