{"id":19433,"date":"2022-08-20T17:18:36","date_gmt":"2022-08-20T21:18:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/?p=19433"},"modified":"2022-09-17T17:20:29","modified_gmt":"2022-09-17T21:20:29","slug":"elderly-soon-to-be-forced-out-of-hospital-and-into-long-term-care-beds-coalition-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/elderly-soon-to-be-forced-out-of-hospital-and-into-long-term-care-beds-coalition-says\/","title":{"rendered":"Elderly soon to be forced out of hospital and into long-term care beds, coalition says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(August 19, 2022)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By: Dave Battagello, Windsor Star<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health care changes announced this week by the provincial government may spell trouble for seniors as it includes plans to force some out of hospital beds and into long-term care homes not of their choice \u2014\u00a0possibly a great distance away from their home community, said the Ontario Health Coalition on Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis legislation overrides the fundamental human rights of frail, vulnerable elderly patients,\u201d said Natalie Mehra, the coalition\u2019s executive director.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hospital officials for years have often held discussions with elderly patients and their families about moving to long-term care facilities to free up hospital beds. Patients currently can choose up to five long-term care homes to shortlist as their preference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But proposed health-care changes announced this week by the government would enable hospitals to push elderly patients into any long-term care facilities not of their choice\u2014 even outside of the local community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long-Term Care Minister Paul Calandra said the More Beds, Better Care Act, if passed, will provide hospitals with the ability to transfer patients awaiting a long-term care bed of their choice to be placed in a \u201ctemporary\u201d home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goal will be to keep elderly patients as close to home as possible, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But given the current hospital crisis and need for more acute-care beds, the transfer of a patient to any long-term care facility could be carried out without their consent if an attending physician believes \u201dan alternate level of care\u201d should be considered and patient be discharged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There will be distance limits included in the legislation before it\u2019s finalized, Calandra said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the coalition noted life expectancy of seniors entering long-term care on average is only 18 months and how inadequate long-term care facilities has been one of the most common complaints received by patient advocates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat we think this is about is filling up beds of the worst long-term care homes that people do not want to go to \u2014 for good reason,\u201d Mehra said. \u201cThe government cannot override the rights of seniors to shore up the profits of long-term care operators with terrible records and reputations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A narrative of the elderly taking up hospital resources must also end as they have just as much right to a proper level of care as anyone younger, said members of the coalition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBy sending a patient without consent to any long-term care bed available shows elderly are being discriminated against,\u201d said Shirley Roebuck, chairwoman of the Sarnia Chatham-Kent Health Coalition and a retired nurse. \u201cThis takes away their fundamental right of choice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most \u201calternate-level of care\u201d patients classified as being in need of a long-term care bed are elderly, she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By forcing them into any available long-term care home, even far from their own community, \u201cyou could be asking their spouse, family or older friends to drive miles and miles, even in the snow, to see their loved ones,\u201d Roebuck said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMany more long-term care patients are going to be isolated.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She was encouraging people to speak out against the government\u2019s proposed legislation before it gets finalized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe need people to speak up and stand up,\u201d Roebuck said. \u201cWe need to create a huge fight back on this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/windsorstar.com\/news\/local-news\/elderly-to-be-forced-out-of-hospital-and-into-long-term-care-beds-coalition-says\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Link to original article<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(August 19, 2022) By: Dave Battagello, Windsor Star Health care changes announced this week by the provincial government may spell trouble for seniors as it includes plans to force some out of hospital beds and into long-term care homes not of their choice \u2014\u00a0possibly a great distance away from their home community, said the Ontario [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[21],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-19433","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-ohc-in-the-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
