{"id":28917,"date":"2023-08-31T11:18:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-31T15:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/?p=28917"},"modified":"2023-09-21T15:20:12","modified_gmt":"2023-09-21T19:20:12","slug":"we-dont-need-to-privatize-health-care-penetanguishene-residents-voice-concern-about-direction-of-public-health-care-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/we-dont-need-to-privatize-health-care-penetanguishene-residents-voice-concern-about-direction-of-public-health-care-system\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;We don\u2019t need to privatize health care&#8217;: Penetanguishene residents voice concern about direction of public health-care system"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(August 29, 2023)<\/p>\n<p>By: Andrew Mendler, Midland Mirror<\/p>\n<div class=\"subscriber-preview\">\n<p>Don Copping and Fran Moreau are growing increasingly concerned about the direction the provincial health-care system is headed in.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-preview\">\n<p>The Penetanguishene residents, who are north Simcoe\u2019s representatives with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/event-stop-the-ford-governments-privatization-of-our-public-hospitals-core-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ontario Health Coalition (OHC)<\/a>, are calling on the public to push back against what they view as an increasing privatization of health care.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>During the past year, the provincial government has moved forward with plans to allow a variety of surgeries and diagnostic services, such as cataracts surgeries, MRI and CT scans, to be conducted at private, for-profit clinics.<\/p>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>While the government says this will help address the backlog created by the pandemic, Copping believes the strategy is destroying the foundation of the public health-care system.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>\u201cThe public at large does not understand that the staff at those private clinics are being pulled out of public service,\u201d said Copping, who is worried about the potential of more public services being allowed to be conducted by private clinics.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>\u201cStaff will be solicited from the community and the people who depend on public health care will end up with longer wait times.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>Burnout caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, combined with the lure of private clinics and the low wage increases the government offered medical professionals is pushing even more people out of the public system, Copping said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe dichotomy between what people need, should be paid and can actually earn is getting so far apart. It\u2019s destroying loyalty,\u201d Copping said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>Copping and Moreau plan to attend an upcoming rally at Queen\u2019s Park on Sept. 25, to oppose the government\u2019s health-care plan. Information about how to catch a bus to the rally can be found at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/event-stop-the-ford-governments-privatization-of-our-public-hospitals-core-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ontariohealthcoalition.ca<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>\u201cIt will be politically impossible for them to continue to privatize our public hospitals\u2019 services against the will of the vast majority of Ontario&#8217;s (residents),\u201d said Natalie Mehra, executive director of the OHC. \u201cLet us make that happen sooner than later because every service we lose is\u00a0extremely hard to get back.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.opseulocal329.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ontario Public Sector Employees Union (OPSEU) Local 329<\/a>, which represents staff at the Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care, is also sending a contingent to the rally.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>President Justin LeGros is \u201cextremely concerned\u201d with the direction the public health-care system is headed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>\u201cThe government has deliberately defunded the health-care system to create this crisis, and are trying to frame privatization as the only option,\u201d LeGros said. \u201cIt\u2019s like steering a plane into a mountain, then blaming the mountain for being in the way when you crash.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"tncms-region-article_instory_middle\" class=\"tncms-region hidden-print tsArticleRegion subscriber-only\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>According to LeGros, the hours of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.simcoe.com\/news\/ridiculous-rates-waypoint-centre-georgian-bay-general-hospital-pay-high-price-for-workers-from-temp\/article_696d1764-0870-536a-b9c8-13aa3d9831ed.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported agency use<\/a>\u00a0jumped to 1,183,358 in 2022-23, up from 449,608 in 2020-21. The cost of employing private agency staff increased to $173.7 million from $38.4 million during that time span.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>The hourly rate relative to the amount of hours worked climbed to $140 per hour in 2022 from $85 per hour in 2021, and it continues to rise, according to LeGros.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>\u201cThe use of agency nurses continues to cripple the public system,\u201d LeGros said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t need to privatize health care.
