{"id":31284,"date":"2026-03-13T14:54:30","date_gmt":"2026-03-13T18:54:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/?p=31284"},"modified":"2026-03-13T14:54:30","modified_gmt":"2026-03-13T18:54:30","slug":"release-health-coalition-demands-disclosures-end-to-grifols-for-profit-blood-plasma-contract-following-reports-of-deaths-harm-non-compliance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/release-health-coalition-demands-disclosures-end-to-grifols-for-profit-blood-plasma-contract-following-reports-of-deaths-harm-non-compliance\/","title":{"rendered":"<FONT COLOR=\"#E00000\">RELEASE:<\/FONT> Health Coalition demands disclosures &#038; end to Grifols\u2019 for-profit blood plasma contract following reports of deaths, harm, non-compliance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(March 13, 2026)<\/p>\n<p>Toronto \u2013 The Ontario and Manitoba Health Coalitions held a press conference this morning to respond to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/manitoba\/2-people-die-after-fatal-adverse-reactions-while-giving-plasma-in-winnipeg-health-canada-9.7122868\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">report from CBC<\/span><\/a>\u00a0about two patients who died in Winnipeg after having their blood plasma harvested at centres owned by for-profit pharmaceutical corporation Grifols.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/lite\/story\/9.7124579\">Another report followed, of a man who is suing<\/a><\/span>,\u00a0alleging kidney damage from equipment failure while having his plasma harvested at a Grifols centre. The Alberta Friends of Medicare\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.friendsofmedicare.org\/forprofit_plasma_deaths\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">revealed that Grifols has been found non-compliant<\/span><\/a>\u00a0with serious breaches at their Calgary centre. Inspection reports from Health Canada\u00a0show that four Grifols centres have been found non-compliant in <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.drug-inspections.canada.ca\/blood\/fullReportCard-en.html?lang=en&amp;insNumber=88096\">Calgary<\/a><\/span>, Alberta; <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.drug-inspections.canada.ca\/blood\/fullReportCard-en.html?lang=en&amp;insNumber=78730\">St. John<\/a>,<\/span> New Brunswick; and <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.drug-inspections.canada.ca\/blood\/fullReportCard-en.html?lang=en&amp;insNumber=88305\">Regina<\/a><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.drug-inspections.canada.ca\/blood\/fullReportCard-en.html?lang=en&amp;insNumber=82227\">Saskatoon<\/a><\/span>, Saskatchewan.<\/p>\n<p>The Ontario Health Coalition supported the Manitoba Health Coalition\u2019s call today for a judicial inquest in Manitoba which would result in investigations that are independent of Health Canada and Canadian Blood Services (CBS).<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the Ontario Health Coalition called for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>CBS to disclose the terms of the contract between CBS and Grifols<\/li>\n<li>Health Canada and CBS to report what, if any, the consequences have been for Grifols for non-compliance, disclosure of the full compliance reports, and any other adverse events that have occurred for people whose plasma has been harvested at Grifols centres<\/li>\n<li>Health Canada to disclose whether the Ontario Grifols centres have been inspected since they have opened and begun operating<\/li>\n<li>Health Canada to disclose the frequency of plasma harvesting for the people who have died.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Ontario Health Coalition also called for Canadian Blood Services to end its contract with Grifols and expand the voluntary public donation system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not allow for-profit companies to harvest human organs and sell them. It crosses a moral line that is held for good reason. Commodification results in unacceptable exploitation, harm, safety issues and inequities,\u201d said Natalie Mehra, executive director of the Ontario Health Coalition. \u201cThe same principle applies to human blood. We are calling on our provincial government, CBS and Health Canada to expand and protect the voluntary public blood &#8211; and plasma &#8211; donation system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe inspection reports showing non-compliance at Grifols\u2019 centres are shocking,\u201d said Geoff Cain, volunteer co-chair of the Coalition\u2019s Committee to Protect Ontario\u2019s Blood System. Geoff worked at Canadian Blood Services and is now retired. \u201cThe findings are deeply troubling. They show fail after fail after fail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under Ontario\u2019s Liberal government in 2014, advocates for a safe public blood supply won\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/laws\/statute\/14v14\">legislation to ban paid plasma<\/a><\/span>. The ban is in keeping with the recommendations of the <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/publications.gc.ca\/site\/eng\/9.698032\/publication.html\">Krever Commission<\/a><\/span> into the tainted blood scandal that resulted in the deaths of approximately 8,000 people. The <em>Voluntary Blood Donations Act<\/em> has an exception that allows Canadian Blood Services (CBS), the non-profit that manages the blood system in Canada outside of Quebec, to pay \u201cdonors\u201d if needed.<\/p>\n<p>However, there is no clause in the legislation that enables CBS to contract a for-profit corporation to do so, Cain noted, and the exception for CBS was made so that in time of crisis CBS could pay for blood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not the case now,\u201d he said. \u201cThere is no agency clause that allows Canadian Blood Services to contract a for-profit pharmaceutical company to buy and sell blood products. The Ford government must comply with the law and stop for-profit paid plasma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the <em>Voluntary Blood Donations Act<\/em>, in 2022, CBS signed a 15-year contract with Grifols and the Ford government has allowed them to set up paid plasma centres in Ontario.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/release-health-coalitions-denounce-for-profit-deal-by-canadian-blood-services-that-endangers-canadas-blood-supply\/\">Health Coalitions across Canada opposed the contract<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>and called for the voluntary public donation system to be expanded and protected. Nevertheless, Health Canada approved Grifols to take plasma from a single donor as often as 104 times per year &#8212; double the frequency that CBS is allowed to take blood.<\/p>\n<p>Sara Labelle, a medical laboratory technologist and volunteer co-chair with Cain of the Health Coalition\u2019s committee described the process for harvesting plasma. Blood is taken from the \u201cdonor\u201d, the plasma is removed and the red and white blood cells and platelets are returned into the person\u2019s blood stream. She noted that donating plasma is safe but large studies raise concerns about frequent taking of plasma which includes iron and immunoglobulins along with other proteins and nutrients. \u201cThe evidence raises concerns for the very frequent removal of plasma, and that would be compounded for people who are poor and less healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t allow for-profit companies to buy and sell kidneys to make money,\u201d concluded Labelle. \u201cWhen there is a shortage, the solution is a public campaign to get workplaces to arrange donation drives, and public advertising and education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grifols has been\u00a0advertising in Ontario that people can make $6,890 per year for &#8220;donating&#8221; plasma. They are\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/toronto-paid-plasma-clinics-lure-residents-with-super-hero-loyalty-program-and-cash-bonuses-2\/#:~:text=A%20payment%20system%20that%20rewards,giving%20plasma%20twice%20per%20week.\">giving bonuses to people who donate very frequently<\/a><\/span>.\u00a0Cain, who has spoken to people going into Grifols collection centres, found that they are low income and desperate, selling their plasma for money, not altruism or patient need. His findings are supported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.torontotoday.ca\/local\/health\/torontonians-selling-blood-plasma-grifols-11638352\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">media investigations<\/span><\/a> into the centres.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the opening of the Canadian for-profit plasma centres, Grifols was controversial for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasmonthly.com\/news-politics\/mexicans-plasma-donations-border\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">setting up collection centres near the Mexican border in Texas<\/span><\/a>, close to where low income people work in maquiladoras on the Mexican side.
