In addition to their bags, these passengers will be carrying a key message for the government of Ontario: \u201cStop Ford\u2019s hospital privatization train wreck.\u201d Organized by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Ontario Health Coalition<\/span><\/a>, attendees expected from as far as Ottawa and Kingston. The train-themed rally aims to drive home the message that Doug Ford\u2019s privatization agenda has gone completely off the rails.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Healthcare in crisis<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Relentless defunding of public health care has been a hallmark of the Progressive Conservative government over the last eight years. Ontario has endured a tactical dismantling of health services resulting in mounting emergency room <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cp24.com\/local\/toronto\/2026\/05\/11\/under-immense-strain-wait-times-at-ontario-emergency-rooms-have-spiked-over-past-5-years-study-says\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">wait times<\/span><\/a>, nursing <a href=\"https:\/\/ona.org\/campaign\/bill-124\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">wage freezes<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/canada\/article\/hundreds-of-health-care-jobs-cut-in-ontario-since-january-union-says-amid-concerns-over-nurse-shortages\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">layoffs<\/span><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/document\/hallway-health-care-system-under-strain\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">hallway medicine<\/span><\/a> run rampant. Ontario now has the lowest per capita health care funding of any province in the country. The majority of Ontario\u2019s 136 hospitals have been running at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.policyalternatives.ca\/news-research\/failure-by-design-ontarios-deepening-hospital-funding-crisis\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">operating deficits<\/span><\/a> for the past three years, despite having the smallest ratio of hospital beds and hospital staff per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.policyalternatives.ca\/news-research\/failure-by-design-ontarios-deepening-hospital-funding-crisis\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">patient<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In classic conservative fashion, Ford himself has enlisted so-called \u201cpolicy solutions\u201d to the crisis he created with this slash-and-burn approach. While his left hand has been <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/sudbury\/hospital-closures-doctor-shortage-emergency-room-north-shore-9.7025631\">shuttering rural emergency rooms<\/a><\/span>, his right has opened the door for a suite of private health services to set up shop. Under his privatization agenda, more than a billion dollars per year in public funding has been re-directed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">for-profit corporations<\/span><\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.policyalternatives.ca\/news-research\/ontario-is-underfunding-public-health-care-and-private-health-care-is-the-beneficiary\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">\u201cprivate pay\u201d health care<\/span><\/a> providers. Increasing numbers of surgeries and procedures are now delivered at (publicly funded) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/provincial\/ford-government-to-allow-some-private-clinics-to-do-hip-and-knee-replacements\/article_d3c8b4e7-a6f0-4089-95a4-c8039a167fbf.html\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">private clinics<\/span><\/a>, with the province announcing an investment of 155 million taxpayer dollars toward the creation of 57 new centres for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/ontario-surgical-diagnostic-centres-1.7572535\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">diagnostic and endoscopic services<\/span><\/a> last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Advancing privatization<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Ontarians become increasingly frustrated and disillusioned by jockeying for basic health services, private options might sound like a tantalizing fix for those who can pay out-of-pocket. Unfortunately, all evidence points toward catastrophe. Private health care services cost taxpayers substantially <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/release-report-health-coalition-exposes-significantly-higher-costs-irregularities-in-kingston-hospital-cataract-surgery-privatization-new-report\/\">more<\/a> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/release-report-health-coalition-exposes-significantly-higher-costs-irregularities-in-kingston-hospital-cataract-surgery-privatization-new-report\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">than<\/span><\/a> public ones; in fact, they have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/ontario-doug-ford-private-clinic-surgeries-fees-hospitals-1.7026926\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">already<\/span><\/a> cost Ontarian taxpayers more than their public counterparts. Two-tier style health care also leads to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadiandoctorsformedicare.ca\/myth_privatization\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">longer wait times<\/span><\/a> for services and <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/montreal\/article\/experts-concerned-that-privatization-of-health-care-could-increase-mortality-rates\/\">startlingly<\/a> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmaj.ca\/content\/166\/11\/1399.long\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">worse patient outcomes<\/span><\/a>. This was most evident when looking at the\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/uwaterloo.ca\/news\/media\/private-equity-long-term-care-homes-have-highest-mortality\">increased mortality