{"id":30317,"date":"2025-02-24T18:28:41","date_gmt":"2025-02-24T23:28:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/?p=30317"},"modified":"2025-02-26T15:36:02","modified_gmt":"2025-02-26T20:36:02","slug":"how-doug-fords-policies-are-damaging-ontarios-healthcare-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/how-doug-fords-policies-are-damaging-ontarios-healthcare-system\/","title":{"rendered":"How Doug Ford\u2019s Policies Are Damaging Ontario\u2019s Healthcare System"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(February 24, 2025)<\/p>\n<p>By: Rumneek Johal, PressProgress<\/p>\n<p>Ontario patients are suffering from hallway medicine, nursing shortages, chronic underfunding and more under Doug Ford<\/p>\n<p>ANALYSIS<br \/>\nHow Doug Ford\u2019s Policies Are Damaging Ontario\u2019s Healthcare System<br \/>\nOntario patients are suffering from hallway medicine, nursing shortages, chronic underfunding and more under Doug Ford<\/p>\n<p>by Rumneek Johal, Reporter<br \/>\nFebruary 24, 2025<br \/>\nIn the final days of Ontario PC leader Doug Ford\u2019s <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/pressprogress.ca\/new-poll-finds-majority-of-ontarians-reject-doug-fords-reason-for-calling-an-early-election\/\">unnecessary snap election<\/a>,<\/span> Ontario\u2019s healthcare crisis ranks as <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ipsos.com\/en-ca\/healthcare-tops-voting-concerns-ontario-election\">the number one issue for voters.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The \u201ccrisis in healthcare,\u201d as health experts themselves describe it, only appears to be deepening as another facility in Ontario announced Monday it was cutting jobs due to \u201cprovincial underfunding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a statement Monday, Ontario Council of Hospital Unions President Michael Hurley announced, \u201c750 positions will be cut at Unity Health Toronto due to provincial underfunding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recent cuts are just one of many issues currently plaguing Ontario\u2019s health care system. Here\u2019s a list of ways Ford has failed to meet his many healthcare promises and contributed to the crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Hallway medicine at its worst<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, OCHU-CUPE also highlighted the fact that under Ford, hallway medicine is worse now than ever before \u2014 with the number of patients on stretchers in hallways\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pressprogress.ca\/hallway-medicine-endless-wait-times-overworked-staff-ontarios-healthcare-system-is-facing-its-worst-crisis-ever\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">increasing more than 125%<\/span>\u00a0<\/a>since Ford first promised to\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/doug-ford-ontario-hallway-medicine-hospital-overcrowding-1.5440470\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cend hallway medicine\u201d<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>In 2025, 2,000 people reportedly received treatment on stretchers in hallways because there are not enough hospital beds, according to OCHU-CUPE.<\/p>\n<p>Family doctor shortage worsens<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, Ontario is also experiencing a health care worker shortage, and\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stopforprofithealthcare.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2.5 million Ontarians do not have a family doctor.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In 2016, before the Ford government was elected, this number was closer to 1.3 million. Experts say that the crisis could only get worse if the government does not take decisive action.<\/p>\n<p>According to the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stopforprofithealthcare.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ontario Health Coalition<\/a><\/span>, by 2024, \u201cone in five local emergency departments have experienced closures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shortage of nurses and investment in private healthcare<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/pressprogress.ca\/ontario-is-facing-a-nursing-crisis-under-doug-fords-government\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">province is also \u201c25,000 nurses short,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>meaning health care workers who are still working in the system are overworked and under resourced.<\/p>\n<p>Erin Ariss, provincial president of the Ontario Nurse\u2019s Association, says the Ford government\u2019s under-spending on public health care and simultaneous investment in private services has further contributed to the crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not in the best interest of Ontarians to privatize our system. It\u2019s in the best interest to spend the money that this government has budgeted and invest in the system that we have,\u201d Ariss told\u00a0<i>PressProgress.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Chronic underfunding and misleading Ontarians<\/p>\n<p>During the final leaders\u2019 debate last week, Ford made\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/pressprogress.ca\/doug-ford-claims-hes-made-the-biggest-healthcare-investments-in-the-history-of-the-country-nurses-say-thats-misleading\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">big claims about investments in healthcare,<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>stating that he\u2019s made \u201cthe biggest investments in healthcare in the history of the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, Ontario\u2019s financial accountability office notes the province had the lowest health spending in Canada in 2022-2023\u2014to the tune of over $1 billion.<\/p>\n<p>According to the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stopforprofithealthcare.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ontario Health Coalition<\/a>,<\/span> per capita, \u201cOntario funds public health care at the lowest rate in Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ford also made claims that his government has helped hire more nurses, but\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/nurses-ontario-report-employment-1.6886244\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more nurses are also leaving the profession<\/a><\/span>\u00a0due to unmanageable working conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Long Term Care beds no where near promised<\/p>\n<p>Nearly\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oltca.com\/about-long-term-care\/the-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">48,000 people in Ontario are waiting for long term care<\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u2013a number that has doubled in the last 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>Long term care staff say Ford has\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/cupe.ca\/ontario-pcs-failure-make-care-vulnerable-residents-better-key-ballot-box-issue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cfailed to deliver,\u201d<\/a><\/span>\u00a0on promises to fix gaps in care and staffing at LTC facilities in Ontario.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the rate they are going, it will take 125 years to add the 30,000 beds they promised by 2028. Working conditions have not improved, we are chronically understaffed. The PCs are falling far short,\u201d Jason Harasymchuk, a Sudbury registered practical nurse, speaking on behalf of CUPE 1182 said in a release.<\/p>\n<p>During the COVID-19 pandemic, long term care in Ontario was in a huge crisis, in part as a result of Ford\u2019s inaction. Ontario\u2019s Auditor General said Ford\u2019s government failed to provide\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/pressprogress.ca\/auditor-general-releases-damning-report-detailing-how-doug-fords-government-mismanaged-covid-19-response\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cadequate funding and resources for public health.\u201d<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Gutting harm reduction services<\/p>\n<p>The Ford government also\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/toronto\/article\/ontario-premier-defends-plan-to-close-10-supervised-drug-consumption-sites-despite-experts-calling-for-more-to-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">closed a number of safe consumption sites across the province<\/a><\/span>\u00a0last year, despite calls from experts that more are needed.<\/p>\n<p>The Ontario PC government also tabled a bill which would make it\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/ontario-consumption-site-ford-1.7386562\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more difficult to open new sites<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>in the province, as well.
