Eric Bunnell<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"credit\">PHOTO BY ERIC BUNNELL<\/span>\u00a0\/<span class=\"distributor\">jpg, SF, apsmc<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we float these lanterns on the water, it is my wish that the world will live in peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And with that sendoff spoken by Dr. Sharon Koivu, about 20 spectators watched Sunday evening at Pinafore Park as two-dozen brightly decorated, candlelighted paper lanterns were set on Lake Pinafore to commemorate the anniversary of the Second World War devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by atomic bombs.<\/p>\n<p>It was the post-pandemic return of an annual observation started 39 years ago by Sparta Quakers.<\/p>\n<p>Despite a gentle prodding, the lanterns hugged the shore as violinist Ian Johnson played John Williams\u2019 theme from Schindler\u2019s List.<\/p>\n<p>But before the lanterns were collected, their peaceful sight underscored the terrible threat of nuclear war facing the world today.<\/p>\n<p>Recalling the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki 78 years ago, Sharon said:\u00a0\u201cWhile these events may seem distant, we must not forget the past or we are destined to repeat it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, at a time Russia has threatened the use of nuclear weapons in its war on Ukraine, Sharon told her listeners, \u201ccalls for peace remain relevant today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn August of last year, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that the world is now in \u2018a time of nuclear danger not seen since the height of the Cold War.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And in January, the hands of the Doomsday Clock were moved forward.<\/p>\n<p>Sharon is a longtime peace activist. In medical school in the \u201980s at now Western University, she was a founder of the London chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility \u2013 today, the International Physicians for Prevention of Nuclear War.<\/p>\n<p>And chatting later, she discussed whether disarmament truly can happen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it is possible,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u201cThat\u2019s a question I\u2019ve pondered now for almost 40 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As long as there are nuclear weapons, there is the threat of nuclear war, Sharon says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like to believe humans can work together for peace, as much as we can work together for our destruction.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Health-care protest<\/h3>\n<p>In May, more than 400,000 Ontarians voted in a referendum led by the Ontario Health Coalition, including residents of St. Thomas and Elgin.<\/p>\n<p>And overwhelmingly, by 98 per cent, they said they oppose\u00a0the\u00a0privatization of public health. Among other things, the provincial government\u2019s Bill 60 permits establishment of for-profit private clinics to provide OHIP-funded services. The government says the move will increase access to health care. Critics say it will gut public health.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the coalition is calling for a mass protest\u00a0on\u00a0Sept. 25 at Queen\u2019s Park.<\/p>\n<section class=\"article-content__content-group article-content__content-group--story\">And, locally, Julie Berry, who organized referendum polling last spring in Sparta and Port Stanley, has booked a bus from St. Thomas for the noon-hour gathering in Toronto.Although she\u2019s better known as an activist working for peace and social justice,\u00a0Julie says, \u201cif health care isn\u2019t social justice, I don\u2019t know what it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is room on the highway coach for 56 people\u00a0and it\u2019s slated to leave at 9 a.m. from the parking lot of the Doug Tarry ballplex before returning\u00a0in\u00a0late afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>The ride is free \u2013 \u201cWe would love donations\u201d \u2013 and to claim a seat, call Julie at 226-973-6622.<\/p>\n<h3>Elgin County Pride<\/h3>\n<p>Rainbow flags are flying in St. Thomas and Elgin, where both municipalities have declared this week as Elgin Pride Week.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<div class=\"ad__section-border article-content__ad-group ad_counter_6\">\n<section class=\"ad\" aria-describedby=\"advertisment4049268525260429635534102227582976\">\n<div id=\"advertisment4049268525260429635534102227582976\" class=\"visually-hidden\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/smartcdn.gprod.postmedia.digital\/nexus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/sf-0811-sf-people-2.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=288&amp;sig=4n6rFC4aUQZaUUgvHsjh0A\" alt=\"Elgin County Pride flag-raising\" width=\"331\" height=\"248\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Smiling for the camera at an Elgin county Pride Week flag-raising Tuesday are Warden Ed Ketchabaw, right, Elgin Pride Week co-chair Devon Church, centre, and Elgin\u00d0Middlesex\u00d0London Tory MP Karen Vecchio.Eric Bunnell jpg, SF, apsmc<\/em><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<div>\n<p>There\u2019s a host of activities planned by the organizing Elgin County Pride committee, an offshoot of the Rainbow Optimist Club Southwestern Ontario, including a weekend of events at Pinafore Park,\u00a0starting with a movie night Friday. Details\u00a0are\u00a0posted to elgincountypride.com.