{"id":29180,"date":"2023-06-06T12:35:08","date_gmt":"2023-06-06T16:35:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/?p=29180"},"modified":"2023-12-01T12:37:28","modified_gmt":"2023-12-01T17:37:28","slug":"votes-gathered-to-stop-privatized-health-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/votes-gathered-to-stop-privatized-health-care\/","title":{"rendered":"Votes gathered to stop privatized health care"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(June 5 2023)<\/p>\n<p>By: Somer Slobodian, Niagra Now<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-1\">The Niagara Health<\/span>\u00a0Coalition was one of many coalitions that participated in a citizen-run referendum against new rules for health care across the province.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-root-2\"><\/span><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-2\">The referendum was<\/span>\u00a0held nearly two weeks ago by the Ontario Health Coalition in response to the provincial government\u2019s passing of Bill 60 which allows for-profit and third-party organizations to operate private clinics.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-root-3\"><\/span><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-3\">More than 50<\/span>\u00a0voting stations, staffed by more than 120 volunteers, were set up across the Niagara Region.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-root-4\"><\/span><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-4\">Niagara-on-the-Lake residents had<\/span>\u00a0a chance to vote at the old courthouse on Queen Street and at Sparky\u2019s Park in St. Davids on May 26 and 27.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-root-5\"><\/span><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-5\">Before the actual<\/span>\u00a0voting day, people had the opportunity to vote online or at other early voting locations.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-root-6\"><\/span><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-6\">In Niagara, residents<\/span>\u00a0had to answer two questions on the ballots.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-root-7\"><\/span><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-7\">The first question<\/span>\u00a0was: Do you want our public hospital services to be privatized to for-profit hospitals and clinics?<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-root-8\"><\/span><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-8\">Out of the<\/span>\u00a0whole region, 17,123 people voted no and 404 people voted yes.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-root-9\"><\/span><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-9\">The second question<\/span>\u00a0was: Do you want all existing sites of the Niagara hospitals to be maintained, protected and improved without any further cuts or closures?<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-root-10\"><\/span><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-10\">This question was<\/span>\u00a0only asked on the physical ballot and not on the online voting system.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-root-11\"><\/span><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-11\">There were 10,042<\/span>\u00a0who voted yes to maintaining Naigara\u2019s hospitals and 197 who voted no.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-root-12\"><\/span><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-12\">According to the<\/span>\u00a0Ontario Health Coalition\u2019s website, more than 380,000 people across the province voted to stop the privatization of public hospitals.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-root-13\"><\/span><span id=\"speechify-first-word-listening-nudge-13\">The ballots were<\/span>\u00a0delivered to the provincial government on the morning of May 31.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/niagaranow.com\/slider.phtml\/votes-gathered-to-stop-privatized-health-care\/\">Click here for original article<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(June 5 2023) By: Somer Slobodian, Niagra Now The Niagara Health\u00a0Coalition was one of many coalitions that participated in a citizen-run referendum against new rules for health care across the province.
