Have you had a chance to get to know your local candidates ahead of the provincial election? If not, you\u2019re not alone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

There is a noted lack of all-candidate debates in local ridings this go-around, and that lack of engagement has some interested parties worried about setting a precedent.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Margaret Prophet is the executive director of the Simcoe County Greenbelt Coalition.\u00a0Simcoe.com<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>spoke to her about\u00a0environmental issues<\/a><\/span>\u00a0ahead of the election, when it was mentioned that her group was one of several involved in co-ordinating a meet-the-candidates event.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The event \u2014 organized by the greenbelt coalition, along with CARP Barrie, the Simcoe County Health Coalition, Simcoe County KAIROS, SCAN! Barrie, OPSEU Local 305, Alliance for a Livable Ontario, Lake Simcoe Watch, and the Rescue Lake Simcoe Coalition \u2014 took place on Tuesday evening (Feb. 18), and candidates from across Simcoe County were invited to attend.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

While the weather was a significant factor, there were candidates representing the Liberals, NDP, and Greens in attendance, along with about 50 voters in person, and more than 150\u00a0streaming the event online<\/a><\/span>.<\/div>\n

However, not all invited candidates attended the event.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Prophet said the shortened election cycle \u2014 less than a month \u2014 made it difficult for community organizations like hers to get things in place in a timely fashion, adding that it was apparent that incumbents were unlikely to attend or even fill out their questionnaires.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cSo it leads to a \u2018why bother\u2019 attitude, which is a direct outcome of candidates deciding the public events and citizen-organized initiatives beyond pet favourites aren\u2019t \u2018worth it,\u2019\u201d she told\u00a0Simcoe.com<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in an email.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Incumbents in Simcoe County include Barrie\u2014Springwater\u2014Oro-Medonte\u2019s Doug Downey, Andrea Khanjin in Barrie-Innisfil, Simcoe North\u2019s Jill Dunlop, and Simcoe-Grey\u2019s Brian Saunderson.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Turns out, they\u2019re all members of the Ontario PC party.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Simcoe.com<\/a><\/span>\u00a0reached out to the party to ask why it isn\u2019t participating in all-candidates debates. The party\u2019s response was succinct.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cOntario PC candidates will spend every day of the campaign at people\u2019s doors, speaking to voters about our plan to protect Ontario,\u201d responded a party spokesperson who declined to provide their name or title when asked.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

This answer doesn\u2019t work for Prophet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cElected officials are there to strengthen democracy, not suppress it. If you\u2019re only willing to be accountable and transparent to your constituents on your terms and not what\u2019s best to keep the electorate engaged and informed, then that\u2019s a dangerous trend we\u2019re allowing,\u201d she warned.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Following an interview on the\u00a0state of health care in Barrie<\/a><\/span>, the Simcoe County Health Coalition\u2019s Anisa Carrascal expressed disappointment to\u00a0Simcoe.com<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in an apparent unwillingness to engage, saying this is nothing new, centring out the Ontario PC party specifically.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWe, in the past had the unfortunate experience, where the Conservative candidate generally doesn\u2019t come to any of the town halls organized during the election cycle,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

However,\u00a0Simcoe.com<\/a><\/span>\u00a0also reached out to the Liberal Party of Ontario, as well as the Green Party of Ontario and the Ontario NDP, to learn their stances on all-candidate events, but have not received a response from any of the three parties by our deadline.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In the end, Prophet says this behaviour should give folks something to think about when heading to the polls.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cA healthy democracy thrives on open dialogue, scrutiny, and the exchange of ideas \u2014 all of which are central to debates. In my mind, why would you give your vote to someone who isn\u2019t willing to demonstrate transparency and accountability?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Meanwhile, the\u00a0Barrie Chamber of Commerce<\/a><\/span>\u00a0has announced it is holding two candidate meet-and-greet sessions; the first taking place on Feb. 24 for the Barrie-Innisfil riding, the second on Feb. 25 for the riding of Barrie\u2014Springwater\u2014Oro-Medonte.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The chamber has not yet confirmed which parties will be in attendance, but more information on the events can be found\u00a0through its social feed<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n
