{"id":8397,"date":"2019-10-08T13:52:44","date_gmt":"2019-10-08T17:52:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/?p=8397"},"modified":"2020-05-01T16:04:49","modified_gmt":"2020-05-01T20:04:49","slug":"ottawa-mayor-says-ford-agreed-in-meeting-to-not-cut-long-term-care-home-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/ottawa-mayor-says-ford-agreed-in-meeting-to-not-cut-long-term-care-home-funding\/","title":{"rendered":"Ottawa mayor says Ford agreed in meeting to not cut long-term care home funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(August 20, 2019)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>By: Victoria Gibson, iPolitics<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8398\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Oct.3107042-1024x702-300x206.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Oct.3107042-1024x702-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Oct.3107042-1024x702-768x527.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Oct.3107042-1024x702.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson poses for a photo in his office in Ottawa on Tuesday, October 31, 2017. iPolitics\/Matthew Usherwood<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A private meeting between Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson resulted in the premier agreeing that cuts should not be made to long-term care homes, Watson revealed to iPolitics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe were going to lose about $800,000 from the province for the four long-term care homes that we run,\u201d Watson said in an interview about the meeting \u2014 one of hundreds of liaisons between municipal and provincial representatives taking place this week at the Association of Municipalities of Ontario conference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watson claims that Ford agreed with his view about cuts in a conversation about the vulnerability of seniors in long-term care.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m hoping his comments \u2014 that he didn\u2019t think they should be cutting long-term care \u2014 follow through with a formal statement,\u201d Watson said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ontario Health Coalition raised alarms about cuts to long-term care last month, saying that the per diem rate had been increased by one per cent, which didn\u2019t meet the rate of inflation, and that special transition funds \u2014 impacting municipally-owned long-term care homes especially \u2014 had been cut.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome municipalities will lose hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding per year,\u201d the coalition warned in a public statement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ivana Yelich, a spokesperson for Ford, responded to an inquiry about the Premier\u2019s alleged comments by saying she wasn\u2019t privy to that specific discussion. However, she noted in an email that the Ontario government was putting $72 million more into the long-term care system compared to last year, and that Long-Term Care Minister Merrilee Fullerton committing in late July to new funding for the long-term care sector.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, Watson expressed concern to iPolitics about the \u201clack of information\u201d municipal leaders were working with around cuts and reductions. News emerged on Monday morning about changes to provincial funding for public health and child care, and while Ontario has pledged transitional funding to help municipalities adjust, Watson and others are still waiting for precise numbers. Premier Ford gave a speech at the conference after the news broke, but it did not reveal all the details.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey said they\u2019re going to be sending letters out. The sooner we get the letters with the specific numbers for each municipality, the better we\u2019re going to be to start our budget process,\u201d Watson said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Questions yet unanswered include how much money each municipality will receive, and how long the funding will last. \u201cA more efficient system would have been to have each municipality\u2019s letter available after the Premier\u2019s speech \u2014 to say alright, here\u2019s what we\u2019re talking about. Here are the numbers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cam Guthrie, who serves as both Mayor of Guelph and chair of the Large Urban Mayors\u2019 Caucus of Ontario, said he knew what he was \u201cgetting into\u201d when walking into the closed-door meetings with Ministers and provincial staff during the conference. \u201cIt\u2019s really an ask of either one or two priorities for the city, and we know that we aren\u2019t going to get an answer immediately across the table,\u201d he said.\u201d \u201cBut you can tell that they\u2019re asking the right questions, they\u2019re poking and prodding and going deeper to understand.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He said he\u2019d been reassured that his concerns would be followed up on by the province. \u201cBased on last year, whenever I heard any Ministers or staff say they were going to follow up, they always did,\u201d he noted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kingston Mayor Bryan Paterson lauded Ontario\u2019s Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Steve Clark in particular, saying he was \u201cgood to work with\u201d during the closed-door sessions in Ottawa. \u201cUltimately I think what encourages us is they\u2019re listening and we have a chance to express our concerns. We\u2019re certainly hoping that the concerns we\u2019re bringing forward now and the questions we\u2019re bringing forward are then reflected in the final policy changes that are brought down,\u201d he said in an interview.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think what surprised me is initially there was a lack of clarity about what exactly was being rolled out \u2026 that to me is always the key, understanding the details.
