It&#8217;s not up to the patients to do the administrative part of the health care, we pay enough taxes, we do our due diligence,&#8221; Akio Maroon told CBC News.<\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Maroon<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AkioMaroon\/status\/1678462983091941376\">\u00a0tweeted about the charges\u00a0<\/a>after she received an email from Toronto General Hospital notifying her about a series of tests for\u00a0vertigo, she said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">One of the tests,\u00a0the video head impulse test\u00a0or VHIT, examines a person&#8217;s sense of balance. Maroon was told via email that OHIP did not cover the test as of July 1 and that it would cost her $120.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In a statement to CBC Toronto Wednesday, the hospital network said the charge was due to a &#8220;communication and interpretation error with the physicians practice and billings department around covered and uncovered services.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;We sincerely apologize for the concern this caused our patient,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\">No coverage changes to the test under OHIP: ministry<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">With Maroon unable to work and her finances tight, she tweeted about the cost to see if others had a similar experience and to find out the cost was valid, she said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">She had planned\u00a0to pay because her doctor made it clear the test was needed to determine if she had vertigo, she said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Maroon&#8217;s tweet sparked a conversation on perceived changes within Ontario&#8217;s health-care\u00a0system, particularly as the province\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/ontario-health-care-bill-1.6835997\">passed legislation in May\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0allowing private clinics to offer publicly funded surgeries.\u00a0Maroon said her initial assumption was that the charge was due to health-care cuts.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i.cbc.ca\/1.6541306.1689199407!\/cumulusImage\/httpImage\/image.jpg_gen\/derivatives\/original_780\/toronto-general-hospital.jpg\" alt=\"Toronto general hospital is pictured\" width=\"569\" height=\"379\" \/><br \/>\n<em>A view of Toronto General Hospital on Aug. 4, 2022. (Carlos Osorio\/CBC)<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">On Wednesday afternoon, the Ministry of Health tweeted there have been no coverage changes to the test under OHIP. &#8220;vHIT, including required equipment, staff and supplies is an insured service when medically necessary or rendered by an audiologist on staff,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">It also said patients should call 1-888-662-6613 or contact\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:protectpublichealth@ontario.ca\"><u>protectpublichealthcare@ontario.ca<\/u><\/a>\u00a0if they are being charged for an OHIP covered service, as it&#8217;s against the law.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Ontario Health Coalition, an advocacy organization that aims to protect and improve the province&#8217;s health-care system, told CBC Toronto that it has recently received &#8220;a historically high number of complaints&#8221; about &#8220;various&#8221; tests not being covered by OHIP.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Maroon said the overwhelming response she received from people across Ontario and Canada indicates there&#8217;s frustration around the health-care system and many don&#8217;t have the means to cover surprise costs\u00a0or find mistakes. While she&#8217;s relieved the issue was resolved\u2014 she is concerned patients have to spot these mistakes themselves.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Not everyone has the same ability to advocate for themselves,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a
