{"id":9964,"date":"2020-04-02T13:38:38","date_gmt":"2020-04-02T17:38:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/?p=9964"},"modified":"2020-04-28T19:13:06","modified_gmt":"2020-04-28T23:13:06","slug":"consider-bringing-loved-ones-home-during-covid-19-pandemic-advocacy-group-suggests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ontariohealthcoalition.ca\/index.php\/consider-bringing-loved-ones-home-during-covid-19-pandemic-advocacy-group-suggests\/","title":{"rendered":"Consider bringing loved ones home during COVID-19 pandemic, advocacy group suggests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(April 1, 2020)<\/p>\n<p>By: Ted Raymond, CTV News Ottawa<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-right: 150px;\"><iframe style=\"display: block; height: 360px; width: 620px; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/webapps.9c9media.com\/vidi-player\/1.8.9\/share\/iframe.html?currentId=1931964&amp;config=ctvnews\/share.json&amp;kruxId=ImoeZsch&amp;rsid=&amp;siteName=CTVNews&amp;cid=%5B%7B%22contentId%22%3A1931964%2C%22ad%22%3A%7B%22adsite%22%3A%22ctv.ctvnews%22%2C%22adzone%22%3A%22embed%22%7D%7D%5D\" width=\"100%\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><span style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><span style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><span style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\"><span style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span>\ufeff<\/span><strong><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span>Analysis<\/strong><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Long-term care homes and retirement residences are becoming major points of concern for public health officials as COVID-19 continues to spread.<\/p>\n<p>Several deaths linked to the virus have occurred at long-term care facilities, including Canada&#8217;s first confirmed COVID-19 related death in B.C., as well as a major outbreak in Bobcaygeon, Ontario, where more than a dozen residents have died.<\/p>\n<p>Two residents of an Ottawa retirement home have died of COVID-19 complications.<\/p>\n<p>There have also been concerns about the supply of personal protective equipment in long-term care homes. <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/health\/coronavirus\/whistleblower-says-workers-at-nursing-homes-aren-t-being-given-protective-gear-1.4877005\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A whistleblower told CTV News<\/a><\/span> some managers are stockpiling and saving gear instead of giving it out to personal support workers and other staff.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on CTV Morning Live, Nathalie Mehra, Executive Director of the Ontario Health Coalition, says families might want to consider removing family members from care homes if they can.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If there was a way that people can safely take care of their loved one, I would be considering it,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Some people, there&#8217;s just no way; their care needs are too high.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Ontario Health Coalition is an advocacy group\u00a0that advocates for strengthening public health care and is opposed to privatization.<\/p>\n<p>Mehra is calling on the Ontario government to improve services at long-term care homes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need the government to step up and help recruit staff immediately,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It should have started a long time ago but, getting real, we all knew outbreaks were going to happen in the homes. It needs to start now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>THERE ARE DIFFERENT RISKS AT HOME: ETCHES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Speaking on Newstalk 580 CFRA&#8217;s &#8220;The Morning Rush with Bill Carroll&#8221;, Ottawa&#8217;s medical officer of health, Dr. Vera Etches, said bringing a relative home carries its own share of risks.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The thing about taking someone out of a long-term care home right now is that if they want to return to the long-term care home, that may not always be possible,&#8221; Dr. Etches said. &#8220;If someone takes somebody home from a long-term care home that has an outbreak, they&#8217;re definitely not allowed to be readmitted.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Etches added those relatives would need to be self-isolated in the home, and family members would have to take precautions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Also, family members may be going out into the community and bringing the infection back into the home as well,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Etches said all residents and staff at long-term care homes are being screened for COVID-19 symptoms every day and anyone coming in from outside the home must wear a mask while inside.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Homes can be harder for physical distancing but they&#8217;re being asked to implement that as much as they can now,&#8221; she said. &#8220;People recognize this is the most vulnerable population that we need to do everything to protect.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ottawa.ctvnews.ca\/consider-bringing-loved-ones-home-during-covid-19-pandemic-advocacy-group-suggests-1.4877428?cache=%3FclipId%3D89619\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Click here for original article<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(April 1, 2020) By: Ted Raymond, CTV News Ottawa \ufeff\ufeff\ufeff\ufeff\ufeff\ufeffAnalysis Long-term care homes and retirement residences are becoming major points of concern for public health officials as COVID-19 continues to spread.
