THE CANADIAN PRESS\/ Tijana Martin<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-share clearfix\">\n<div class=\"share-links\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>TORONTO \u2014 Ontario\u2019s new premier has appointed a former Progressive Conservative party president as a special adviser on health care.<\/p>\n<p>Premier Doug Ford has named Dr. Rueben Devlin as chair of a new council on improving health care and ending so-called \u201challway medicine,\u201d a position that comes with a $348,000 salary plus paid expenses.<\/p>\n<p>In comparison, former Liberal premier Kathleen Wynne earned just under $209,000 last year, according to the province\u2019s annual list of public sector salaries.<\/p>\n<p>Devlin previously served as CEO of Humber River hospital, where Ford\u2019s brother, the late Rob Ford, was first admitted after he became ill in 2014. Devlin personally helped the family during that time.<\/p>\n<p>As hospital CEO, he made close to $500,000, according to the salaries list.<\/p>\n<p>The Tories, who campaigned on a promise of fiscal responsibility and respect for taxpayers\u2019 money, said this spring that Devlin had been tapped to help craft their health-care policies.<\/p>\n<p>Ford has also railed against executive salaries and, since becoming premier, has put public service managers under a wage freeze. He has also ordered a review of management and executive compensation in the public service.<\/p>\n<p>The Tory leader has also fired the province\u2019s chief scientist and, according to media reports, its chief investment officer and the premier\u2019s business adviser.<\/p>\n<p>Progressive Conservative legislator Lisa MacLeod defended Devlin\u2019s appointment and salary on Friday, saying the party had simply delivered on its campaign promise to hire him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were very clear on the campaign trail that we wanted to draw from his expertise in the health-care field and that his job will be reaching out to others throughout the world and in particular across North America and through Europe to see how we can best advance our health-care practices,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is going to be worth every penny, we\u2019re going to see that in the results.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Critics said the appointment raises red flags about the future of health care in the province.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe theme of Ford\u2019s early days in office has been backroom deals to benefit his wealthy friends, and nothing to actually fix health care,\u201d said NDP legislator France Gelinas.<\/p>\n<p>The Ontario Health Coalition, meanwhile, pointed to Devlin\u2019s tenure as party president during the Mike Harris administration, which saw major cuts to hospital spending.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe discussion now has to be about rebuilding capacity \u2014 reopening beds and (operating rooms), restoring funding \u2014 not centralizing, cutting, closing and privatization our local hospitals,\u201d Natalie Mehra, the coalition\u2019s executive director, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are deeply concerned and we are asking Mr. Ford to provide some reassurances about his plans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Devlin has also wielded some political influence within the party, leading the charge for a leadership review of then-leader John Tory after the 2007 provincial election.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/ipolitics.ca\/2018\/07\/06\/doug-ford-gives-ex-pc-president-job-as-health-adviser-with-350k-salary\/\">Click here for original article<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(July 6, 2018) By: The Canadian Press Ontario Premier Doug Ford picks former PC president as health advisor.
