(Leith Dunick, tbnewswatch.com)<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>THUNDER BAY \u2013 The situation in local long-term care facilities is dire, says a report produced in part by the Ontario Health Coalition.<\/p>\n<p>The document says residents at Thunder Bay\u2019s homes for the aged, 70 per cent of which are owned by for-profit corporations, are being shortchanged because of a lack of personal support workers and the refusal to date of the province to create legislation calling for at least four hours of care per resident per day.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s driving PSWs from the workforce, and despite a program locally offering to cover tuition costs to get the education needed to enter the field, it\u2019s tough to find enough people interested in taking the plunge and forging a new career path.<\/p>\n<p>Laurie Raslack says her mother entered a long-term care facility seven years ago and said she\u2019s noticed a dramatic drop in care in that time frame.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother had an open wound down to the bone\u00a0and her bandages weren\u2019t being changed,\u201d Raslack said on Monday, after the OHC released the 32-page Caring in Crisis: Ontario\u2019s Long-Term Care PSW Shortage report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe had three showers in a one-month period.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When her mother, who has since died, entered the facility, the PSWs would spend extra time with residents, especially those who had no family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSix years later, there is no talking. It\u2019s like a factory. It is a crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andy Savela, Unifor\u2019s director of health care, said they\u2019ve criss-crossed the province seeking input and it\u2019s virtually the same in every community \u2013 there just aren\u2019t enough personal support workers available.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe word\u2019s out,\u201d he said, \u201cIt\u2019s not only about compensation &#8230; It\u2019s more related to the demands being placed on PSWs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added it\u2019s time the province got serious about staff-to-patient ratios, which get worse when a PSW calls in sick.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not sustainable, Savela said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey leave work feeling disheartened at the end of the day, knowing if they had time they could do so much more. We\u2019re not using the word crisis here lightly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Staff shortages have become routine, which has led to some long-term care beds being left unused because there aren\u2019t enough qualified workers to look after additional people, many with chronic care needs and unable to do much for themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Often residents are left in bed all day, when staffing shortfalls leave a single PSW to handle the workload of two.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt really is atrocious,\u201d said Kari Jefford, president of Unifor Local 229.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFolks aren\u2019t even coming into the workplace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s up to the province to fund the sector appropriately, she added, noting it\u2019s not right to favour stockholders over care. If not, it\u2019s only going to get worse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe wages aren\u2019t competitive,\u201d Jefford said. \u201cWe\u2019ve had PSWs bid into housekeeping because the wages are comparable. There\u2019s going to be a mass exodus.
