Grifols has been allowed to come in and privatize plasma collection and pay \u201cdonors\u201d despite huge fightback because of <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.torontotoday.ca\/local\/health\/toronto-paid-plasma-clinics-lure-residents-loyalty-program-cash-bonuses-11645304\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">exploiting the poor and desperate<\/a><\/span> to sell their blood and because it brings new risks to the safety of the blood system. We have been fighting to get the Ford government to uphold the law in Ontario which bans paid plasma.<\/p>\n<p>We worked with Will Trial Lawyers, among other lawyers and law firms, during the pandemic to advocate for people who died and suffered in for-profit long-term care homes. They are a personal injury law firm.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Week after week, the revelations about Grifols just keep getting worse. First, it was two deaths after people gave plasma in their facilities. Then, it was more non-compliant inspections than all other blood and plasma centres in Canada combined. Now, not only have they risked the safety of the donors by failing to follow standards from top to bottom of their operations, but they have also imperilled the safety of the blood system itself by taking plasma from donors who should have been screened out due to risk of exposure to serious illness,&#8221; said Natalie Mehra, executive director of the Ontario Health Coalition.<\/p>\n<p>She stated, &#8220;We are beyond the tipping point. This company must be stopped. Health Canada must withdraw their approval for Grifols to operate in Canada. The Ford government must uphold the law and stop for-profit paid plasma in our province. And Canadian Blood Services (CBS) must cancel its contract with Grifols.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Keep reading to learn more about Grifols. There will be more media stories to come.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1>Who is Grifols and what are they doing?<\/h1>\n<p>Grifols is a for-profit multinational corporation to which Canadian Blood Services has given a <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/article-spains-grifols-to-acquire-lone-canadian-plasma-collector-to-fulfill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">15-year monopoly contract<\/a><\/span> to extract plasma and manufacture plasma-derived products from Canadians. Health Canada has approved Grifols to operate in Canada and take plasma at <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.torontotoday.ca\/local\/health\/for-profit-company-approved-to-extract-plasma-double-the-rate-of-canadian-blood-services-11704417\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">double the rate<\/a><\/span> that Canadian Blood Services does.<\/p>\n<p>The contract is controversial due to Grifols\u2019 practices, including offering <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.torontotoday.ca\/local\/health\/toronto-paid-plasma-clinics-lure-residents-loyalty-program-cash-bonuses-11645304\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">financial incentives<\/a><\/span> to donors to donate frequently and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/new-brunswick\/blood-donors-surprised-canadian-plasma-sold-abroad-1.7628893\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">selling products<\/span><\/a> derived from Canadians\u2019 plasma on the international market. Two people died after having their plasma harvested at Grifols\u2019 centres and others have reported hospitalizations.<\/p>\n<p>Ontario has a <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/laws\/statute\/14v14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Voluntary Blood Donations Act (2014)<\/a><\/span> that bans paid plasma by private entities, but Grifols has been allowed to operate in this province by the Ford government regardless. The Ontario Act does not contain any agency clause \u201cloophole\u201d allowing Canadian Blood Services to contract Grifols to buy and sell plasma in this province legally. Despite this, the Ford government has allowed Grifols to set up shop and open five plasma collection centres in Ontario (listed on their website) and they plan to open more.<\/p>\n<p>Canadian Blood Services, Health Canada, and the Ford government have continued to allow Grifols to operate despite numerous serious issues of non-compliance in inspections. Currently, British Columbia and Quebec ban paid plasma by provincial law and Newfoundland and PEI have no paid plasma centres.<\/p>\n<p>The non-profit Canadian Blood Services and their Quebec counterpart, H\u00e9ma-Qu\u00e9bec, do not engage in paid plasma from donors because it is unethical and they were founded on the principle of a voluntary blood system coming out of the Krever Commission following the tainted blood scandal. Selling our plasma to a giant for-profit corporation is a complete departure from that principle.