The current bilateral deals pushed through by the federal government and some provinces and territories do not contain adequate funding and risk our national public health care system. Here is the joint statement issued today by the coalitions. The video of the press conference will be posted shortly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Canada\u2019s universal health care system requires federal vision and federal leadership. A health accord should unite the country in recommitting to our shared vision, encourage the scaling up of best practices, and implementing national standards to ensure that no matter where Canadians live they can access\u00a0high quality public health care\u00a0on equitable terms for all based on\u00a0our health system&#8217;s\u00a0foundational principles of equity and compassion.<\/p>\n<p>Given the current state of negotiations between the federal, provincial, and territorial governments, we, Canada\u2019s national, provincial and territorial health coalitions are deeply concerned\u00a0about the future of our universal, single-tier public health care system.\u00a0The\u00a0declining\u00a0share of federal funding for health care, included in the bilateral agreements that have been negotiated to date,\u00a0not only increases fiscal pressures on provinces that\u00a0will therefore\u00a0face significantly increased pressure to cut\u00a0needed\u00a0public health care services, but it also reduces the authority of the federal government in upholding national standards that\u00a0protect Canadians from user fees and extra-billing.\u00a0Bilateral agreements threaten the portability of medicare leaving a patchwork system where some services are public in some provinces or territories but not in others.<\/p>\n<p>We are appalled with Saskatchewan\u2019s announcement that they\u2019ve been given one-year to violate the Canada Health Act by continuing to allow two-tiered health care through\u00a0privatized for-profit\u00a0MRI scans. It is imperative that the Federal government\u00a0uphold\u00a0the Canada Health Act and\u00a0enact financial penalties to\u00a0Canada Health Transfer payments to Saskatchewan\u00a0and any other province that fails to protect its residents from user fees for needed health care\u00a0levied by\u00a0private clinics.<\/p>\n<p>A health accord is an opportunity for governments to come together to make our system more comprehensive and fair by expanding public health care to cover critical areas like prescription medication and seniors care\u00a0for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>This requires federal leadership\u00a0and cooperation.\u00a0Bilateral agreements are no way to build and promote an equitable national vision and move it forward.<\/p>\n<p>We are calling on the federal, provincial, territorial and First Nations governments to return to the negotiating table.<\/p>\n<p>To safeguard public health care for all, the federal government must agree to pay their fair share,\u00a0and\u00a0commit to meeting the real costs of health care.
