About 150 healthcare advocates will be waving signs and holding a news conference at the Kitchener GO train station, Thursday morning, before they head to a huge rally at Queen’s Park.
Jim Stewart is the chair of the Waterloo Region Health Coalition, and he told 570 NewsRadio its more than just a convenient way to get that many people to Toronto.
He said the name of Thursday’s rally is “Stop Ford’s Privatization Train Wreck!” and protesters will be coming by train from all over Ontario.
Stewart says all the local people will be carrying their signs on the GO platform, and they’ll stage a brief news conference before they get on board for Toronto at 8:36 a.m.
Another group is boarding the GO train in Guelph at 8:55 a.m.
Stewart said, “It’d be a busy time of the morning, and we’re all going to sort of ‘get on board’ and go and try to stop this train wreck.”
He highlighted the emergence of private clinics in gynecology, diagnostic imaging, and hip and knee surgery.
He said, “We’ve already seen what’s happening to health care in the USA — I mean, it’s absolutely a gong show. And quite frankly, the Americans can’t stand their own healthcare system, and why would we replicate that here?”
When all the trainloads of protesters have arrived, they’ll start marching from Union Station around 11:30 a.m., and begin the rally on the south lawn of the Ontario legislature building at 1:45 p.m.
Organizers expect anywhere from 5,000 to 10,000 protesters in total.
