{"id":30315,"date":"2025-02-24T18:46:13","date_gmt":"2025-02-24T23:46:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/?p=30315"},"modified":"2025-02-26T13:53:34","modified_gmt":"2025-02-26T18:53:34","slug":"union-members-rally-outside-st-michaels-hospital-over-claims-of-750-job-cuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/union-members-rally-outside-st-michaels-hospital-over-claims-of-750-job-cuts\/","title":{"rendered":"Union members rally outside St. Michael\u2019s Hospital over claims of 750 job cuts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(February 24, 2025)<\/p>\n<p>By: Alex Flood, TorontoToday<\/p>\n<p>Union members say Toronto\u2019s hospitals are already running on a \u2018skeleton staff\u2019 \u2014 but hospital officials say job cut claims are \u2018grossly inaccurate\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Union members supporting hospital workers rallied in front of\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.torontotoday.ca\/local\/health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">St. Michael\u2019s Hospital<\/a><\/span>\u00a0on Monday where they voiced anger over allegations the health-care centre plans to cut 750 jobs.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) and the Ontario Council of Hospital Unions (OCHU) claimed 750 jobs are on the brink of elimination at St. Michael\u2019s Hospital due to provincial underfunding and the facility\u2019s \u201chuge deficit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Unity Health Toronto, the network that oversees St. Michael\u2019s and two other hospitals in the city, told\u00a0<em>TorontoToday\u00a0<\/em>the 750 figure is \u201cgrossly inaccurate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach fiscal year, we conduct a budgeting process which concludes on March 31,\u201d a Unity Health spokesperson said in an emailed statement. \u201cThe goal is to strengthen our financial health while maintaining the high quality, compassionate care that our patients expect and deserve from Unity Health Toronto and its hospital sites.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unity Health Toronto did not specify how many jobs, if any, could be eliminated at St. Michael\u2019s.\u00a0The network also did not comment on any financial deficit at the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>OCHU president Michael Hurley said Unity Health Toronto notified him of the alleged 750 employment cuts last year.<\/p>\n<p>The rumoured job losses aren\u2019t considered layoffs because they are vacant hospital positions that will be axed altogether, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Toronto is in a health-care crisis, unions say<\/p>\n<p>Hurley and other rallying union members placed blame for the alleged job cuts on the Doug Ford government\u2019s handling of health care across the province.<\/p>\n<p>CUPE said since taking office, the Ford government\u2019s increases to hospital funding have not kept pace with inflation, population growth, aging or the rising cost of drugs and medical technologies.<\/p>\n<p>The union argued the loss of 750 positions would only worsen issues like hallway medicine, long surgical wait times and staff\u00a0burnout.<\/p>\n<p>Hurley called any possible job reductions \u201cridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an emergency service. You can\u2019t afford to cut any staff here\u201d Hurley said. \u201cThis place is already running on skeleton staff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a teaching and research hospital, St. Michael\u2019s employs\u00a07,500 staff members.\u00a0The hospital\u2019s emergency room can\u00a0<a class=\"ga ga-ext\" href=\"https:\/\/www.infrastructureontario.ca\/en\/what-we-do\/projectssearch\/st.-michaels-hospital#:~:text=Enlarged%2C%20state%2Dof%2Dthe,as%20a%20regional%20trauma%20centre.?utm_source=torontotoday.ca&amp;utm_campaign=torontotoday.ca%3A%20outbound&amp;utm_medium=referral\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noopener\" data-ga-category=\"OutboundLink\" data-ga-action=\"OutboundLink\" data-ga-label=\"https:\/\/www.infrastructureontario.ca\/en\/what-we-do\/projectssearch\/st.-michaels-hospital#:~:text=Enlarged%2C%20state%2Dof%2Dthe,as%20a%20regional%20trauma%20centre.\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">accommodate<\/span><\/a>\u00a0over 70,000 visits annually.<\/p>\n<p>CUPE and OCHU jointly claimed more than 250,000 Ontarians are currently on a surgical wait list across\u00a0all hospitals across the province.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve got, on any given day, 2,000 people on stretchers in hospitals like this one and waiting for a bed \u2014 up from 1,000 when the premier promised he would eliminate hallway medicine,\u201d Hurley said. \u201c[Patients] wait for their surgeries and treatments longer than they should and sometimes it endangers their lives, and that\u2019s not right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to reporters on the campaign trail recently, Ford blamed emergency room overcrowding on patients showing up to the hospital unnecessarily.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You got a little scrape on your knee or whatever, they should be at a clinic down the street,&#8221;\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a class=\"ga ga-ext\" style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/ford-comments-ontario-emergency-rooms-1.7466415?utm_source=torontotoday.ca&amp;utm_campaign=torontotoday.ca%3A%20outbound&amp;utm_medium=referral\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noopener\" data-ga-category=\"OutboundLink\" data-ga-action=\"OutboundLink\" data-ga-label=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/ford-comments-ontario-emergency-rooms-1.7466415\">said<\/a><\/span>\u00a0Ford, claiming that an ER doctor told him 50 per cent of patients &#8220;shouldn&#8217;t be there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>CUPE leaders said all of Ontario\u2019s hospitals will garner a combined deficit of over $800 million this year and called for a $2-billion provincial investment to shore up their finances.<\/p>\n<p>This would\u00a0allow emergency rooms to relocate patients from stretchers and into hospital beds, and eliminate the long wait list for surgeries, Hurley argued.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, Ontario\u2019s budget included $85 billion in health spending.<\/p>\n<p>Some union members said the alleged 750 job cuts have only increased concern that the Ford government \u2014 which will face voters on Thursday \u2014 could push for the privatization of health care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFord and his Minister of Health Sylvia Jones have opened the doors wide for privatization,\u201d said Michelle Robidoux, a spokesperson with the Greater Toronto Health Coalition.