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><strong>Deaths and hospitalization after plasma donation<\/strong><\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li>Over the past ten months, <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/manitoba\/2-people-die-after-fatal-adverse-reactions-while-giving-plasma-in-winnipeg-health-canada-9.7122868\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">two people have died<\/a><\/span> after having their plasma harvested at Grifols centres in Winnipeg. One was 22-year-old Rodiyat Alabede, a Nigerian international student who studied at the University of Winnipeg to become a social worker. She suffered a fatal cardiac arrest after the machine collecting her plasma issued five alerts. Grifols staff finally stopped the procedure after the last alert. But according to <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/manitoba\/grifols-alerts-plasma-death-winnipeg-9.7230724\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Health Canada documents<\/a><\/span>, the procedure should have stopped when one of the earlier alerts (about the amount of pressure in her vein) sounded. Grifols did not follow this standard of practice. Also, Grifols <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/manitoba\/plasma-donors-serious-adverse-reactions-9.7241064\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">did not disclose the five alerts<\/a><\/span> in its initial report to Health Canada.<\/li>\n<li>In 2023, Craig Loney reported <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/manitoba\/grifols-plasma-donation-lawsuit-winnipeg-9.7124579\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">serious non-reversible kidney damage<\/a><\/span> after having his plasma harvested at the same centre in which Alabede&#8217;s heart stopped. He is <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/economy\/article-health-canada-grifols-plasma-winnipeg\/?utm_source=torontotoday.ca&amp;utm_campaign=torontotoday.ca%3A%20outbound&amp;utm_medium=referral\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">suing<\/a><\/span> Grifols\/Canadian Plasma Resources Corporation.<\/li>\n<li>At that same Winnipeg centre, another donor was hospitalized in July 2025 because they \u201c<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/manitoba\/plasma-donors-serious-adverse-reactions-9.7241064\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lost consciousness<\/a><\/span> for a prolonged period, sustained a phlebotomy-related injury and had a complicated hematoma\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Alisha Friedt in Hamilton <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thespec.com\/news\/hamilton-region\/plasma-grifols-blood-donation\/article_2cffa016-ec20-5b67-8a63-fe071717ae86.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">became ill and was hospitalized<\/span><\/a> 72 hours after having her plasma harvested at a Grifols centre in July 2025.<\/li>\n<li>Over the last decade, <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/manitoba\/plasma-donors-serious-adverse-reactions-9.7241064\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">25 of the 27 serious adverse reactions<\/a><\/span> reported after plasma donation in Canada took place in facilities that are currently owned and operated by Grifols. People were left in life-threatening condition, hospitalized, or required other medical intervention. There were no serious adverse reactions in public\/non-profit Canadian Blood Services facilities. Between 2023 and 2025, Grifols acquired a number of facilities previously operated by for-profit Canadian Plasma Resources.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1>History of failed inspections<\/h1>\n<p>Since entering Canada, Grifols centres have received a remarkable number of non-compliant inspection reports in cities from Winnipeg, Calgary, Regina, Saskatoon, and Oakville to St. John\u2019s. The reports include failure to screen donors properly, failure to respond to adverse events properly, failure to report properly, failure to maintain their equipment properly, and more.<\/p>\n<p>On March 26, Grifols had been <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.torontotoday.ca\/local\/health\/grifols-inspection-head-office-found-deficiencies-health-canada-plasma-12062131?utm_source=Canadian+Health+Coalition&amp;utm_campaign=fa76a17a01-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2026_03_02_06_49_COPY_01&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_-03142aa61f-&amp;utm_source=Canadian+Health+Coalition&amp;utm_campaign=fa76a17a01-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2026_03_02_06_49_COPY_01&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_-03142aa61f-#google_vignette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">found non-compliant more times<\/a><\/span> in its three years of existence in Canada than all other blood and plasma facilities across the country have in the last 14 years.<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/article-health-canada-issues-grifols-winnipeg-inspector-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">in-depth inspection<\/span><\/a> of the Winnipeg centre in which Alabede had her plasma harvested showed Grifols had failed to attach the tubing correctly on at least one of their plasma collection machines. They failed to stop the machines when alarms went off or instead restarted them when they should not have done so. Staff were poorly trained and allowed to take and fail the same test with the same questions in the same order four times. No supervisors were on site. Following the deaths, Grifols failed to inform the public of any concerns (in fact, quite the opposite) until the media exposed them.<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of the July 13 press conference was to discuss patients&#8217; legal rights, the importance of reporting adverse events, and measures that can strengthen public confidence in Canada&#8217;s blood and plasma systems.
