Members of the public are being invited to attend a rally to save healthcare in front of Owen Sound city hall.

The Grey Bruce Health Coalition will be holding the peaceful rally at city hall at the corner of 2nd Avenue East and 8th Street East from 9 a.m. until noon in an effort to send a message of concern to the provincial government about the current state of the healthcare portfolio in the province.

The event will include speakers sharing stories about the challenges facing people who are losing access to public health care as successive government decisions favour the privatization of the sector, it said in a news release.

“Small and rural hospitals in our area are under threat of service reductions and possible closure as health services are centralized and moved into larger urban centres, creating anxiety and stress for those who require these services,” the release said. “Long term care is another community sector that is feeling the pressure of problems related to privatization and its accompanying problems.”

The Grey Bruce Health Coalition is a grassroots organization that formed more than a year ago to advocate for the protection and improvement of public healthcare. The local group works with the Ontario Health Coalition, advocating against the privatization of healthcare and raising concerns about service cuts at local hospitals.

Those attending Saturday’s rally will be able to write letters of concern to their MPPs on site, and there will be an opportunity to sign up for a bus to another rally at Queen’s Park in Toronto on May 30.
