Brampton residents want faster care, and more local health care services and infrastructure closer to home, according to a recent poll.<\/p>\n

The City of Brampton held two telephone town hall meetings last month, with one focused on community safety and the other on health care concerns.<\/p>\n

The health care session on April 30 gave residents a chance to hear updates on efforts to expand local health services and to connect with representatives from the city, Toronto Metropolitan University, and the William Osler Health System.<\/p>\n

More than 6,600 households tuned in to the meeting, and a survey found nearly all of those attendees feel an urgent need to finish construction on Brampton\u2019s second hospital.<\/p>\n

\u201cResidents were clear about what they need: faster access to care, more services closer to home and health care infrastructure built for a large city,\u201d the city said of the poll results.<\/p>\n

The city says 96 per cent of respondents said completing the Peel Memorial Centre upgrade project is \u201cextremely urgent,\u201d while 94 per cent \u201cfully support\u201d Brampton\u2019s spending on TMU\u2019s new Brampton School of Medicine.<\/p>\n

The Peel Memorial upgrades will include a new 24\/7 emergency department, 250 inpatient beds with space for more beds in the future, rehabilitation and complex continuing care services, a cancer centre, enhanced mental health and addictions services, among others.<\/p>\n

In 2023, council gifted the $48 million Bramalea Civic Centre building and most of the surrounding land to TMU for the school \u2013 a move that led to the eviction of the Chinguacousy library branch, which upset many Brampton residents.<\/p>\n

TMU has also opened Integrated Health Centre clinics in Brampton<\/span><\/a>, one at the School of Medicine in the former Bramalea Civic Centre at 150 Central Park Drive and another in downtown Brampton at 74 Queen Street West.<\/p>\n

Over 90 per cent of respondents said they also support council\u2019s efforts to bring a Regional Cancer Care Centre to Brampton, while some 35 per cent of residents at the town hall said long wait times in emergency rooms are their biggest health care priority.<\/p>\n

In past years, health care advocates have called out Brampton for \u201cHallway Healthcare,\u201d with the Ontario Health Coalition saying in 2024 that the city is desperately lacking health care capacity, with just over 600 hospital beds for the more than 800,000 residents of Brampton and Caledon.<\/p>\n