rates<\/a> in private versus public care homes. Private services are subject to <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/opinion\/contributors\/2023\/04\/06\/new-rules-to-shield-private-clinics-from-public-scrutiny.html\">less public accountability and oversight<\/a><\/span>, and, at their worst, have proven to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/release-report-illegal-unlawful-and-unethical-case-studies-of-patients-charged-for-medical-care-in-ontarios-private-clinics\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">predatory<\/span><\/a> against the <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canadiandoctorsformedicare.ca\/myth_privatization\">most vulnerable patient<\/a>s<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ford might be feeling emboldened by recent developments in Alberta. Two steps ahead in the conservative race to the bottom, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.policyalternatives.ca\/news-research\/the-end-of-canadian-medicare-alberta-legislation-opens-the-door-to-u-s-health-care\/\">the death knell for medicare <\/a>is echoing throughout that province since the passing of Bill 11 by <a href=\"https:\/\/canadians.org\/analysis\/giants-unleash-attack-on-healthcare\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Danielle Smith and her band of insurance giants<\/span><\/a>. Introducing an American-style two-tier system, physicians and for-profit facilities can now, for the first time since the <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/thecanadianencyclopedia.ca\/en\/article\/health-policy\">Medical Care Act <\/a><\/span>of 1968, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.policyalternatives.ca\/news-research\/the-end-of-canadian-medicare-alberta-legislation-opens-the-door-to-u-s-health-care\/#5-bill-11-unbundles-hospital-care-and-opens-the-door-for-user-fees\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">charge patients for medically necessary health care<\/span><\/a>. With Canadian insurance corporations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cowangroup.ca\/blog\/how-albertas-bill-11-will-affect-employer-sponsored-benefits\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">already preparing<\/span><\/a> to sell products in this new private health insurance market, this sets a dangerous precedent for the rest of the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alberta\u2019s Bill 11 is in direct contravention of the <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcoalition.ca\/what-are-the-5-principles-of-the-canada-health-act\/\">Canada Health Act<\/a><\/span>, the law that ties federal health funding to the provision of universal, public services by the provinces. <a href=\"https:\/\/laws-lois.justice.gc.ca\/eng\/acts\/c-6\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">The act<\/span><\/a> stipulates that single-payer health insurance plans must be administered and operated on a non-profit basis by public authorities (the provinces) and cover all medically necessary services to 100% of the population across the country. Yet, despite Smith\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/breachmedia.ca\/danielle-smith-admitted-she-wants-to-throw-out-canadas-public-health-care-law\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">flagrant disregard for federal law<\/span><\/a>, and country-wide outcry from experts and advocates about Bill 11, Mark Carney has, as yet, done nothing to enforce the federal legislation and remained deafeningly quiet on the subject.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Resisting the attacks on healthcare<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Public healthcare workers and advocates are refusing to take these attacks lying down. Earlier this month the Ontario Nurses Association (ONA), the union for Ontario\u2019s nurses and other allied health professions, announced they would be <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/ona.org\/news\/20260511-hldaa-charter-challenge\/\">launching a constitutional challenge<\/a><\/span> with the aim of striking down the Hospital Labour Disputes Arbitration Act, which has long inhibited them from undertaking meaningful job action such as labour strikes. Reasserting the right to strike would give healthcare workers a powerful weapon to defend public healthcare and their working conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ontario Health Coalition, for their part, is refusing to let Ford off the hook. \u201cObjectively, our health care has never been in such crisis and disarray as it is now\u201d, Natalie Mehra, executive director of the Coalition stated in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/ford-governments-primary-care-announcement-plays-politics-with-peoples-need-for-a-family-doctor-its-a-primary-care-plan-to-implement-a-plan-delayed-until\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">media release<\/span><\/a>. \u201cWhile driving our public system into crisis, the Ford government has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/final-report-harm-to-public-hospitals-of-privatization.pdf\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">shifted billions of dollars in public funding to for-profit privatization<\/span><\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With delegations from across the labour sector promising to join the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/\">rally next Thursday<\/a>, the OHC, which represents more than 500 member organizations across the province, is promising to continue the fight for universal public health care.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/springmag.ca\/stopping-fords-hospital-privatization-train-wreck\">Click here for the original article<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(May 22, 2026) By: Laura Merdsoy, Spring On Thursday, May 28, thousands of Ontarians will be taking to the rails and converging on Union Station in downtown Toronto.
