A few weeks later, she was diagnosed with trisomy 18, a rare genetic condition that causes several health issues.\u00a0(Clarissa Macgregor-Mitchell)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"story\">\n<p>Sheena Wallace-Wilson and Bruce Gagnon\u00a0of Windsor, Ont., want their sick month-old daughter to be surrounded by loved ones at her bedside.<\/p>\n<p>But the couple and other family of Olivia Gagnon\u00a0say\u00a0that&#8217;s not happening because of\u00a0a policy \u2014 which they argue is too restrictive \u2014\u00a0at the Windsor hospital where she&#8217;s now being cared for\u00a0following her birth in London, Ont.<\/p>\n<p>Olivia&#8217;s family said\u00a0they were told by Windsor Regional Hospital&#8217;s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit\u00a0(NICU), which cares for premature and seriously ill babies,\u00a0that only two essential caregivers can be with the newborn. The hospital says the\u00a0rule is meant to keep all the babies in the unit protected\u00a0from outside germs and illnesses.<\/p>\n<p>Olivia was born Sept. 11 at London Health Sciences Centre, where any two people were able to visit the newborn, the family said. It&#8217;s something they were grateful for\u00a0after learning\u00a0Olivia has trisomy 18, also known as Edward&#8217;s syndrome, a severe genetic condition.<\/p>\n<p>An extra copy of chromosome 18 is behind the condition, which can cause\u00a0severe developmental delays, birth defects and health problems that can involve almost every organ system in the body, according to<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">\u00a0<a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aboutkidshealth.ca\/Article?contentid=875&amp;language=English\">an article from<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>SickKids Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Most babies die before or shortly after they&#8217;re born\u00a0\u2014 about 50 per cent of\u00a0newborns\u00a0live longer than six to nine days. Of those who survive the first 30 days, 36 per cent might be alive at one year.<\/p>\n<p>Olivia&#8217;s family said each day is an unknown.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She&#8217;s such an amazing girl to be fighting this long &#8230;\u00a0most babies don&#8217;t make it this far and she&#8217;s been doing an amazing job,&#8221; said Gagnon.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s difficult to know how long Olivia will\u00a0live, but she&#8217;s not considered palliative at this time.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, family\u00a0members say\u00a0it&#8217;s unclear when they&#8217;ll get to bring her home. With so many unknowns, Wallace-Wilson and Gagnon want Olivia to be surrounded by her family as much as she can and meet her\u00a0half-sister, great grandparents, aunts and uncles.<\/p>\n<p>Despite their pleas, the couple\u00a0said, the hospital won&#8217;t bend the rules.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s really hard,&#8221; said\u00a0Shelly Wilson, Olivia&#8217;s grandmother on her mother&#8217;s side.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I live blocks away, yet I can&#8217;t even see my granddaughter. We don&#8217;t know that if she goes to sleep she&#8217;s not going to wake up, we don&#8217;t know if she&#8217;s going to be here tomorrow or an hour from now\u00a0\u2014\u00a0we just don&#8217;t know. It just seems so inhumane and cruel.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Olivia&#8217;s grandparents on her father&#8217;s side, Debbie and Mike Chedore, said every day the newborn is alive is a &#8220;gift.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I just don&#8217;t get the difference between here and London,&#8221; Mike said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The people that are making these decisions, I mean it&#8217;s very easy to make a decision, take the safe route, but not considering the ramifications of everybody else involved.\u00a0There&#8217;s human beings involved here. Exemptions are made on a case by case basis.\u00a0(Jennifer La Grassa\/CBC)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Riddell said it&#8217;s now flu season, along with\u00a0respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)\u00a0and COVID-19 circulating. She said if any babies contract these, it could\u00a0be harmful.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, she said, the hospital needs to reduce the number of people coming into the NICU, especially since the unit is open, meaning the babies don&#8217;t have private rooms. The couple says they would feel a lot better having family stay with Olivia if they need to step out and take a break.\u00a0(Submitted by Shelly Wilson )<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The family also spoke with a patient advocate through Windsor Regional Hospital, but said the answer was still no.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Not only for Olivia but for any baby who has a terminal illness, this is ridiculous. There should be something that can happen, like they can have a room or something, or the baby can be moved to [a room] and then visitors can come and see her\u00a0\u2014\u00a0I don&#8217;t see how that is such a big deal,&#8221; said Gagnon.<\/p>\n<p>Natalie Mehra, executive director of the Ontario Health Coalition, which\u00a0looks to improve the health-care system, said she&#8217;s &#8220;torn&#8221; in a situation such as\u00a0this, given the strains hospitals are facing.<\/p>\n<p>With COVID-19 outbreaks and low staffing, Mehra said, it&#8217;s reasonable for a hospital to decline taking in more visitors, but it also needs to ensure it&#8217;s not being unnecessarily restrictive.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Health care is about providing care for the patients &#8230;\u00a0where the policies have veered into being too restrictive, into losing sight of compassion, we have to push back,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s what Olivia&#8217;s family said it will continue to do, to ensure the newborn knows she is loved.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every second is so precious,&#8221; said grandmother Wilson.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She&#8217;s fighting, this little girl is fighting so hard.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/windsor\/windsor-regional-hospital-visitation-policy-1.6615191\">Click here for original article\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(October 17, 2022) By: CBC News Olivia Gagnon was born on Sept. 11 at London Health Sciences Centre in southwestern Ontario.
