{"id":6114,"date":"2018-03-20T11:13:43","date_gmt":"2018-03-20T15:13:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/?p=6114"},"modified":"2020-05-15T15:22:36","modified_gmt":"2020-05-15T19:22:36","slug":"media-release-ohc-supports-public-dental-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/media-release-ohc-supports-public-dental-care\/","title":{"rendered":"<FONT COLOR=\"#E00000\">RELEASE: <\/FONT>OHC supports public dental care"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>(TORONTO)\u00a0 \u00a0\u201cA public dental plan, like public health care, is fundamentally about equity.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s about providing all people with the opportunity to live healthy, dignified lives, and fulfil their human potential.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0<em>Natalie Mehra, Executive Director OHC<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cPublic dental care to cover everyone is welcome news from NDP Leader Andrea Horwath,\u201d says Natalie Mehra, Executive Director of the Ontario Health Coalition. \u201cWe stand in full support of public dental care.\u00a0 Expanding the principles of Medicare to include dental care makes sense, it\u2019s long overdue.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Coalition takes issue with those who respond to the positive expansion of services that improve the quality of lives of Ontarians in the public interest. There is far too little critical response to unfactual and damaging statements about Ontarians not being able to afford these programs and services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must challenge head-on this notion that our society, one of the richest in the world, cannot afford to take care of each other like this.\u00a0 People are paying already for dental care \u2013 and they\u2019re paying more than they would through a publicly-administered non-profit plan \u2013 and getting less.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat <u>is<\/u> unaffordable for far too many of us is paying out-of-pocket when you are elderly without much income, or sick, or in an emergency.\u00a0 What the naysayers will never tell you is that Ontario has the lowest funding for all our public services of any province in Canada.\u00a0 There is considerable room to improve funding, even just to come up to the average of the rest of the country.\u00a0 This means the wealthy must pay their fair share, as they did in generations past.\u00a0 If we all contribute fairly, then we all will benefit fairly from the expanded services we all need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA public dental plan, like public health care, is fundamentally about equity.\u00a0 It\u2019s about providing all people with the opportunity to live healthy, dignified lives, and fulfil their human potential.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are pleased that Ontario\u2019s politicians are raising expectations of what government can do to improve lives and create a compassionate society.\u00a0 We are asking our supporters to speak out in support of this initiative, and of all the initiatives to bring a comprehensive and universal public drug coverage program for all Canadians, to push to rebuild our hospital capacity, to restore beds and services to meet people\u2019s needs, and to build up long-term care for Ontarians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can and must stop the dangerous trend of diminishing expectations, because these only hurt ordinary people and benefit the wealthiest, who no longer want to contribute their fair share,\u201d Mehra said.\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cWe can build upon the amazing public health system we currently have and expand it to fill in the gaps, redress backlogs and restore the vision of a comprehensive health system for all people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Dental-Care-release-Mar-20-2018.pdf\">Click here for Printable Version<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(TORONTO)\u00a0 \u00a0\u201cA public dental plan, like public health care, is fundamentally about equity.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s about providing all people with the opportunity to live healthy, dignified lives, and fulfil their human potential.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0Natalie Mehra, Executive Director OHC \u201cPublic dental care to cover everyone is welcome news from NDP Leader Andrea Horwath,\u201d says Natalie Mehra, Executive Director of [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[19],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-6114","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-whats-new"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