<\/p>\n<p>Proclaiming the week at a flag-raising Tuesday, Elgin Warden Ed Ketchabaw told onlookers, \u201cThe intent of the Pride flag being raised \u2026 is to show support for the Rainbow Community and show the commitment of the community to provide a safe and welcoming place that improves the overall quality of life for all members.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe look forward to the County of Elgin and its community members as being and fulfilling their title as ambassadors and leaders as we strive for equality in Ontario, Canada and,\u00a0even more broadly, the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joining the flag-raising\u00a0was Elgin\u2013Middlesex\u2013London Tory MP Karen Vecchio, who\u00a0spoke of unity, especially in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important that we stick together. We are friends. We are neighbours. And we are all here together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Devon Church, co-chair of Elgin Pride with Marty Withenshaw, said following the flag-raising that seeing the rainbow flag flying on the county\u2019s ceremonial flag pole in front of Elgin Heritage Centre is meaningful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we are driving by, we feel like someone is actually going to help us\u00a0if we need it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Devon, a leader of Queer Club, a youth group that meets from 7\u00a0p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays at the YWCA St. Thomas-Elgin, announced Tuesday the formation of a social group for adults, which will meet the third Thursday of the month at the Canada Southern railway station.<\/p>\n<section class=\"article-content__content-group article-content__content-group--story\">Earlier, St. Thomas Mayor Joe Preston\u00a0proclaimed the week in the city\u00a0at a flag-raising Friday at city hall before the long holiday weekend.<\/p>\n<h3>New food bank numbers<\/h3>\n<p>Well, no sooner was the ink dry on last week\u2019s entry about\u00a0the\u00a0increased demand on services of the St. Thomas-Elgin Food Bank, that new numbers\u00a0were provided.<\/p>\n<p>As of Aug. 4, the food bank had provided groceries so far this year to 10,883 people.<\/p>\n<p>That number compares to 13,462 for all of 2022, 10,081 for the 12 months of 2021, and 8,230 in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got seven skids of soup today,\u201d Karen McDade, the agency\u2019s PR and administration manager, said Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>And even at a special price, \u201cthere goes $12,000 in the blink of an eye!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Karen asked for another mention of the agency\u2019s new Top-Up Program for families with school-age children four- to 18 years. Happy to oblige!<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<div class=\"ad__section-border article-content__ad-group ad_counter_9\">\n<section class=\"ad\" aria-describedby=\"advertisment9457211616761371491437634480242688\">\n<div id=\"advertisment9457211616761371491437634480242688\" class=\"visually-hidden\">\n<p>With school out for summer, and school food programs on vacation, the Top-Up is a weekly boost of lunch things like Kraft Dinner, soup, noodle bowls, granola bars and puddings, and juice boxes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>All the above in advance of a major summertime food drive Aug. 17 at grocery stores around town.<\/p>\n<h3>Guest curator<\/h3>\n<p>A note from Elgin County Heritage Centre.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are winding up the museum\u2019s most successful show since we had the History of the Toilet here in 2008,\u201d curator Mike Baker says with a smile.<\/p>\n<p>Cycling: An Unspoken History is to close Sept. 2 after being extended through the summer. Guest curator Rick Wolfe \u2013 whose collection includes the 16 rare bicycles and ephemera on exhibit, among them an example of one of the earliest motorcycles built, a 1901 Lamson \u2013 is to give his final public tour of the show\u00a0at\u00a02 p.m. on Aug. 24.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRick brings an interesting personal story to\u00a0each bike, having\u00a0ridden\u00a0and\u00a0restored most of the bicycles in the\u00a0exhibit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(And who knows? He may even share the embarrassment of crashing head over heels on a high wheeler \u2013 not an uncommon event with the type \u2013 and being thrown smack dab onto the thorns of a brier patch.)<\/p>\n<h3>Colours in the Park<\/h3>\n<p>And just to remember that Colours in the Park \u2013 a celebration of 40 different cultures \u2013 is calendared for the afternoon of Aug. 26 at Pinafore Park.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the followup to Colours on the Beach on July 15 in Port Stanley, and is a funder in support of the campaign to raise $8 million for an MRI machine at St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>The afternoon is organized by Indian Culture of London Ontario, with the South Asian Association of London and Surrounding.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to food and music, there is the fun of participants throwing handfuls\u00a0of coloured powders on each other \u2013 an event inspired by the Indian springtime festival of Holi.
