BRING YOUR LOCAL ORGANIZATION’S BANNER OR A HAND-MADE SIGN<\/p>\n

We are on the cusp of getting a Private Member’s bill passed to bring in a 4-hour minimum care standard for residents in long-term care homes (nursing homes, homes for the aged etc.). That there is not enough care has been the priority issue for residents’ groups, advocacy groups, families, unions, and health professionals. Everyone agrees.<\/p>\n

And now this Private Member’s Bill, introduced by NDP MPP France G\u00e9linas has passed 2nd Reading in the Legislature. This is really rare, and it means we have a good chance of winning this one! The Bill needs only to go to Third Reading and it will pass. The fact is that all MPPs are ashamed to vote against the minimum care standard, and are afraid to do so \u2013 when it\u2019s so close to June’s provincial election.<\/p>\n

WE NEED TO PRESSURE THEM NOW TO MAKE SURE BILL 33 GOES TO THIRD READING AND PASSES. WE CAN DO THIS.<\/p>\n

Improved care levels will make a world of difference for long-term care residents. They mean enough time to help bathe, groom and reposition\u200e residents so that they don’t get bedsores and they get up and dressed under compassionate conditions each day. Or enough time to feed them so that they don’t lose weight, get dehydrated and frail. Or enough time to talk with them so they get to socialize and not be too lonely. Or to get a proper bath and to go to the bathroom when they need to rather than sitting in soiled diapers. It’s enough time so that both the residents and staff don’t get hurt in such high numbers.<\/p>\n
