A Thousand People Rally to Send Strong Message to Wynne Government:
\n\u201cStop the Devastating Cuts to Local Hospitals\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Monday, the Northeastern Ontario Day of Action<\/em>, organized by the Ontario Health Coalition and the North Bay Health Coalition, brought together patients, seniors, health advocates, hospital workers and local citizens to address the devastating hospital cuts that are affecting Northern Ontario towns. With the attendance of 1000 people all speaking in unity, the rally sent a strong message to Ontario\u2019s government: the hospital cuts have gone too far; they need to be stopped and services restored to meet our communities\u2019 needs.<\/p>\n

\u201cAccess to health care should not depend on the size of your wallet,\u201d said Sara Labelle, an Executive Board Member of OPSEU, speaking from the stage framed by North Bay\u2019s \u201cGateway to the North\u201d sign. Services cut from local hospitals are privatized to for-profit clinics that only take the easiest patients, leaving heavier care patients behind with fewer resources, less funding and less staff in local hospitals, she told the crowd.<\/p>\n

In a visual parade of cuts, concerned citizens, seniors, advocates, nurses, health professionals and hospital workers lined up to show the crowd the devastating list of hospital services that the region has lost year after year. The cuts announced in recent years include: more than 150 front-line positions including nursing, hospital support and health professionals at the North Bay Hospital, which equals a cut of more than a quarter-million hours of patient care per year; dozens of hospital beds, services across the hospital and more than 85,000 hours per year of front-line nursing, health professionals, and hospital support in Sudbury;
\n56 beds in Sault Ste. Marie; 36 complex continuing care, rehab and palliative care beds in Midland\/Penetanguishene on top of all inpatient hospital services being closed in Penetanguishene; 10% of the workforce and 50% of operating room time at risk of being cut in Timiskaming; an threat to completely close the Huntsville hospital or close the operating rooms.<\/p>\n

Ontario has now fallen to last place in terms of hospital funding in Canada. Addressing this, CUPE National President Mark Hancock asked, \u201cIs there any reason why Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia should have better hospital services than Ontario?\u201d, to which the crowd responded with a resounding no.<\/p>\n

Lana Brown, a local patient, talked about the important of hospitals to mental health services and how hospital cuts threaten the access to mental health services, \u201cWe need to support our hospitals!\u201d<\/p>\n

Marie Kelly, CEO of the Ontario Nurses\u2019 Association, warned the crowd against the dangers of the hospital cuts, \u201cOntario has the second worst nurse-to-patient ratio in the country \u2013 cuts to nurses compromise and undermine patient safety.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gathered under the Gateway Arch at Lee Park, Michael Taylor, who is a caregiver for his two elderly parents and co-chair of the North Bay Health Coalition roused and led the crowd in chants, calling \u201cStop the cuts!\u201d. At times, the honks of support from the traffic passing by was so loud, the speakers could barely be heard.<\/p>\n

Michel Bisaillon, a local organizer without whom the rally would not have been possible, echoed a sense of hope to the crowd, \u201cWe are a community and family, and we need to take care of each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNorth Bay is losing dozens of hospital services and more than a hundred front-line staff,\u201d Natalie Mehra, Executive Director of the Ontario Health Coalition, said to the crowd, adding, \u201cIt can\u2019t go on any longer.\u201d She called upon the Ontario provincial government to restore hospital funding so that services and beds can be re-opened and the crisis of access to health care in the north be addressed.<\/p>\n
